Police Censors Pro-democracy Clothing Store's Decor, Citing #NationalSecurityLaw as Reason
In December 2020, several pro-democracy 'yellow' stores have been targeted by the Hong Kong police, and some store managers have even been prosecuted.
An environmental-friendly clothing store in Tai O named “EARTH.er” posted on Facebook on Dec 15 recounting that the police officers went to their store that afternoon.
The police claimed there was a complaint about their door slogan that read “Revolution is Not Guilty, Liberation is Justified”. The officers demanded the store to consider changing it.
The store manager repeatedly asked the police for more information of the complaint and how it is illegal. However, the officers asked the shop to check the National Security Law on their own, claiming that "it is written very clearly in the law".
The Police Public Relations Division replied to Stand News' inquiry, stating that no criminal liability is involved in the case so far, after their preliminary investigation.
The store owner said that the phrase was adapted from a quote by former CCP chairman Mao Zedong; yet it still “provoked” the police force to come to their store for an investigation. The store describes the incident as an example of “White Terror” .
