Compulsory romance lessons among proposals at China's political conference

New China’s social policies proposed in an important political conference, Chinese people’s political consultative conference (CPPCC) are introducing “Romance and marriage lessons” in schools, using the social credit system to penalise people who abandon their pet, ending compulsory English lessons.

China’s government is facing a crisis of an ageing population, declining birth and marriage rates and rising divorce rates, which it is aiming to address with population targets and a raised retirement age. Compulsory lessons in colleges has been proposed to strengthen “emotional education” in relationships.

CPPCC delegate Yu Xinwei proposed to remove compulsory English lessons and student could have more time dedicated for subjects including Chinese and mathematics. Xu argued English lessons were “only useful for the minority” given improvements in translation devices.

In February, there were rumours of waves of resignation in the government. The majority of those resigned were professionals such as health care workers in the Department of Health, social workers in the Social Welfare Department and engineers in the Housing Department.

In an interview with the media, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Nip Tak-kuen, revealed that about 200 people had not signed the statement of allegiance and the exact number would be reported to the Legislative Council later.
