Wuhan Pneumonia is a man-made disaster: Confessions from a Wuhaner living in Hong Kong

(28 Feb) Joyce was born in Wuhan. At 19, she came to Hong Kong to further her studies. She met her now-husband and decided to establish herself here, working in the arts. A decade went by quickly, with a few visits back home every year. Unlike most mainlanders, she grew up watching Hong Kong dramas to become proficient in Cantonese. She spoke with ease during her interview and said with a smile, "I like speaking vernacularly."

//Maintenance of social stability above all else

//The aim was to put political propaganda first, not to improve people's livelihood

//Even Wuhan's government would not do this... Hong Kong government is sacrificing Hong Kong

Hong Kong has been a wrestling arena for China and Britain for more than a century. It is, more accurately, a battleground between the #authoritarian and the #democratic world.

In 2019, the HK government insisted on passing a controversial extradition amendment bill, causing thousands of young people assembled to thwart it, and leading to marches which at the peak gathered 2 million citizens. Over these 10 months, riot police has fired over 10 thousand canisters of tear gas, conducted forced entries into university campuses, and used disproportionate armed force to disperse protesters.

An unidentifiable number of missing #Hongkongers , many of whom were still in their teens, tragically ended up as corpses on the sea, while the police considered the deaths unsuspicious.

Both the HK government and the Chinese central government have never ceased eroding Hongkongers' liberty. The HK government is planning to implement the notorious "Article 23 (of the Basic Law)" which empowers the same to enact laws to arrest anyone on the grounds of treason, secession, sedition, or subversion against the Chinese government.

By witnessing what has happened to numerous human rights activists in Mainland China, no one in Hong Kong should feel safe. What can we do to protect Hong Kong people from the autocracy?

Belarus protesters WaveLiberate Hong Kong” Flag and Chant “Free Hong Kong” Slogan

In Belarus, protesters waved the Hong Kong protest flag which reads “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” and chanted slogans like “Free Hong Kong”.

One of the protesters said she took part in one of the pro-democracy rallies in Hong Kong during the Anti-Extraditional Law Movement in 2019. It was when she kept the flag.

She brought the flag to the rally in Belarus in a hope to find resonance among these two places, both suffering from #authoritarian oppression.

#Free #JimmyLai" – Campaign for world attention on Hong Kong #HumanRights and Press Freedom

On Chinese New Year’s eve (Jan 31), a series of transatlantic illuminations aiming to draw international attention on China's #authoritarian rule over Hong Kong were seen on the walls of Tower Bridge in London and Chinese Embassy in Washington DC.

Bright white lights reading "Free Jimmy Lai and the Apple 7" of three storey tall were projected onto the walls.

In addition, the illuminations also showed the "Olympics rings in thorns", a portrait of Jimmy Lai and a yellow umbrella, the symbol of the 2014 Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong.

The US-based designer, Robin Bell said his intention was to grab people's attention on Human Rights around the world.

Mark L. Clifford, president of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong, shared photographs of the illuminations on his Twitter page, calling the upcoming #WinterOlympics in #Beijing " the most shameful Olympics since the 1936 Nazi Olympics in Berlin”.
