U.S. in talks with Huawei CFO Meng on resolving criminal charges
U.S. prosecutors are discussing a deal with Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzho to resolve criminal charges against her and signaling a potential end to a case that has strained ties between the Unit states, China and Canada. Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018 on bank fraud charges for allegedly āmisleading HSBC Holdings Plc about Huawei Technologies Co Ltdās business dealings in Iran, which was subject to U.S. sanctions.ā
According to the Reuters report, āChinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular briefing that Meng was innocent, and that the U.S. had āchoreographedā the case to contain Chinese high-tech companies.ā However, Huaweiās business dealings have been consistently sanctioned by the Trump administration and banned by other governments who believe its 5G network equipment could be used for spying purposes.
The results of her court hearing could possibly resolve part of the US-Canada-China dispute, during which after Mengās arrest, China stopped importing Canadian canola seeds and detained two Canadian citizens.
