#NBC Vindicates Wuhan Lab, China Aid Co-funder Suspects Reasons for Granted Access

NBC reported from Wuhan on Monday the latest updates on the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where many speculated was the origin of the coronavirus. The news agency emphasized that it was the very first foreign news agency to be granted access to the institute since the outbreak of the epidemic. The report quoted Wang Yanyi, Director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as saying that the institute was unfortunately targeted as a scapegoat for the origin of the virus.

Bob Fu, Co-founder of #ChinaAid in the US, questioned why NBC was granted access and pointed out that #MSNBC has not published other Chinese or Hong Kong news on the same day, including the arrest of prominent activists under the national security law and the police raid at Apple Daily’s headquarter.

Bob Fu’s Facebook page shows photos of him taken with Agnes Chow, who was arrested for alleged offences under the national security law, and Nathan Law, who is in exile in the UK, as well as photos of the arrest of Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital. Fu stated that the high profile arrest of pro-democracy leaders like Martin Lee, Chow, Lai, Lai’s two sons and four other Next Digital executives under the national security law signalled the death of Hong Kong’s freedom of press and rule of law.

Broadcasters urged to cancel plans to cover #Beijing #WinterOlympics

//Some of the world’s largest broadcasters including American network #NBC are being asked by human rights groups to cancel plans to cover next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Games are scheduled to open on Feb. 4, 2022.

The request comes in an open letter from rights groups representing minorities in China, including #Uyghurs, #Tibetans, #HongKong residents and others.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, was sent Tuesday to NBC Universal chief executive officer Jeff Shell and other international broadcast executives. NBC is paying $7.75 billion for the rights to the next six Olympics and works closely as a partner with the Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee.

Those payments are estimated to account for up to 40% of the IOC’s total income. The letter says the broadcasters risk “being complicit” in the “worsening human rights abuses” in China.
The letter comes just days after the delayed Summer Olympics and Paralympics wrapped up in Tokyo, putting the focus on the IOC and its choice of Beijing.//
