Feature Story: The doomsday of the news department as witnessed by five i-Cable journalists

A large crowd gathered outside Cable TV Tower at Hoi Shing Road, Tsuen Wan, a rare scene. All pointing their cameras at the bright red Cable TV logo, a line of photo journalists would charge forward and press the shutters whenever there was any hint of activity inside.

Among the photos, there is one showing news reader Kenix Lau Tsz-Fung leaving with a suitcase which carried her outfits on cast. Sports journalist Chan Hon-Wai held a basketball to his chest. Veteran journalist Alex Sin Ching-Fung carried a carton with a sticker “3 HK” which became a talking point of the netizens.

Journalists are the Public

When the world becomes too ridiculous, some boundaries that used to be black and white turn grey.

The journalists who report on court cases update the “menu” every night and list out cases for the next day in different courts scattered in whole Hong Kong. “East district”, “Sha Tin”, “Kwun Tong” are the names of different courts together with the details of the cases and the starting time of each trial.

Taiwan seizes chance to host foreign reporters kicked out of China

Taiwan is courting journalists fleeing China, spotting an opportunity to boost its visibility and build international support as concerns mount that Beijing is flirting with the idea of invading the country.

Last year, more than 20 journalists made the journey across the Taiwan Strait from China. Many had published articles critical of human rights abuses against the Uyghur Muslim minority in Xinjiang and the government’s early handling of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan.

The Observer view on China’s human rights abuses in Hong Kong

China did not wait long to demonstrate its contempt for last weekend’s criticism by G7 countries of human rights abuses in Hong Kong. By ordering the arrest of the editor-in-chief and four senior executives of the Apple Daily newspaper for allegedly conspiring with “foreign forces”, Xi Jinping and the Communist party sent a crude message of defiance to the west.

That China’s president and his Beijing apparatchiks were responsible for this provocatively timed injustice is not in serious doubt. Hong Kong’s 2019-20 pro-democracy protests, which Apple Daily supported, shook the CCP’s power monopoly and amour propre in ways not seen since Tiananmen Square. It has been punishing the ex-British colony ever since.
