Wuhan Pneumonia: Closing the border of city for hiding the truth of epidemic? Scholars claimed: Face recognition and Social Credit system disappeared

Wuhan Pneumonia epidemic is spreading, and the number of confrmed cases is skyrocketing, out of Chinese government’s control and expectation. The Chinese government is suspected for concealing the real situation of the epidemic and even closes the borders of several cities. In view of this, I-Chung Lai, the president of Cross-Strait Interflow Prospect Foundation, posted on his Facebook, ‘For the time being, the most powerful face recognition and social credit system launched by China disappeared suddenly.’

Lai pointed out, the Chinese government set up face recognition and social credit system for the sake of public safety”, and thus they should be suitable for dealing with public health crisis like Wuhan Pneumonia at the moment. He continued, ‘The systems can be used for tracing the contact history of patients, and setting up a better protection barrier,’ he continued to ask, ‘Why the system vanished when there is desperate need for them?’

Outraged and disappointed, Lai condemned that the Chinese government repeated the history of the Black Death epidemic in the Middle Age. He said, ‘Some unwise Taiwanese still appreciating what have done by the Communist officials, and think that everything will be fine under SOP (Standard Operation Procedure).’

Finally, Lai revealed, that the “Face recognition and Social Credit system” can be used down to the level of individuals, and the work of combating with disease as precise as a doctor using his scalpel in the course of surgery. He continued that, the Chinese government built up the system for social surveillance, and combating with public health crisis is surely the most reasonable case for applying that. ‘But now the Communist government abandoned that. What is the Chinese government hiding?'

Chinese State-Owned Surveillance Company #Dahua is Targeting #Uyghurs

Netizens discovered a source code package from China's Dahua Technology, one of China's largest makers of surveillance equipment, which shows that the company has made provisions to specifically identify Uyghurs with their cameras.

The state-owned enterprise has already been under US sanctions for its links to China's human rights abuses of Uyghurs in its Xinjiang province, and this discovery indicates that the company's technology is actively targeting the minority group, despite their previous denials.

Part of the discovered package, known as a software development kit (#SDK), includes descriptions of the results from Dahua's face recognition software. These descriptions include a field for ethnicity types; however, it only differentiates between Uyghur and non-Uyghur ("other").

Curiously, although ethnic Han Chinese comprises over 90% of China's population, the software makes no mention of the group, nor any other of the 56 ethnicities officially recognized by the ChinesecCommunist Party government.

Other details of the facial descriptions are also disturbing:

Aside from describing obvious characteristics (male/female, mask/no mask, etc), there is a field for "attractiveness", a score ranging from 1 to 100. "The higher the score, the more attractive the person," reads the comment attached to the field.

Another section of the SDK shows that these descriptions can be tied to the person's name, birthdate, home address, and even their emotions displayed on their face: smile, anger, disgust, and so on. There is even an emotion value for "screaming".

The fact that their surveillance software is so specifically designed to target Uyghurs - and no other ethnic group - strongly suggests that Dahua is making a conscious effort to support the Chinese Communist Party regime's suppression of the minority group.

Coupled with extensive profiling capabilities that the code hints at, one cannot ignore what Orwellian horrors this technology might enable China to implement - if it hasn't already done so in Xinjiang.

The Dahua SDK can be found on Github:

The source code indicative question is in the file/com/dahua/lib/NetSDKLib.java
