Poverty Alleviation in China: 99% Poverty Alleviation Rate in Jiangsu China

(Editor's Note: the average wage income in impoverished rural village per capita in 2018 was 3,627 Yuan and the standard of absolute poverty is set at 4000 Yuan. The poverty rate is controlled by government subsidiary allowance. )

The Beijing News reported that the state of Jiangsu province released a "Poverty Alleviation Program Progress Report". In the report, the poverty alleviation rate reached a remarkable 99% in Jiangsu Province. Only 6 households and 17 people are still living in poverty currently. This “outstanding” achievement became a hot topic on internet discussion shortly.

In regards to the accuracy of data, Jiangsu government told the Beijing News that “after a week, the data may be changed possibly. Those left from poverty may fall back into poverty again. The result can be up and down; however, the change is little. 99.99% poverty alleviation rate in the report is confirmed.”

Many people on the internet questioned why the Jiangsu poverty standard is 6000 RMB on average and is higher than other provinces. They also asked why the State does not provide 6000 RMB subsidy for the 17 people that are still in poverty so it can achieve 100% poverty alleviation rate. The State Department disagrees the subsidies idea. “We have budget for poverty alleviation. However, we disagree to help each household leaving poverty by providing subsidy. We could possibly achieve 100% poverty alleviation with the standard of 6000RMB immediately with subsidies. However, it’s not vitality if subsidies are given like “free lunch”. They might have money this year, but they can go back to poverty next year.”

Poverty Alleviation in China : Solving Poverty by Cutting Subsidy

In 2015, Chairman Xi Jinping launched the poverty alleviation policy for the 70 million impoverished households and promised to make China ‘moderately prosperous’ by 2020. As the deadline draws closer, local authorities across the country began actively removing signs of poverty accordingly to create an illusion of success, which drove many impoverished families into even more extreme hardships.

A disabled man, who was also the sole breadwinner at home, was told by village officials that his subsistence allowance would be cancelled because his family had been ‘lifted out of poverty’.

In Shandong, a woman supporting her ill husband and the family on her meagre income was told to overstate the family income to falsify records as evidence under the threat of allowance cancellation. 2019 has already witnessed many cases of forced relocation in poverty-stricken villages.

In Jiangxi, officials ordered several old people to relocate from their houses in simple constructions, which were considered ‘a stain on the good results of poverty alleviation’.

In November, a 72-year-old man in Henan hanged himself out of desperation after the government forcibly demolished his house. In the name of poverty alleviation, many people were driven to the ‘dead-end’. This man cried before taking his own life.

Chinese student Wu Huayan dies after living on pennies a day

(Editor's Note : from the latest report of Now News, it discovered that, the 9958 Rescue Centre, a project of the China Charities Aid Foundation for Children (CCAFC), raised 1 million Yuan in her name but only transferred 20,000 Yuan to her. What a shame.)

A severely malnourished student who survived on just 2 yuan ($0.30) per day for years to support her brother has died, at the age of 24. She was only 20kg in weight and 135cm in height.

Her story was reported by media in Oct 2019 and donations flooded in; unfortunately, she passed away on 14Jan. People question whether the government subsidy between 300 and 700 yuan a month was sufficient.

China has previously pledged to "eliminate" poverty by 2020. Earlier this month, Jiangsu province said only 17 people out of its more than 80 million population were living in poverty. The figures were questioned online.

At least six dead after huge sinkhole in China swallows bus and pedestrians

An enormous sinkhole occurred in Xinging, the capital of Qinghai province at 17:30 13th January. The incident also triggered an explosion. Six people were found dead, 10 were missing and 16 were taken to the hospital.

According to the state-run CCTV broadcaster, a bus and some pedestrians were engulfed by the hole. Rescue work and investigation was underway.

Sinkholes are not uncommon in China. In 2013 and 2016, sinkholes opened up in Shenzhen and Central Henan province, killing five and swallowing three people respectively.

Zhuhai Emergency Management Bureau announced the explosion in the Changlian Petrochemical Plant in Gaolangang

The local authority claimed no one was killed or hurt in the accident. An investigation has been launched. Bureau stressed the explosion had not caused changes in any environmental readings.

Videos circulating on social media showed the factory was swallowed by a huge fire as plumes of black smoke billowing into the air and workers escaping from the fire-ravaged plant.

Industrial accidents are common in China, where safety regulations are often poorly enforced. Last year, the explosions of a chemical plant in Eastern Jiangsu province in March and a gas plant in central China in July killed 78 people and 15 people respectively.

Among the worst accidents in China, there was a massive explosion in 2015 at a chemical warehouse in Tianjin port that killed 173 people, most of them were firefighters and police officers. That blast was blamed on illegal construction and unsafe storage of volatile materials.

Next to Wuhan Pneumonia, China's Hunan Province Reports H5N1 Bird Flu Outbreak : 300 Million Chickens at ‘Edge of Death’ on Hubei Lockdown

Halting transport in and out of Hubei has “basically paralyzed” shipments of animal feed supplies and the raw materials.

Hubei consumes about 1,800 tons of corn and 1,200 tons of soymeal a day as animal feed, and may see a 600,000-ton deficit of these products by the end of next month.

The China Animal Agriculture Association called on the country’s feed makers to supply 18,000 tons of corn and 12,000 tons of soymeal to Hubei immediately.

Jerry-built construction: Video shows interior of new Wuhan hospital badly leaking water

(Editor's Note: If the leakage is real, it would be devastating for those staying inside as #Wuhan will be snowing tomorrow. It will lead to more leakage and a drastic drop of temperature inside. The delivery of resources will become more difficult.)

Communist China claimed to have completed the city's Huoshenshan Hospital, built to care for 1,000 of the city's residents infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The rapid construction of the hospital was widely trumpeted by Chinese state-run mouthpieces.

However, on Saturday (Feb. 15), the dissident group Inty-media uploaded a video on Telegram and Twitter submitted by a Chinese user, allegedly taken from inside the vaunted #Huoshenshan Hospital. In the video, a large puddle of water can be seen in the hallway, with water dripping from the ceiling. Almost comically, just one yellow bucket can be seen capturing the steady indoor downpour, while little thought seems to be given to live electrical wires.
