Authorities Launch #MassArrest in Hong Kong to Silence Pro-democracy Dissents

In Hong Kong, nearly 1,000 police officers were deployed on the morning of Wednesday, Jan 6, 2021, to carry out mass arrests, sweeping multiple locations in the city.

53 pro-democracy activists, aged between 23 and 64, were arrested under the National Security Law and charged with either planning and organizing or participating in the primary election in September 2020.

Secretary for Security John Lee said in a press conference that those arrested were "suspected of subversion", which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Amnesty International stated the arrests were "the starkest demonstration yet of how the national security law has been weaponized to punish anyone who dares to challenge the establishment".

The Hong Kong police also searched 72 places with court warrants and served court paper on three media outlets: Apple Daily, Stand News, and Inmedia HK, demanding them to hand over documents to assist with national security investigation.

It was also reported that the police froze a fund amounted HK$1.6 million suspected of relating to the case.

What happened in Hong Kong on January 6, 2021?

Early in the morning, the Hong Kong police began a sweeping crackdown on Hong Kong's opposition figures. The arrests formed part of the largest crackdown since China’s imposition of National Security Law.

• About 1,000 national security officers were deployed

• 53 people were arrested - including three members of the Civic Party, seven members of the Democratic Party, 21 pro-democracy district councillors, 13 candidates from the primaries, two scholars Benny Tai and Chung Ting-yiu, and one US citizen and human rights lawyer from the raided law firm.

• Three news outlets were asked to hand over information: Apple Daily and Stand News had co-organised election forums for the primaries candidates, while In-Media ran ads around the primaries

• Police searched the home of already detained activist Joshua Wong

• Police searched the offices of law firm Ho Tse Wai & Partners

#Taiwan: Fear and oppression turn Hong Kong from the "Pearl of the Orient" into a shocking "Hell of the Orient"

More than 50 pro-democracy politicians, campaigners and scholars have been arrested across Hong Kong in an unprecedented crackdown on Wednesday morning of January 6, 2021.

The mass arrests were the largest move against Hong Kong’s democracy movement since the National Security Law was imposed by Beijing last year.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said, "We and the international community are equally shocked by the early morning raids in Hong Kong and the arbitrary arrests of Hong Kong democrats, and condemn any tyrannical acts that oppress democracy and human rights,".

"The 'Hong Kong version of the National Security Law' has frequently struck democrats on charges of subverting state power. It not only highlights the fact that the Hong Kong Basic Law meant to protect the rights of Hong Kong people's has become nothing but words, but its evil deeds have also turned Hong Kong from the 'Pearl of the Orient' into a shocking 'Hell of the Orient'."

Top Judge in Hong Kong Defends Hong Kong’s Independent Judiciary in Farewell Speech

Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma, Hong Kong's top judge for 10 years, delivered his farewell speech at the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong on Jan 6, 2021.

Ma made strong statement in defense of the importance of Hong Kong’s independent judiciary and stressed that human rights are a fundamental feature of the Basic Law.

“It is not just about being conducive to business and investment. Nor is it only about law and order. It also includes the recognition and enforcement of those rights we call human rights and fundamental freedoms (such as the freedom of assembly, of procession, of association and the freedom of the press), always of course recognising as well the importance of the respect for the rights and entitlements of others in the community.”

“The importance we place on rights and freedoms is a fundamental feature of of the Basic Law."

“So whenever there are discussions about the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the role and responsibilities of judges in relation to these fundamental features, the foundation for such discussions must be to refer to the Basic Law,” the top judge said.

“They are not in any way strange concepts that have been transplanted randomly to apply in Hong Kong: they are concepts required by, protected by and to be enforced under the very constitutional document that governs Hong Kong.”

“To repeat a phrase that bears reminding at all times: no one is above the law, all are subject to it and everyone is equal in the eyes of the law.”

"As we know, such criticisms can be trenchant, even to the point of being abusive on occasion, but in spite of this our judges have remained true to their calling. Sometimes, I think that courage is needed.”

[Editor's note: On the same day, the Hong Kong police, with the support of the government's Security Bureau, arrested over 50 pro-democracy activists, former lawmakers, lawyer, and scholars under the National Security Law. The act has stirred up outcry and uproar within the outside of the city.]

A US citizen, Clancey could potentially be the first foreign citizen who does not also hold a Hong Kong passport to be arrested under the national security law.

The US Consulate in Hong Kong would not comment on the arrests. Clancey's detention could pose a major diplomatic issue for Washington, amid an already tense relationship with China.//
