Attacker Spreads Manure at Pro-democracy, Pro-Hong Kong Restaurant in #Taiwan

A masked assailant dashed into a restaurant in Taiwan's capital Taipei on Oct 16, 2020 and spattered chicken manure over kitchen equipment and the staff.

The restaurant announced on Facebook that it will close for 1 week for necessary cleaning work.

The restaurant #Aegis was launched in 2020. It offers assistance to young people from Hong Kong who have been relocated to Taiwan after participating in last year’s pro-democracy protests.

Taipei’s city government condemned the attack and ordered the police to use “full resources” in hunting down the assailant.

A suspect was swiftly arrested in less than 12 hours. 3 more suspects masterminding behind the scene were also arrested on Oct 17, 2020.

Chinese Man Pays Vandals to Attack Pro-Hong Kong Restaurant in Taiwan

On October 16, 2020, Aegis, a restaurant in Taiwan which has been providing work for pro-democracy Hongkongers in exile, was vandalized by four men with feces.

The suspects were arrested the following day by the Taiwanese police. The four men admitted they were paid 15,000TWD to carry out the vandalization.

Taiwanese authorities are tracking down a mainland Chinese man who instigated the four to carry out the attack.

According to Taiwan news outlets, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office has closed their investigation on the case in October 2020. The suspects were charged for public insult, and causing harms and damages.

The police pointed out that a man surnamed Chen funded the vandalization, and is currently in China. They are still investigating the identity of the man behind the scene and his motive.

Pro-democracy lawyer and 10 more arrested by HK National Security Officer, suspected of assisting 12 Hongkongers fleeing for Taiwan

This morning (January 14), another pro-democracy lawyer and founder of Aegis, a diner in Taipei, Daniel Wong Kwok-tung was arrested and taken away from his home by National Security police officers. Sources revealed that Wong and other 10 civilians, aged 18 to 42 were arrested for assisting the 12 youth fleeing Hong Kong for Taiwan last August.

Hong Kong police has not provided reasons of the arrest.

At around 6am, Daniel Wong, currently a district councilor of Kowloon City, wrote on his facebook that “the National Security Police will arrive at my home at around 6:10. Don’t know which police station I will be taken to. More details to come.”

Wong is known for his persistent in providing legal assistance to anti-ELAB protesters. He also founded #Aegis, a restaurant in Taiwan which employs Hong Kong residents seeking shelter in Taiwan.

Another vocal social activist, Willis Ho, former vice secretary general of Hong Kong Federation of Students, also wrote on her Facebook this morning, stating that her mother has been arrested and being taken to Tsuen Wan Police Station for investigation.

On January 6, Hong Kong Police deployed more than 1,000 officers and arrested more than 50 civilians in one day, including former legislators, district councilors and political activists involved in LegCo primaries last year. They were suspected of violating the National Security Law, although most of them were released on bail on the next day.
