Pro-Beijing Abraham Shek criticises the government: "Lacking in talent and lacking in tolerance"

Abraham Shek: I never supported the Bill

The Extradition Bill triggered a series of crisis which is still ongoing. As part of the pro-Beijing camp, Abraham Shek pointed out that he never supported the Bill. He compared the spirit of rule of law to a holy flame, a constant reminder that the law system in Hong Kong is different to that of in mainland China. If implemented, the proposed Extradition Bill will integrate the common law system in Hong Kong with the socialist legal system of mainland China, which will extinguish the rule of law's flame. He criticised Carrie Lam for being the main person who desires for this flame to be extinguished.

HK Government: Civil servants should be loyal to the Chief Executive

A civil servant union questioned the Hong Kong SAR Government, as an employer, for not giving support to civil servants arrested in the pro-democracy movement.

In response, Secretary for the Civil Service Nip Tak-kuen issued a letter to all civil servants demanding their loyalty. Nip claimed that the basic responsibility of civil servants is to support the Basic Law and be loyal to the Hong Kong SAR and the Chief Executive, and they should not participate in any illegal activities.

The Federation of Civil Service Union chairman Leung Chau-ting said he was not surprised about the letter issued by the government. Leung stressed that civil servants had consensus that Nip was appointed to rectify the team, but the letter did not have a strong deterrent effect.

Concerning the government proposal of adding a vowing session before civil servants take office, the union chairman said that it is just a ceremony and would not change people’s thought.

The Hong Kong Senior Government Officers Association chairman Lee Fong-chung stated that the government and civil servants had the same understanding of remaining “politically neutral”, where civil servants should not talk about politics at work. Lee explained that the government merely wanted to remind its employees due to the recent increase of political conflicts.

Government Spends 10 mil on 2 Redundant Apps

The Hong Kong Government has recently pumped in a large sum of money into developing two cellphone apps.

It costs HKD5 million to develop each app, with 4 million dollars being subsidized by the government. The two apps were developed by the "North Point Neighbour Association” and a health prompting group.

There have been doubts about how useful these apps actually are. Some of the elderly felt that there was no need for an app to be developed to teach them how to exercise. Many of them claimed that they would rather watch and learn it on Youtube.

It has been discovered that these two apps were developed by the same company. Subject matter experts were interviewed about these apps, and they estimated the cost to develop these apps to be 50% of whatever the government spent. In total, 10 million Hong Kong dollars was spent in developing two redundant apps, when it could have cost half the price.
