Nepali journalist Balaram Baniya who reported on Chinese encroachment in Nepal village, found dead

//Balaram Baniya, the Nepali journalist who reportedly wrote an article on Chinese encroachment in Rui village, has been found dead. The 50-year-old journalist’s body was found at the banks of Bagmati River where he was last seen alive.

//According to Kathmandu Post, Baniya was associated with Kantipur Daily, a Nepali newspaper, since the paper’s initial days. He used to cover politics and parliament and later did extensive reporting on governance and bureaucracy.

//The journalist’s death comes amid the strained bilateral relations between #India and #Nepal.

China, Russia, Cuba and others elected to the UN Human Rights Council; China received 20% fewer votes than last time

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) re-elected some of its members. China, Russia, Pakistan and Cuba were elected, with China receiving 20% fewer votes than the 2016 election. Saudi Arabia was not elected.

The UNHRC is composed of 47 member states, with 15 seats re-elected from 5 regions for a three-year term starting January 2021. All regions except the Asia-Pacific region elected their members unopposed, examples being Russia and Cuba.

In the Asia-Pacific region, five nations competed for four spots, which were won by China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Nepal. China received 139 votes, 20% less than when it was elected in 2016. Pakistan gained 169 votes, Uzbekistan 169, Nepal 150. Saudi Arabia, which had 152 votes in 2016, lost with only 90 votes this time.
