Thai Police Shows Three-finger Salute to Civilians in Support of Freedom and Democracy

Pro-democracy protests in Thailand have entered the fifth day on October 18, 2020. Many scenes in Thailand recalled the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong: the supply chain formed by the gathering public; rallies that were initiated by the public and took place in different areas; the public which took turn to speak up for the leaderless movement; and the 'red sea' moment when protesters gave way to ambulances.

According to the report by The Matter (twitter@thematterco), the public rallying at Victory Monument in Bangkok chanted "Hong Kong is a country! Return independence to Hong Kong!". It was reported that on Oct 18, 2020, over 10,000 civilians protested in the area.

Moreover, AFP journalist Mladen Antov captured a Thai police showing the pro-democracy three-figure salute to the protesters. The photo has gone viral on the Internet. Many contrasted it with a photo of the Hong Kong police but showing the middle finger to the pro-democracy protesters during the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Movement in Hong Kong.

According to Thai Enquirer, a former police officer told the public he resigned as he did not want to cause harm to any civilian. He also reminded his former colleagues that the duty of the police is to serve the public.

In Chiang Mai, university students held rally and expressed that in case the students in Bangkok cannot hold out, they would continue the fight.

Netizens initiated rallies in over 20 locations including Pathumtani and Nonthabur outside of the capital.

Brutality of HK Police Makes its Way to Thailand

Carrying on to the 5th day in the row, the pro-democracy movement in Thailand has no sign of abate. Over the weekend, Bangkok, protesters continued to gather, flouting a new gathering restriction for no more than 5 persons, calling for Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to step down and the government to be re-organized.

In a press briefing on Oct 17, 2020, Thai Police clarified disinformation that has went viral on social media, including an image showing black-clad protesters being arrested by the police.

With hands tied to their back, the photo shows young protesters being forced to kneel on their knees facing a wall.

The Thai police made clear that the protest scene captured in the image was not in Thailand, but Hong Kong.

Who is the puppet? — Did he leave out the famous Tank Man on Tiananmen Square in 1989 in his photo collection on purpose?

Former district councilor Dominic Lee Tsz-king, who is known for his pro-Beijing stance, called pro-democracy protesters actors on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/leetszking/posts/5135204823171645).

In a collage of photos with protest scenes in Hong Kong, Thailand and Ukraine showing in common a peaceful protester standing in front of armed police, begging them to retreat and not to injure the innocent civilians, Lee wrote “No such thing as old way so long as it works,” scorning protesters as nothing but “mere actors performing theatrical acts”.

Lee is a member of the pro-Beijing People's Party in Hong Kong, which is chaired by Beijing loyalist and former Secretary for Security Regina Ip.

Australia asked China to Clarify whether the Instruction to Chinese Companies Not to buy Australian Coal is a Political Countermeasure

The Australian government on Tuesday (13 October) asked China to clarify whether it had instructed Chinese companies to stop buying Australian coal as a political countermeasure, jeopardizing a business involving about $10 billion (HK$78 billion) a year.

Australian Trade Minister, Simon Birmingham, said he had inquired China through diplomatic channels that whether it had instructed Chinese companies to stop buying Australian coal. “I am not hoping us to get lost in the speculation, but we are working with industries to take action and to have discussions with China," Birmingham said.

Many trade publications, including S&P Global Platts, reported that China's state-run energy suppliers and steel mills had received "verbal notice" from the government to stop buying Australian coal. Tensions between China and Australia have continued in recent months as a result of trade disputes and spy scandals. The economy in Australia has fallen into recession for the first time in nearly 30 years, and the ban from China on Australian coal will have a serious impact on its energy-dependent economy. Besides, the conservative government in Australia is also affected as it has vigorously promoted the coal industry to secure political support in key regions of the country.

The discord between China and Austalia has been escalating. Beijing threatened the exports on Australian wine and beef while Australia called for an investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak. Beijing also warned its citizens not to visit Australia or study aboard, alleging the anti-Asian racial discrimination in Australia during the pandemic.

Virologist Urged the International Community to Force the CCP Revealing the Truth in her Report

Li-Meng Yan, a former researcher at the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong and a Chinese virologist who had fled to the United States, and her research team have published a second report on COVID-19 on Thursday (Oct 8). The report pointed out that using template virus owned by a laboratory of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), virus like SARS-CoV-2, that lead to COVID-19, can be created within six months. The team also believed that the government used data fabrication to cover up the true origin of SARS-CoV-2, further implicates that the laboratory modification there is beyond simple gain-of-function research. It could be the result of “unrestricted bioweapon”, her team said.

The report stated that SARS-CoV-2 has two possible origins, either from natural evolution or laboratory. In the team's last report, it was found that the virus' genome has some unusual features. They suggested that it is a result of sophisticated laboratory modification rather than natural evolution. In this latest report, the team tried to justify further that SARS-CoV-2 is a laboratory modified virus with biological evidence.

Saudi Arabia fails to join UN human rights council but Russia and China elected

The only contested region of the UN human rights council in the 2020 elections was the Asia-Pacific, where China and Saudi Arabia were in a five-way race with Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Nepal for four seats.

Each nation state sitting on the council is charged with promoting and protecting human rights.

China stands accused of sending hundreds of thousands of Uighur Muslims into state re-education camps in Xinjiang province.

The UK shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, pressed the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, to publicly state that the UK would not be supporting China. He declined to do so as the normal practice of UK is not to reveal how they had voted.

#Germany grants a 3-year refugee status to pro-democracy student protester from Hong Kong

Germany has officially granted a 3-year refugee status for a 22-year-old Hong Kong pro-democracy protester on October 14, 2020.

While the person was the first protester of Hong Kong's anti-extradition law movement to receive asylum in Germany, the country had received two Hong Kong activists, Ray Wong Toi-Yeung and Alan Li Tung-Sing, of #HongKongIndigenous.

This student of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) who was charged with riotting, fled Hong Kong last November.

In Germany, she had faced many hardships during the asylum application process. She had lived in refugee camps for nearly 11 months. During the time, she was hospitalised due to emotional issues and sexually assaulted by a refugee camp staff.

She expressed her gratitude towards the German government and hoped that the authorities could "consider simplifying the asylum application process for Hong Kong protesters, such as allowing them to choose freely their place of residence while waiting for the decision". She believed this would bring "great convenience and support" to the pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

Hospital Authority Retaliates on Medical Workers Indiscriminately

Hong Kong Hospital Authority Employees' Association (#HAEA) initiated a 5-day strike in early 2020, calling on the Hong Kong Government to close all the borders to stop the spread of the Coronavirus from China to Hong Kong. Thousands of medical workers had joined the strike.

Since then, the Hospital Authority (#HA) had threatened its employees multiple times with regard to the strike. In February 2020, the authorities issued letters to medical workers and demanded an explanation on their "absence" during the days of the strike.

In the Radiology Department of Princess Margaret Hospital, several medical workers had joined the strike. The management demanded the department head Dr Ma Ka-fai to hand in a name list of the relevant employees. Dr Ma refused.

According to Stand News, the Human Resources Department recently sent an email to all doctors in the Radiology Department, claiming they had all joined the strike. Vice chair of the union HAEA Law Cheuk-yiu condemned the HR Department for pressuring the Radiology Department.

Police Commissioner barred from attending district council meeting as councilors intends to stop government propaganda

In past year, Police representatives attending District Council meetings were repeatedly decried for flouting the Councilors elected by local population. They were found for unreasonably opposing meeting agenda items and documents, and ditching meetings at their own will. When sitting through a meeting, they only act on their own sidestepping questions raised by councilors. When discontented, they even abandon the meeting to talked to media outside the meeting room.

In an attempt to set things right, Kowloon City District Council barred Police Commissioner, Chris Tang from attending their meetings. Kwong Po-yin, vice Chairperson of the Council explained in a radio programme on October 16, 2020 that the new plan was meant to stop the Commission from making use of the Councilors for propaganda and his lust for media exposure.

Kwong said, “knowing that he is coming to hurt you, why would we allow it to happen? He is, after all, a douche.” Kwong’s comment was supported and acclaimed by many.
