Apple closes Chinese App Store loophole, causing thousands of games to be removed

//Apple will start removing thousands of games from its Chinese App Store in July as a result of a policy that requires all paid games or games with in-app purchases to be licensed by Chinese regulators

// The action marks the end of a loophole that allowed developers to sell games on the platform while they were awaiting approval.

//The measures are expected to impact at least one-third of the reportedly 60,000 games currently listed on Apple’s Chinese App Store that are either paid or feature in-app purchases and which currently lack a license. For some game developers, that could mean losing all revenue from Apple’s second-largest app market.

//major Android app stores have enforced the requirement to have a license prior to publication in China since 2016. However, the situation with Android app stores in China is different to iOS since these are run by local players like Tencent, Oppo, and Huawei.

// Google does not offer its Google Play Store in China.

//The news of the removals comes in the same month that Apple removed a pair of podcasting apps from its Chinese App Store at the request of the Chinese government.

Hong Kong top analyst Law Ka-chung left China-based bank because "top of Beijing political circle" said so

(1 May) Law Ka-chung joined the Hong Kong branch of Bank of Communications (BOCOM) in 2005. Two years later, he got promoted as the Chief Economist and Strategist. He write freely and criticized the Hong Kong and China economic systems without any restriction for many years. He started feeling the pressure from China related to his work around 2010.

//"People think it is not appropriate to have a Hongkonger as spokesperson for a China-based bank."

//China-based banks adjusted policy and extended the scope to "purge" Hongkongers step by step. China-base banks don't hire local young people anymore.

//the main point was the system problem...It is about politics and the decision is from top to down (from Beijing)."

//China would like to connect the world via China-based banks... "China sent a lot of people to Hong Kong to learn how the external financial market worked."

//In 2010, he announced that BOCOM would stop comment or run analysis related to China affairs... the excuse BOCOM used was "China affair should come from the China headquarter."

//the decision of the Hong Kong branch "was not from the bank, but it was top-down from there Communist Party of China (CCP).”

//China GDP started to slow down from 10.5% in 2010 to 9,5% and 7.9% year by year. "In the beginning, China didn't think they would collapse because of your comments. However, when things get worse, they would like you to shut up," ...When the economy gets worse, the nature of CCP comes out.

//the Hong Kong financial market changed and put too much focus on China because capital from China soared rapidly.

//So-called financial institutes not only did their own business but also executed political mandate.

//"If you want to be an international financial centre, you can't focus on Asian markets only. You should cover the America and Europe markets as well."

//Hong Kong government and China-based banks focused solely on China market and often launched China related financial products.

//if China wants to internationalize RMB, financial institutes issues RMB bonds everywhere, and China-based banks has to promote that.

//"In the 1980s, when China wanted to take over Hong Kong, they planned to replace all the Hong Kong people with the mainland Chinese. It is just about time to push all of the Hongkongers out."

//BOCOM requested staff to attend marches against umbrella movement in 2014 and counted who attended.

//the impact of SARS in 2003 was much worse.

//Why did the analyst need to align with the Government?

//the demand during umbrella movement in 2014 was still about a general election. However, some voices in the anti-ELAB movement are related to Hong Kong independence and topple the regime in China... China doesn't care about the special status of Hong Kong and execute hard-line policy.

//Since China government can't brainwash the young generation, they turned against all Hongkongers.

//People worried the China will take over private wealth... Hong Kong enforce the law at random, and Hong Kong judicial was overridden, one country two systems is completely over."

//"Money will leave astonishing like leakage in water pipe. And it will never come back."

//speed up de-globalization, Asian countries replacing China as global factory, the agent of capital flow and investment foundation moving to Singapore and away from Hong Kong.

//"The financial centre is losing power. China market is declining. Our financial centre position will diminish."

Canadians interrogated in China are the “ bargaining chips” used by China for the latest hostage diplomacy deal to free Ms Meng Wanzhou

After the 18th month of their detention, two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, were accused of espionage by China. Kovrig, a former diplomat, and Spavor, a businessman, were arrested in 2018 shortly after Meng Wanzhou – an executive of China’s state controlled giant Huawei – was detained under US request. The two men have not been able to meet with their lawyer or their families since their arbitrary detention. Instead, they were allegedly exposed to interrogation for six to eight hours a day and exposed to 24-hour artificial lighting.

In comparison, Ms. Meng, according to herself, finally had time to read a book and carefully finish an oil painting. To make things worse, China’s state-controlled court system has an almost 100% conviction rate.

Meanwhile, China constantly implies the fate of the two Canadians are linked to the outcome of Meng’s case. A Chinese journalist even claimed that Canada failed to realize Meng was worth 10 – if not more – Kovrig & Spavor, further exposing the nature of this hostage diplomacy. Behind it is the Han chauvinism and ultranationalism cultivated by the Chinese Communist Party over the years.

The ideology is deeply rooted in imperial China’s world view in which it sees itself the centre of the world for the rest to #kowtow to, sees its renewal as China become increasingly convinced of its uprising power.

Feature for Personalising Apparel Disabled from NBA Official Online Store following Controversy on Restricting “FreeHongKong” as Text Option

NBA Spokesperson: There Were Attempts to Print Hateful Messages

Many NBA players have been showing their support for the recent movements against systemic racial discrimination in the US, and the National Basketball Players Association has reached an agreement with the NBA to allow slogans supporting racial equality to be printed on the back of jerseys.  However, it was discovered last Monday that the NBA official online store had restricted apparel customisations that included the text “FreeHongKong”.

The website then briefly reopened orders for personalised apparel with “FreeHongKong” and explained that there was a technical problem previously.  But four days later, the customisation feature was completely removed from the website.

An NBA spokesperson confirmed to Fox News that the apparel customisation feature was temporarily removed from the website since there were “attempts to include violent, abusive and hateful messages on personalised NBA jerseys”, yet no explanation was offered on the inappropriate language in question.  Republican Senator Josh Hawley accused the NBA of carrying out censorship like China and not daring to offend Beijing.

Fox News pointed out that before the “FreeHongKong” controversy, the personalised apparel feature had allowed customisations of all sorts of texts, even violent messages such as “Kill Cops”.

A Stand News reporter logged into the NBA website on Friday morning and found all personalised apparel had been taken off the shelf.  The only customisable item still available was the Los Angeles Lakers bear, but the text limit had been changed from 12 characters to 11, making it impossible to print the “FreeHongKong” slogan.  However, “FreeHK” was still a possible choice and the reporter was able to proceed smoothly to the shopping cart for payment.

Another official NBA online store operator, Fanatics, is also no longer offering personalised NBA apparel, but the website still offers personalised gear from NFL, MLB and other leagues.  Fans could still order apparel or gear with “FreeHongKong” text, but “Kill Cops” or other such hateful texts were not accepted.

Experts have opined that the incident has shown NBA’s double standards in allowing stance that pertains to equality movements in the US but hesitating to touch on topics sensitive to China.

“The Marvelous Snail”, are you playing games which censor your speech?

(24 Jul) Recently a new game “The Marvelous Snail” was launched on Taiwan region Google Play and App Store. As soon as it was announced, along with advertorials from internet figures and tremendous advertisements, the game has secured the top position in both online stores.

//Chat restriction is no new element in pro-Beijing games... How much can you compromise against freedom?

//how do you know there would not be a day the in self-censorship in game would censor words the CCP doesn’t want people to mention and display words like “suicide”, “making money” in Putonghua Romanization like Tiktok?

//Anyway, I can’t stand a game exercising censorships in a so-called Taiwan server like how it did in China. I have deleted it.

//a player in “劍俠情緣參” got chat restricted for 10 years for saying “Okay, China Wuhan Pneumonia”.

//Freedom of speech is something would gradually disappear if you don’t defend it.

Australian University Deleted a Tweet Quoting Human Rights Organisation’s Support for Hong Kong after Facing Backlash from Chinese Students

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia tweeted an article previously quoting a human rights organisation’s statement that the human rights situation in Hong Kong was rapidly deteriorating and called for international pressure on China. The post was deleted next day morning after an apparent backlash from Chinese students. A UNSW spokesperson explained deleting the tweet because the comment was ”being misconstrued as representative the university”.

On Friday, 31 July 2020, according to The Guardian’s report, the UNSW published an article on its website quoting Elaine Pearson, the Australian director of Human Rights Watch. Pearson said that she was approached by a member of the university’s media team to give her views on the present situation in Hong Kong and how the international community respond.

On the same day, UNSW’s official Twitter account quoted Pearson’s comment in the interview that now is a pivotal moment to pay attention to Hong Kong’s rapidly deteriorating situation, and that “‘now is the time’ for the international community to put pressure on China to wind back recent infringements on human rights in Hong Kong”.

The tweet drew strong dissent from UNSW Chinese students who demanded an apology from the university. They shared a post on WeChat calling for a boycott and unfollow the university’s official Twitter. Global Times, a Chinese state English newspaper, highly concerned on this incident and published a report to criticise that article as interference in Hong Kong affair. The report quoted a UNSW student from mainland China that he and other students were in talks with the university to demand an apology for the tweet.

Cyclist denies no-mask charge; questioned 「Is it illegal to say ‘NgaiZeon-er’”?

(9 Aug) “I was crying on my knees but they ignored me. Are the Hong Kong police so tyrannical that they could penalize me even when I was wearing a mask the whole time? What kind of society is that?” Last night marked the nineth month of the death of Chow Tsz Lok. A man in convenience-store uniform shouted " YiJin-er" to the police as he rode his bicycle through the Sheung Tak car park. He was then summoned by the police for violating the Cap. 599I "mask order". At one point, he was pleading on his knees. Apple Daily contacted the man in question, Mr. Hon, after the incident. He told the reporter what happened yesterday, during which he cried out in sorrow and criticized the police for being unreasonable.

Mr. Hon, who had a disgruntled look on his face, said he lives in Po Lam and works as a cleaner at a food court in Tseung Kwan O. Recently, he had a bicycle accident and hurt his back, so he had been staying home to recuperate. When he cycled past Sheung Tak car park last night, he saw many people mourning for Chow Tsz Lok in front of the altar. He also saw the police’s arrogance when driving away pedestrians, and he couldn’t refrain from shouting “NgaiZeon-ers” at them. A number of officers immediately approached him and asked for his ID. They charged him for violating the “mask order”, during which they brutally pulled his left hand. “They (the police) took out a notebook and said I wasn’t wearing a mask and wasn’t wearing it well. But I had my mask on the whole time.”

Mr. Hon was so shaken up that he immediately knelt down to plead for leniency, but the police remained unmoved and mocked him. “I was crying and pleading non-stop. I really don’t have any money. But the police only said, ‘Are you done acting yet?’. After that, he even asked me to apologize to him.” He reenacted the kneeling scene saying that he was wearing a mask at the time, though he did not rule out the possibility that the mask might have "fallen a little" when he speaks. He also kept kowtowing to the officers to apologize, but was still charged even though he did nothing against the law. After the incident, he went to Tseung Kwan O Hospital with pain in his left hand and swelling on his forehead from knocking his head on the ground.

Mr. Hon, who is chronically ill and has been receiving disability allowance for  years, said that he has financial difficulties and simply could not pay the $2,000 fine. “I wore a mask the whole time and I didn’t even break the law. Why do I have to pay this $2000 fine? I won’t be able to afford my daily expenses [after paying the fine]… Is it illegal to say the term ‘NgaiZeon-er’?”. Mr. Hon's eyes were red and he was in tears, saying that the police had abused their power by issuing the penalty, and he would not pay the fine.

China's CCTV said the NBA continued to Release Goodwill after the Suspension, Rebroadcasting from Tomorrow

NBA Team Houston Rockets Director Daryl Morey supported Hong Kong democracy on Twitter, causing dissatisfaction from China. At that time, CCTV announced that they would stop broadcasting events and “would investigate all cooperation and exchanges involving the NBA”. After a year, CCTV indicated today that they would rebroadcast NBA from tomorrow (10th October). The spokesperson stated that he noted NBA continued to show their goodwill, including “expressed holiday blessings to Chinese fans” on National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival and “Put active efforts in areas including supporting the Chinese people to fight COVID-19 pandemic”.

CCTV stated today (9th October), “Basketball has a broad mass base and viewing demand in China”. As a result, the CCTV Sports Channel would resume broadcasting the NBA competitions as “normal broadcast arrangement” on the morning of 10th October, Hong Kong time. The NBA 19/20 season has reached the finals, and it would be the fifth game by the time of rebroadcasting. For the time being, Los Angeles Lakers led the Miami Heat with 3:1 games, only one victory away from the championship.

The NBA team Houston Rockets Director Daryl Morey posted a “Stand with Hong Kong” photo on Twitter, indicating his support for Hong Kong democracy. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver showed his support for Morey to exercise freedom of speech. CCTV first announced the suspension on broadcasting the competitions of Houston Rockets, then issued a statement about the immediate ban for NBA preseason broadcasting and would investigate all NBA-related cooperation and exchanges.

Youtuber #UncleRoger deletes video co-produced with pro-democracy KOL to appease his Chinese fans

On January 10, 2021, Malaysian YouTuber, Uncle Roger, released a video he produced in partnership with #MikeChen, another YouTube food specialist.

Later on, after knowing that Mike Chen once criticized the Chinese authorities and backed Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters, Uncle Roger kowtowed and apologized to his Chinese fans, stating that the video has “triggered a host of negative impact on society.”

He quickly removed the video pleading Chinese fans to give him another chance, “I hope you can give Uncle Roger, who just entered China, a chance to improve!”

His move was criticised by many on Twitter. Nathan Law, Hong Kong pro-democracy activist in exile and the founding chairperson of Demosisto, wrote on his twitter that the comedian was “disgracefully sacrificing his basic morality to pander to his China fans.”

Nigel Ng, aka Uncle Roger, is a UK-based Malaysian comedian. He shot to fame in 2019 and gained over 3 million subscribers on his Youtube channel and 120 thousand fans on #Weibo, a Chinese social media platform.

Shares in Parent Company Drop as #Muji Features Xinjiang Cotton

Mutiple international brands have boycotted Xinjiang cotton exported by China due to reported forced labour and human rights violation by the Chinese Government.

Japanese brand #Muji, however, continues to feature the "Xinjiang Cotton" shirt collection under the "new products" section of their China website, as of March 25, 2021.

Muji's reaction was seen as an attempt to avoid from being targeted by Chinese netizens' call for boycotting foreign brands that refused to use Xinjiang cotton.

Nevertheless, Muji's parent company #RyohinKeikaku has seen its shares fall 6.8% on the morning of March 25, in Tokyo. According to Nikkei Asia. This suggests that "investors fear the company could be affected by the fallout".

#XinjiangCotton Incident: China's Lawyer Claims Termination Of Contract Due To Damage Of National Interest Would Not Require Any Compensation

As the Xinjiang cotton controversy continues to fester, many artists and celebrities including Eason Chan, Angelababy, Eddie Peng and Wang Yi Bo announced that they will terminate their endorsements with the brands involved in the incident.

The concern remains whether these actions are deemed to be in breach of the contract, and whether they will need to provide any compensation.

In China, a media outlet “Guancha News” quoted a Chinese lawyer explaining that artists can terminate their contrast without compensation by invoking the Civil Code’s “no abuse of civil rights to the detriment of national interest” provision.

The Hunan Provincial High People's Court in China also re-posted a short video on Weibo by “Legal Blogger”, saying that after the “D&G insult” incident, both parties will usually set a “misdeed clause” , where one party can unilaterally terminate the contract if the other party has made any “political mistakes”.

Universities in Hong Kong Dismantle June 4th Tiananmen Commemorative Symbols: "A Christmas Present for Beijing"

On December 24, 2021, the Management of the Hong Kong Lingnan University (#LU) removed and destroyed a commemorative relief of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre that was installed on campus since 2010, without any notice and conscent from the students.

The action coincided with the dismantling of other commemorative statue and sculpture by two other universities in Hong Kong right before Christmas day.

According to the vice-chair of external affairs of the 43th Student Union of the Hong Kong Lingnan University, Tang Kin-Wah, the relief and the statue of the Goddess of Democracy arrived in Hong Kong in 2010. Under the coordination of the Federation of Students and the Alliance, the two commemorative structures had exhibition tour in all universities in Hong Kong, starting with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and ending in the Lingnan University.

Back in 2010, after discussing with the university management, the student union at Lingnan University handed in a plan stating that they hoped to preserve the relief permanently on campus. Later on, the Student Union was allowed to restore the relief and convened a permanent installation ceremony with the help of the university management. The ownership of the relief belongs to the Student Union.

After the University managemeng secretly and forcefully removed the relief on Christmas' eve on 2021, some alumni made a trip back and placed white flower on the now-empty site. They described the act as an "assignment" that the university president Cheng Kwok-hon "turned in" to Beijing. "It is his [Cheng's] Christmas present for the Central Government at the end of 2021," the alumni mocked.

China Ordered #Amazon to Delete Reviews of #XiJinping’s Book

//Amazon.com Inc.’s efforts to curry favor with the Chinese government included quieting criticism of President Xi Jinping’s book on its Chinese outlet, according to a Reuters report.

The Amazon.cn entry for Xi’s “The Governance of China” had its ratings, comments and reviews scrubbed and disabled roughly two years ago in response to an edict from Beijing, the report said. Triggering the request were reviews rating the work at less than the maximum five stars, according to one of the unidentified people familiar with the incident...

The experience recounted in the report mirrors that of Apple Inc., which has grown increasingly compliant with Beijing in recent years. Apple complied with 97% of requests from the Chinese government for user device information in 2019, up significantly from 65% in 2014.

Reviews for Xi’s book of speeches and writings are blocked only on Amazon’s Chinese website. One Amazon.com entry has received 74% five-star reviews.

Other U.S. firms, such as Yahoo! and Microsoft Corp.’s LinkedIn, have, by contrast, exited the Chinese market this year, citing an increasingly challenging business and legal environment in the country.//
