Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. invited to presidential inauguration; Taiwan media: first time since 1979 when Taiwan-US diplomatic relations broke off
U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in at Capitol Hill in the early hours of Thursday morning HKT. The Taiwan Representative Office in the United States had not received an invitation to the inauguration ceremony until today (20th January), announcing that Representative Hsiao Bi-Khim was invited and will attend the inauguration. According to Taiwanese media, this is the first time Taiwan has been formally invited to attend the inauguration ceremony since the cessation of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the U.S. in 1979, a significant breakthrough for Taiwan.
The Central News Agency (CNA) reported that Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. issued a press release today stating that Hsiao has accepted the invitation from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), the organiser of the 59th U.S. Presidential Inauguration. She will represent the Taiwan government at the inauguration ceremony of President Biden and Vice President Harris on the West Lawn of the U.S. Congress and congratulate them on behalf of the Taiwan government.
