Authorities Launch #MassArrest in Hong Kong to Silence Pro-democracy Dissents

In Hong Kong, nearly 1,000 police officers were deployed on the morning of Wednesday, Jan 6, 2021, to carry out mass arrests, sweeping multiple locations in the city.

53 pro-democracy activists, aged between 23 and 64, were arrested under the National Security Law and charged with either planning and organizing or participating in the primary election in September 2020.

Secretary for Security John Lee said in a press conference that those arrested were "suspected of subversion", which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Amnesty International stated the arrests were "the starkest demonstration yet of how the national security law has been weaponized to punish anyone who dares to challenge the establishment".

The Hong Kong police also searched 72 places with court warrants and served court paper on three media outlets: Apple Daily, Stand News, and Inmedia HK, demanding them to hand over documents to assist with national security investigation.

It was also reported that the police froze a fund amounted HK$1.6 million suspected of relating to the case.

#EddieChu: “If We Were To Be Prosecuted, It Would Be As If Putting ‘Democracy’ Under Trial”

As former lawmaker and pro-democracy activist Eddie Chu Hoi-dick walked out of the police station on the night of January 7, 2021, he was welcomed with cheers from Yuen Long District Council members Eddie Chan Shu-fai, Samuel Lai Kwok-Wing, Au Kwok-Kuen and Leung Tak-Ming. They handed him cane juice and tea eggs. Chu was released on HKD30,000 bail.

Chu said if he is to be accused, it would be like putting the word "democracy” on trial in court, “If participating in a democratic election will result in being prosecuted, there will not be anything else left to say."

He mentioned that he is especially worried about the elderly arrestees. Chu said that Dr. Robert Chung Ting-yiu, director of Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute, is under a lot of stress right now. He hopes that “he and his family will be able to stay strong.”

#UN Condemns the HK Gov't for Abusing Human Rights and Freedom with #NationalSecurityLaw

Following the mass arrests of 53 political activists, academics, former legislators, current district councillors, and lawyers on Jan 6, 2021, the police arrested pro-democrscy activists #JoshuaWong and #TamTakChi for the breach of national secutity law on Jan 7, despite they were already detained. Wong was questioned without any lawyer.

The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed deep concern and said the "arrests indicate that – as had been feared – the offence of subversion under the National Security Law is indeed being used to detain individuals for exercising legitimate rights to participate in political and public life."

The Office reiterated that "offences such as subversion under the National Security Law are vague and overly broad, facilitating abusive or arbitrary implementation."

Vice-chairman of HK's Democratic Party Comments On Charges of "Subversion": How Ridiculous and Fragile the Authorities Are

Vice-chairman of the Democratic Party Lam Cheuk-Ting was one among the 53 arrested by the police during the crackdown on Jan 6, 2021. He was released on bail and left Tin Sum Police Station nearly midnight on 8 Jan, 2021.

Lam said the police officers from National Security Department raided his place and behaved rudely during the arrest, “The police came to my home with sledgehammers and pry bars. They searched over the place with a fine-tooth comb and barred my family from taking video...”

Lam was arrested three times in half a year. He stated it would not be the last time of the suppression by the authorities. “More and more ridiculous incidents may come,” he said.

He has been charged with the riotting and perverting the course of justice. Lam said it was hard to understand the police logic of the “subversion of state power”.

“Is it because I scolded Carrie Lam very badly? Until the police came into my home and I stopped filming, police finally could say it was because of the primary election. I felt it was a joke.” Lam said the authorities charge people with the subversion of the state power only because they are scared of the pro-democracy primary election.

“How ridiculous of this authority? And how fragile of this authority,” Lam said.

HK Police Force in District Councillor's Home and Crush Him on the Sofa

District Councillor Andrew Chiu Ka-yin, a coordinator of the primary election and convener of Power for Democracy, was arrested with 52 more pro-democracy figures during the Hong Kong authorities' crackdown on Jan 6, 2021.

Chiu was released on conditional bail including 50K HKD cash and confiscation of his travel document at the North Point Police Station at 11:30 pm on 7 Jan, 2021.

He is banned from leaving Hong Kong at least in the next six months and has to report at the North Point Police Station on 10 Jan, 2021.

Chiu revealed to Apple Daily that the police arrived at his home at 6 am on 6 Jan, 2021. P
The officers forced the door to open. After entering the house, the police crushed Chiu, who just came out from the bathroom, backhand on the sofa immediately and yelled, “do not resist.”

Afterwards, they combed Chiu’s home without searching a warrant issued by the court. Also, Chiu’s district councillor office in Tai Koo and his mini-warehouse were searched. During the raid, a police officer holding a baton kept watching on Chiu.

#NathanLaw : The world must do more to fight China’s crackdown in Hong Kong

The following is excerpted from an article written by Hong Kong pro-democracy activist in exile and former lawmaker Nathan Law and published on Washington Post on Jan 8, 2021.

//This mass crackdown shows Beijing is not afraid of showing its teeth and acting like a thug. It will not stop until it has eliminated all opposing voices in Hong Kong. There is no chance for coexistence — and it’s time the international community recognized that.

...One of the major reasons the Chinese Communist Party has unashamedly dared to tear off the mask of promises it had given Hong Kong is the international community’s inaction. Because of China’s ever-growing economic machine, many democratic countries have turned a blind eye to its human rights record; they may talk the talk diplomatically, but refuse to walk the walk.

...What we need for the people of Hong Kong, and democracy in general, is the determination to put human rights above trade interests. We need concrete policies that hold the authoritarian CCP accountable. Statements of concern and condemnation are not enough — and trade or investment agreements with autocracies are even worse. For Beijing, these signatures on agreements are green lights to continue their actions with impunity. The European Parliament should resolutely reject the investment deal to demonstrate leadership in the fight against authoritarianism.

On the other side of the world, the Biden administration should continue to consolidate the transatlantic cooperation to combat China’s authoritarian expansion. Global issues, such as public health and climate change, should be seen as ways to boost cooperation between democracies and pressure authoritarian regimes. The incoming administration should not fall into the trap of believing the CCP’s empty promises. Constraining the CCP’s expansion should be a priority of all of the free world.

…It’s time for the world to stand up and defend our shared universal values with them, not with feeble words but with real actions, shoulder to shoulder.//

Arrested District Councillor: It felt as though the motive was to confiscate my passport

On Jan 6, 2021, the Hong Kong authorities launched the largest crackdown on the pro-democracy camp since the implementation of the National Security Law in June 2020. The Hong Kong Police Force arrested 53 pro-democracy figures including former lawmakers, current district councillors, campaigners, lawyer and scholars, all in one day.

51 of them were detained overnight for over 40 hours before they were bailed on the evening of Jan 8, 2021

Democractic Party member Wan Siu-kin, formerly lawmaker and currently serving as a district councilor in Kwai Tsing, said the police had record his testimony on video for 3 times, with officers from the national security bureau handling the final recording.

During the process, the police showed him a newspaper cutting, which read "Ten Steps to 'Laam Chaau' [literally meaning, stir fry together]" and asked if Wan knew about it, and who said it.

Wan said the police also showed three short recordings about the legislative primaries that took place in July 2020. To his understanding, the officers from the national security bureau only handed the short recordings to other police officers on the same day and in a hurry.

Wan had the impression that everything was "done in a rush" and that it "felt as though the motive was to confiscate (his) passport".
