China Spokesperson Calls 12 Hongkongers Secretly Detained by China "Elements attempting to separate Hong Kong from China"

On Friday, Sept 11, 2020, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his deep concern over 12 Hong Kong democracy activists being held in China. Pompeo stressed that they have been denied access to lawyers and the Chinese authorities have not provided information on their welfare or the charges against them.

The families of the 12 Hongkongers met the press on Saturday.

The relatives were tormented by the fact that they do not have news of their family members and that they cannot even know whether they are still alive. The relatives hoped the Hong Kong Government would seek their return and called for international attention to the legal and human rights violations in China.

One day after the statement made by the grieving families, the Chinese Central Government responded through Hua Chunying, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, by calling the 12 Hongkongers captured by China "elements attempting to separate Hong Kong from China."

Hua tweeted the following:

"Seriously?! Fact check: The 12 people were arrested for illegally crossing the border in waters. They are not democratic activists, but elements attempting to separate Hong Kong from China."

China, however, did not respond to the accusations regarding legal and human rights violation in China.

After detaining the 12 Hongkongers for 22 days, the Yiantian Branch of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau announced on Sunday that 12 people were detained on suspicion for "trespassing the border".

Pompeo Said China Has the Most Suppressed Religious Freedom

During the visit to Rome, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the seriousness of religious freedom suppression in China today was not comparable to other places. He also called on the Vatican to join the United States in condemning China's violation of religious freedom.

During a symposium at the U.S. Embassy in the Vatican, Pompeo said the Chinese Communist Party desired to eliminate the lamp of freedom on a horrifying scale. The suppression of every religious group in China included Protestantism family-churches, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong practitioners, and Catholics.

The Vatican's Secretary for Relations with States Paul Gallagher attended the conference but did not mention China in his speech. He criticised some western people for advocating gender ideology and violating religious freedom.

Europe and the US establish dialogue channels to discuss Chinese affairs

U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of European Union, Josep Borrell, agreed in a joint statement after a conference call on Friday (October 23) to establish a dialogue channel to discuss China issues, using the U.S. State Department and the EU's External Action Service as counterparts.

In the statement, Pompeo and Borrell said both parties welcomed the arrangement to establish a channel for experts from Europe and the United States to discuss China comprehensively. Moreover, the two parties will send their deputies to hold a high-level meeting in mid-November to discuss issues involving human rights, security and transnational relations.

US Lists "National Association for China's Peaceful Unification" as a Foreign Mission

The US State Department announced that they had listed National Association for China's Peaceful Unification (#NACPU) as a Foreign Mission, and had also withdrawn an agreement which promotes the local corporation between China and the US.

Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of States, said in a statement that the United Front Work Department under CCP has control on NACPU in Washington. The mission of this CCP department is to eliminate the threat to CCP governing, and to promote and expand its influence overseas. As a result, the US State Department has to label NACPU, to let outsiders recognise that the information is from Beijing.

After being a foreign mission, NACPU is required to submit a list of information to the US, including employee lists and their assets owned or leased.

According to the introduction in the Chinese United Front Work website, a group of Diaoyu activists founded NACPU in the Washington area in February 1973. They aim at insisting on the One-China principle, opposing all words and practices that split China's land and sovereignty, promoting the exchange and communication in various areas across the Straits, uniting Chinese abroad, and safeguarding the rights and interest of the Chinese. They also play a role in anti-independence and unification activities overseas.

Chinese Foreign Ministry says Pompeo has "Sinister Motives" and Will Fight Back Firmly after Pompeo says Taiwan Is Not Part of China,

In a radio interview yesterday (12th), the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said "Taiwan has never been a part of China" and that the US commitment to Taiwan was already a cross-party consensus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference today (13th) that Pompeo had ignored the fundamental interests of the Chinese and American peoples for his political self-interest, confusing right with wrong and fabricating lies in order to mislead public opinion and disrupt the public perceptions, further damage China-US relations and jeopardise peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added, "The world has known his sinister intentions". Wang Wenbin told the followers of Pompeo that any act that undermines the core interests of China and interferes in Chinese internal affairs will get a resolute response from China, and will not stop its historical trend of unification.

Taiwan's presidential spokesman, Chang Tun-Han, also responded to the incident this morning (13 November), noting that he had noticed the remarks from Pompeo and that it was an indisputable fact that the Republic of China is a sovereign state. On the cross-strait and region, Taiwan has always advocated that the two sides of the Strait should work together to safeguard the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, based on the principle of reciprocity and dignity. Taiwan will also continue to fulfil its international obligations and contribute to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait and the region.

Pompeo Says Taiwan Has Never Been Part of China, Spokesperson for Taiwan’s President Calls It Undisputed Fact

Speaking about cross-strait issues in a radio interview on 12 November, American time, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said Taiwan is a "model for democracy" and that America’s commitment to Taiwan cuts across party lines, adding that “Taiwan has not been a part of China”. This is a shift from the position taken by the US since it made its three joint communiqués with China in the 1970s and 80s.

Spokesperson of Taiwan’s presidential office, Chang Tun-han, said on the morning of 13 November that he is aware of Pompeo's remarks and that it is an indisputable fact that the Republic of China (ROC) is a sovereign state. He said it has always been Taiwan’s cross-strait and regional policy that the two sides along the Strait should work together to maintain peace and stability in the region on the basis of mutual respect, adding that Taiwan will continue to fulfil its international obligations and contribute to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait and the region.

US State Secretary Condemns China for Turning Hong Kong into the East Berlin

December 21, 2020 is the Winter Solstice which symbolizes family union; however, the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers have been detained in China for more than 120 days.

On Dec 18, US state secretary Mike Pompeo again raised concern over the 12 Hongkongers and comdemned China for violating human rights:

"The Hong Kong 12 should be released immediately. Their so-called 'crime' was to flee tyranny. Communist China today is turning Hong Kong into the East Berlin of yesteryear, actively preventing its own people from seeking freedom elsewhere."

Pompeo demands China to Unconditionally Release of 12 pro-democracy HK activists: They deserve a hero’s welcome abroad

US Secretary of State #MikePompeo called for the immediate release of 10 Hong Kong activists who were sentenced to between seven months and three years in jail by a Chinese court.

The ten Hongkongers were arrested by the Chinese authorities arrested at sea as they reportedly fled the city and tried to reach Taiwan by speedboat in August 2020.

On December 30, 3020, the Chinese court in Shenzhen sentenced eight of the Hongkongers to seven months in jail, one to two years and one to three years. Two underage Hongkongers were handed over to Hong Kong police, since they have been detained in China in August 2020.

Pompeo said, "The ‘Hong Kong 12’ who tried to flee this tyranny deserved a hero’s welcome abroad, not capture, a secret trial and prison sentences."

The United States strongly condemns the Shenzhen court’s actions and calls for the 10 members of the group who were sentenced to jail terms to be immediately and unconditionally released.”

“The CCP’s persecution of the Hong Kong 12 – two of whom were juveniles at the time of their arrest – exposes once again Beijing’s brutality, blatant disregard for the international treaties it has signed, and its disdain for the rights of the Hong Kong people,” Pompeo added.

Pompeo further expressed in the statement, " A regime that prevents its own people from leaving can lay no claim to greatness or global leadership. It is simply a fragile dictatorship, afraid of its own people."

Pompeo Urges U.S. University To Scrutinize Chinese Students To Avoid Stealing And Brainwashing

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday urged U.S. universities to scrutinize China's assistance and students, warning that Beijing was set on to steal American innovations.

Speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Pompeo said the United States welcomes Chinese who "genuinely" want study in the country, but also cited two cases of Chinese students who were charged with spying and some cases of Beijing harassing of students abroad. “If we don’t educate ourselves, if we’re not honest about what’s taking place, we’ll get schooled by Beijing,” he said. “The Chinese Communist Party knows it can never match our innovation, that’s why it sends 400 thousand students a year to the United States of America to study,” he added.

Once again, he called on U.S. universities to shut down all Confucius Institutes, “We cannot allow this tyrannical regime to steal our stuff, to build their military might and brainwash our people, or buy off our institutions to help them cover up these activities… We need administrators to close Confucius Institutes and investigate what so-called ‘student groups’ backed by the CCP money are actually up to on their campuses,” he declared.
