Messages to Deceased Protesters: We Dare Not Forget You, We Dare Not Giving Up

20:48 | Kwun Tong
Civilians wrote messages in remembrance of deceased protesters and victms of state violence, and to encourage each other in their fight for democracy.

These words shout and cry for protestors in Hong Kong. Chan Yin-Lam will truly rest in peace only when police are held accountable for what they've done. Hong Kongers should never forget and never forgive. We must stay strong and fearless in the face of totalitarianism!

Graffiti at Sheung Tak Carpark Reminds Hongkongers to Stand Up Against Injustice and State Violence

Police are guarding at every level of Sheung Tak Carpark, where 22-year-old Chow Tsz-lok fell from height for reasons unknown during police operation in the area last November. Chow passed away after hospitalization. The carpark has since then become a site for memorials to take place.

March 22 marks 6 months after the death of 15-year-old Chan Yin-lam who used to study in a school in the same district. The cause of Chan's death remains unknown. Having participated in the pro-democracy movement, her body, naked, were discovered in the waters last October. Police said there was nothing suspicious.

Citizens Gathered in remembrance of Chan Yin-lam and Vowed to Continue Fighting
for Freedom

It has been beyond anyone's understanding that a peaceful memorial service could attract such a large number of police, forcing into the gathering and provoking civilians on site.

Accompanying hymn and solemn prayers were yelling and clamoring from the police. Who keeps us away from forgetting, and who teaches us not to forget?

Civilians on the scene vowed to carry on fighting for democracy for Chan Yin-lam and all other deceased protesters.

How the Coronavirus Travel From China to the World

From New York Times

//Many of the first known cases clustered around a seafood market in Wuhan, China, a city of 11 million and a transportation hub.

But Chinese officials did not alert the public to the risks in December. It wasn’t until Dec. 31 that they alerted the World Health Organization and released a statement — and a reassurance.

“The disease is preventable and controllable,” the Chinese government said.

About 7 million people left Wuhan in January, before travel was restricted. At least 175,000 people left just on Jan 1. Thousands of travelers were infected.

By the time Chinese officials acknowledged the risk of human-to-human transmission on Jan 21, local outbreaks were already seeded in Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities.

...international travel continued as normal. Thousands of people flew out of Wuhan to cities around the world: Over 2,200 people to Sydney; over 900 went to New York every month on average; over 15,000 went to Bangkok.

The first known overseas case appeared in mid-January, a 61-year-old woman who traveled from Wuhan to Bangkok despite having a fever, headache and a sore throat.

About 85 percent of infected travelers went undetected, researchers believe. But they were still contagious.

It was only at the end of January that Wuhan was placed under a lockdown and airlines started canceling flights.

It was too late. Outbreaks were already growing in over 30 cities across 26 countries, most seeded by travelers from Wuhan.//

Experts from China told Participants Not to Worry About the Reactions during Vaccine Trial

According to China's state-run tabloid Global Times, China sees developing a vaccine to treat the coronavirus as a "battle that China cannot afford to lose". The opinion article came out, after the US announced on March 16 that a trial to evaluate a possible vaccine will be launched.

Currently in China, 108 participants, aged between 18 and 60, had received a vaccine developed by the Chinese millitary and a Chinese pharmaceutical firm called CanSinos Biologics. These volunteers are all residents of Wuhan, where the coronavirus first emerged last year.

In an interview conducted by a Chinese media Xin Jin Bao, one of the participants revealed that they suffered muscle pain, fever, fatigue and dizziness after vaccination; however, the experts in charge told the volunteers not to be worried about these systems.

Migrant domestic helpers: The problem is how we can protect ourselves inside the employer's house?

In a press conference held on March 22, The Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Union urged the Hong Kong government to protect migrant workers' rights during the coronavirus outbreak.

In view of quarantine regulations including mandatory 14-day quarantine after returning to Hong Kong from overseas, union secretary Shiella Estrada pointed out the need for equal protection for the employer and the employee.

The union has been urging the government to abolish the mandatory live-in policy, which requires domestic helpers to live with their employer, especially when the policy put the workers in vulnerable position during epidemic.

The union also qouted sex harassment and other physical injuries as examples.

Hong Kong Journalists Association urges Chief Executive to investigate police violence on press

The Hong Kong Journalists Association issued on Sunday, March 22 an open letter to the Chief Executive of HKSAR, Carrie Lam calling on her attention on “Police Violence” towards journalists, pointing out that the behaviours of the riot police officers are eroding the freedom of the press.

The letter urged Carrie Lam to look into the collective violation of law by the police and to immediately rectify the black sheeps in the police force in order to rebuild public trust towards the Police.

The Association reiterated that although the Police Commissioner Chris Tang denied that the frontline police were targeting journalists, consecutive cases of attack since June 2019 showed that they are not isolated cases.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE CARRIE LAM ON “POLICE VIOLENCE”

From Hong Kong Journalists Association, 22 March 2020

"Dear Chief Executive Mrs Carrie Lam,

We have sent letters earlier to you and the Commissioner for Police Mr Chris Tang separately regarding police violence towards journalists. In your reply, you said the Government respects press freedom. Judging from the behaviours of some riot police officers, the opposite is true. Last night, there were several cases of assault of journalists by police officers – again. As head of the Hong Kong SAR, how can you turn a blind eye to the collective violation of law by the Police? We urge you to take immediate action to rectify the black sheeps in the police force in order to rebuild public trust towards the Police..."

Democracy activists freed from Chinese jail back in custody in Hong Kong

Eight Hong Kong democracy activists, jailed in China last year after being captured at sea, arrived back in the city and were immediately detained on Mar 22 by Hong Kong Police.

“(Authorities) never communicated with the family about the whole arrangement so the family members are forced to come here and wait all day until now,” activist and barrister Chow Hang-tung, speaking on behalf of a concern group for the defendants, said at a press briefing outside a Hong Kong police station close to the mainland border.

Among the eight is Andy Li, arrested under a sweeping national security law Beijing imposed on the Asian financial hub in June 2020 that critics say is aimed at crushing dissent.

In Dec 2020, a Chinese court sentenced 10 of the 12 to between seven months and three years in jail. Defendants Tang Kai-yin and Quinn Moon, who were sentenced to three and two years, respectively, are still in southern Guangdong province.

EU, China impose tit-for-tat sanctions over Xinjiang abuses

The European Union imposed sanctions on Mar 22 on four Chinese officials, including a top security director, for human rights abuses in Xinjiang, to which Beijing responded with its own sanctions on Europeans.

The first significant sanctions was imposed by EU since an EU arms embargo in 1989 following the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy crackdown indicates a change in posture.

In its Official Journal, the EU accused Chen of “arbitrary detentions and degrading treatment inflicted upon Uighurs and people from other Muslim ethnic minorities, as well as systematic violations of their freedom of religion or belief”.
