Pro-Beijing Lawmaker "Asks On Behalf of The Young People" What Would Happen After 2047,
Carrie Lam: Urge Them to Cherish One Country Two Systems Otherwise "They Could Be Responsible for the Situation That They Are Most Worried About"

On Jan 16, Chief Executive Carrie Lam attended the question and answer session of the Legislative Council.  Anna Chiang of the pro-Beijing party DAB claimed to raise a question "on behalf of the young people".  She said young people want democracy, but this made her and "foreigners" question as to "whether Hong Kong does not have freedom and democracy".

Chiang then answered her own question, saying that "the young people are actually concerned about 2047" and asking what the government would do to make the young people believe there is still one country two systems after 2047. Pro-democracy lawmaker Charles Mok then yelled "five demands not one less", but was asked to leave.

Carrie Lam said that Hong Kong SAR operates directly under the Chinese Government.  As long as Hong Kong adheres to the one country two systems principle and respects the differences in the two systems, there would be no changes after 2047 and stability would go on. She also claimed that most of the young people were born after the handover.  They receive education and employment in a stable and prosperous Hong Kong under one country two systems.  She urged everyone to cherish one country two systems and do not undermine "such important principle and direction because of a misunderstanding".  "They could be responsible for the situation that they are most worried about today".

Helena Wong of the Democratic Party burst into an uproar in response to Carrie Lam's statement.  She was then asked to leave by Andrew Leung, the pro-Beijing President of the LegCo.

7 Forbidden Topics in Universities in China

Editor's note: Colleges and universities in China have been instructed to steer clear of seven topics in their courses. Reasons provided by Xi Jinping administration showed an inconceivable retrogression in Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ideology, probably an explicit evidence of the leader's sense of insecurity and his anxiety in losing powers to rivalries.

1. Universal Values
Cause: they challenges or even expels Chinese commmunist party leaders and the party's leadership

2. Freedom of Press
Cause: The idea upsets the stability of CCP and society

3. Civil Society
Cause: It creates a new force at grassroots level independent of the CCP

4. Civil Rights
Cause: they upset the CCP’s macro-control over citizens

5. CCP's historical aberrations Cause: this might undermine CCP’s legitimacy to rule or overturn CCP

6. Elite Cronyism / privileged capitalist class
Cause: it 'distorts' the fact that political reform necessitates economic liberalization.

7. Judicial Independence
Cause: it challenges CCP's rule and authority if the courts are no longer under the direct control of CCP

The Release of Report on Police Suspended

//The Independent Police Complaints Council has indefinitely postponed the release of a preliminary report into the handling of social unrest as it awaits the outcome of a judicial review of its powers.

...Media reports earlier this month suggested that the IPCC's initial report would show "many shortcomings" in the policing of protests last summer.

The report would cover only the first month of social unrest in June last year, including a mass demonstration on June 9, protests outside the Legislative Council on June 12 and the storming of the Legco complex on July 1.

Other contentious issues, such as the police's response to an attack by a white-shirted mob on members of the public and protesters at Yuen Long Station on July 21, would have to wait for further reports.//

Re-elected BAR Chairman Philip Dykes Confirms Credible Media Reports on Police Brutality in Hong Kong, Despite Carrie Lam's Denial

The Bar Association held its annual general election on January 16, with its current Chairman, Philip Dykes SC re-elected without contest, while incumbent Executive member, Anita Yip, SC was elected as vice chairman.

Dykes hopes that he can speak up more for his fellow industry players in the coming year, rather than responding to contentious issues surrounding Hong Kong. However, he admitted frankly that it is too difficult to predict the future, and that his hopes could fall through.

HKSAR Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, when attending Q and A session in Legislative Council in the morning of Jan 16, denied the existence of police brutality in Hong Kong and she called on the community to support the police. Dykes said that he was both amused and amazed by Lam’s statement, and he even made a sarcastic remark, asking Carrie Lam which media does she subscribe to.

Countering Lam’s view, Dykes reiterated that there were numerous credible reports of the police using excessive force, including some by renowned international organizations. Besides, members of the IPCC also suggested hiring experts for further investigations.

More #CCP-styled Slogans Found on Hong Kong's Highest Peak, #XiJinping's order: "Be ready to the war and win"

In January 2021, Chinese Communist Party-style slogan written in Simplied Chinese, which read "Listen to the Party and Follow the CCP's order", "Strict Law and Discipline, Correct Social Atmosphere", and "Loyalty and Preseverance" were found on the wall of the PLA-occupied Radar Station on Tai Mo Shan in Hong Kong, shocking the local population.

Recently, hikers found another newly added simplified Chinese slogan on this highest mountain in Hong Kong. The new slogan reads "Be ready to the war and win".

The Stand News reporter visited Tai Mo Shan on the evening of 16 January, 2021 and saw related simplified Chinese slogan.

According to the website of People's Liberation Army (#PLA) News, the command "be ready to the war and win" was made by Xi Jinping, the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) leader in 2007. Xi told the Chinese militants that the army is "to fight", "maintain a state of high alert" and "be ready to the war, And win."

The Hong Kong's Security Bureau responded to the media inquiries about the land use regarding the Radar Station where the simplified Chinese slogans and the PLA troops were found in Hong Kong.

It was revealed that the Radar Station was the government's land, but was not zoned for military use. The land is supposedly used as a communication facility for different organisations, including the purpose of defence. However, the Hong Kong authorities refused to disclose the name of the organisation and the purpose of the security in details.

Pro-democracy protesters left Hong Kong: fear for unfair trial and growing oppression

As in 2021, tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters involved in anti-ELAB movement has been arrested and many have been put behind bars in Hong Kong.

Since the Chinese Government tightened their grip in Hong Kong through imposition of #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020, many pro-democracy Hongkongers attempted to flee the city to Taiwan, among them were the 12 youths arrested by Chinese authorities in August 2020. Ten of them faced prison sentence on charges of illegally crossing border, while two minors were sent back to Hong Kong for trial.

Apple Daily revealed that five other protesters successfully fled to Taiwan in 2020. With assistance from many people in the United States and #Taiwan, they arrived in the #US in mid-January 2021 and are planning to seek political asylum.

One of them told the newspaper in an interview that there will no longer be fair trial in Hong Kong after the National Security Law takes effect. Fear of oppression and arrest, he set foot on an one-way journey to leave Hong Kong.

China pushes “vaccine diplomacy” in Southeast Asia

China is using supplies of its Sinovac Biotech’s vaccine to boost its influence in Southeast Asia, which was the main focus of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s tour in mid of January 2021.

“China wants to show that they are behind ASEAN countries as the vaccination stage of the pandemic approaches,” Aaron Jed Rabena, a research fellow at Manila-based think tank Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress.

Indonesia has a deal to receive about 230 million does of vaccine with Sinovac, Nocacax and WHO’s COVAX facility and government has received 3 million ready-to-use dose of Sinovac.

In Myanmar, Wang promised 300,00 dose of the Sinoca shots. The Chinese vaccine has also drawn attention in countries which Wang has not visited in this tour.

In Hong Kong, a New Party Calls for Stability (and Raises Suspicions)

A group of businessmen, born in the mainland China, sought to bring that ardor to Hong Kong, as the founders of the city’s newest political party, Bauhinia Party. The Bauhinia Party’s founders deny that they are puppets of Beijing, but they offer themselves to Beijing as a new model for allies, as a “Trojan horse” for the Chinese government.

Many in the pro-democracy camp see the new party as yet another sign that Hong Kong is becoming just another mainland city.

While the pro-Beijing camp has always professed loyalty to the central government, its members have taken care to emphasize the differences between their city and the mainland.

Pompeo Reveal Researchers at Wuhan Institute of Virology Got Infected as Early as Fall 2019, urging WHO to Conduct Thorough Investigation.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, issued a statement yesterday (January 15) saying the U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) have developed the symptoms consistent with COVID-19 in the fall of 2019. The U.S. government stressed that a pandemic could have been avoided and that any responsible country would have invited World Health Organization (WHO) experts within days of the outbreak, but China refused offer of help. "Until the CCP allows a full and thorough accounting of what happened in Wuhan, it is only a matter of time until China births another pandemic and inflicts it on the Chinese people, and the world," he stated.

Pompeo issued a statement saying that a WHO investigation team arrived in China this week to trace the source of the outbreak. The U.S. government took the opportunity to share new information about WIV in 2019 and called on the WHO to conduct a thorough investigation into origin of COVID-19. He said the U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers from the institute have developed the same symptoms as COVID-19 in the fall of 2019.

The statement said the WIV had studied the bat virus strain RaTG13 as early as 2016, which was 96.2% similar to the COVID-19 virus identified by the Institute in January 2020. The U.S. government said the institute's work has lacked transparency since the outbreak and suspected it may have been involved in research that enhanced the virus' transmissibility and lethality.

How should Britain respond to the takeover of Hong Kong?

How should Britain respond to the takeover of Hong Kong?

From coronavirus to the brutal treatment of Hong Kong, the behaviour of the Chinese Communist party has made it clear that the approach of liberal democracies to China must change.

Hong Kong has thrived as a great international financial hub on a tripartite foundation - freedom of capital, freedom of information and the rule of law. However, it is obviously to see the damage on the economy since the National Security Law enacted.

China leaders see liberal democracy and its attributes as enemies.

Boris Johnson’s government was right to offer all those who hold British National Overseas passports in Hong Kong a route to work, study and even assume full citizenship here.

The Prime Minister should establish a government committee that manages the totality of our relationship with China. We should work with the new Biden administration, the G7 countries and others such as Australia, India and South Korea to form a partnership of open societies for a balanced world order based on agreements that are kept, free markets and the rule of law.
