Sheryl is afflicted with aplastic anaemia, a disease which caused her body to produce insufficient blood cells. Ever since developing the condition in her teenage years, Sheryl has needed frequent blood transfusions to replenish her blood cells and platelets. After receiving a bone marrow transplant late last year, however, she suffered a complication known as pulmonary vein occlusion, blocking her blood circulation. She is now in ICU where her life is sustained by heart-lung machine.
Sheryl's mother describes her as a brave and strong woman, enduring years of frequent hospital visits without complaint.
One time, Sheryl phoned her from her hospital bed saying, "this disease is painful, but I don't want to die"; Sheryl still has a lot of fight left in her. A woman cried out in terror. A blood-soaked man tried to move towards the door. Then they returned. Seven months ago, returning civilians, journalists and demonstrators were indiscriminately attacked by armed mobs at Yuen Long MTR station.
Though Hongkongers were known for their amnesia, many refused to forget one of the darkest nights of Hong Kong history on July 21, 2019.
Miss A (pseudonym) was one of them. She joined the commemorative sit-in in Causeway Bay Station on February 23, 2020, holding a placard which called the incident “A humanitarian crisis deliberately plotted by the Hong Kong Police Force”.
The distant agonies of the flesh and of iron still exert a tenacious hold in her memory. “We Hongkongers are forgetful. But this is indelible.” Under her Guy Fawkes mask, she told us her feelings to the incident, “When watching movies or soap opera, I always think collusions between the law-enforcement and the dark underbelly of our city were inevitable, as they can both profit from it. However, it is totally unacceptable in this case.” She castigated the police for their inaction. “How can they allow triads ‘to teach citizens a lesson’?” she said angrily, “this is an utter demonstration of the incompetence of the police force.” She also decried the police force for their sloppiness in investigating the matter. “I think everyone is angry with it, as the attack involved all walks of life in our city, including even pregnant women and elderly people.”
Meanwhile, she was touched when she saw many show up to the commemoration. “The Wuhan coronavirus epidemic has somehow made many forget the movement,” she admitted. “But seeing many showing up today moved me deeply.” She reminded her fellow citizens to continue with their resistance, “We have to keep the fire and continue our struggle. There isn’t just you in this revolution, we have also many other companions, including in prison or exile. We shall not give up.”
Miss A was one of the many nameless victims of the Yuen Long July 21 triad attack: As ordinary citizens, they by the mere cruelness of fate had to witness such horrifying atrocities. Those were hours that feel like minutes and seconds that would never end. Yet they chose to remember it and called on Hongkongers not to forget the injustice caused by state violence. 12 Japan firms will kill business deals involving #Uyghur forced labor
//Twelve major Japanese companies have established a policy of ceasing business deals with Chinese companies found to benefit from the forced labor of the Muslim Uyghur minority in China's far-western Xinjiang region.
In a report last year, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute identified over 80 global companies "directly or indirectly benefiting from the use of Uyghur workers outside #Xinjiang through abusive labor transfer programs."
Kyodo News recently asked 14 Japanese companies mentioned by the think tank how they plan to respond.
With the exception of Panasonic Corp., which declined to comment, all companies either denied directly doing business with companies suspected of benefiting from forced labor or said they could not verify the claims against their suppliers.
The 12 include Toshiba Corp., Fast Retailing Co., operator of the Uniqlo casual clothing brand, Sony Corp. and Hitachi Ltd.//

Paul Harris, the New Bar Association head, has warned that calls from pro-Beijing figures in Hong Kong to radically reform the territory’s judiciary could spell “the end of the present legal system”. Proposed council would amount to “a powerful body which would tell judges what to do” and would be “a major backward step”.
Harris suffered a barrage of criticism from China’s state media and central government last month after he suggested to change some provisions of the security law.
