Hong Kong Netizens Call For Protest on Original #LegCo Election Day; Retired Cardinal Demands the Government to Restart Postponed Election

Hong Kong's Legislative Election, which takes place every 4 years, was initially scheduled on Sunday, September 6, 2020; however, Chief Executive Carrie Lam postponed it for a year by invoking the Emergency Regulations Ordinance and citing the coronavirus pandemic as a reason.

Netizens called for a protest in Kowloon on the original election day to rally against the National Security Law, the health code and the postponement of the election.

Retired cardinal Joseph Zen of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong demanded the authorities to “retract the decision and restart the election”. Zen wrote on Facebook that while citizens “should refrain from taking part in illegal activities or troubling the (riot) police”, they could make whatever noises possible at whichever premises for 1 minute: "It could take place in front of a window, at doorstep, on a car--using horns, drums, gong; clap hands; hit a pile wood; play music, or a song. Is it an expression of anguish or is it an agonized demand?"

Zen also quoted that the latest poll by the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI), which indicated 70% of Hong Kong citizens considered the outbreak abating. It is therefore the right time for the government to restart the postponed LegCo election as soon as possible.

Pro-Democracy Activists Around the World Call On Freedom-Loving People to Boycott Disney's Mulan Played by Pro-Police Violence Chinese Actress

Disney's new film Mulan, featuring Chinese actress Liu Yifei, is available on the video streaming platform Disney+ since September 4, 2020.

The female lead Liu Yifei is known for her open support for the Hong Kong police as early as August 2019. On her Chinese social media account Weibo, Liu shared a post by China state-media People's Daily with the heading "I support Hong Kong Police, You can hit me now. What a shame for Hong Kong". Her pro-police stance has triggered calls for boycotting the film Mulan soon after Disney announced the cast.

On September 5, 2020, pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Twitter urged Hongkongers not to support the pro-police violence Liu and asked all freedom-loving people to boycott the film.

Veteran Chinese pro-democracy activist and writer Wang Dan also shared news about the boycott for Mulan in Taiwan after the film was released in theatre.

Wang reminded his readers:

"if you still remember how Hong Kong youngsters--many of them have not even reached their 20s--were violated by the police...

If you also think that celebrities like Liu Yifei who make money by forsaking their conscience do not deserve...

If you agree that justice and righteousness are worth more than a film..."

Wang said there is not much one can actually do for Hongkongers, but "at least one can stand against pro-Chinese Communist Party artists together".

September 6, 2020: The Election Day Cancelled by the HK Government Without Consultation

September 6, 2020 was the original day set for the Legislative Election, a general election in Hong Kong which takes place every 4 years and decides the constituency of the legislature in the new term.

However, the authorities have cited the coronavirus pandemic as a reason and postponed it by a year. The unconsulted decision triggered much opposition from the local population and noises from the international community.

Netizens called for a Sunday protest on Sept 6, 2020 to condemn the postponement of the election and oppose the enactment of the National Security Law and the pending implementation of Health Code.

According to several news agencies, the police have already driven out a deployment plan for a 2,000-strong team. An online news media also recorded a video with construction workers glueing road bricks to the concrete ground along Sai Yeung Choi South Street in Mong Kok.
