Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Casts Early Ballot

The General Elections in Taiwan will be held today on #11Jan. The incumbent president Tsai Ing-wen, seeking for a second term, arrived at the polling station at New Taipei Municipal Xiulang Elementary School at 9 am to cast her vote.

Upon arriving at the polling station, Tsai waited in the queue outside, casually chatting with other voters. After about 10 minutes, she entered the station.

“I hope voters can use their ballots to make our democracy stronger,” said Tsai after voting. She also expressed her wish that voting can be conducted smoothly. However, she didn’t respond to journalists’ questions about her mood or confidence for her second-term.

Tsai’s running mate and Vice-presidential candidate William Lai Ching-te also cast his ballot at around 9 am. He said he had a good night's sleep as all campaign work had finished, “The weather is very nice. Turn-out rates were usually high with nice weather,” He said to laughs. He encouraged people to vote, “to collectively decide the future of Taiwan” as he stated. KMT presidential nominee Han Kuo-yu arrived at the polling location at his native Kaohsiung earlier today and didn’t answer questions from the press.

20 million eligible voters are to cast their vote to elect the 15th President and Vice President of Taiwan, and all 113 members of 10th Legislative Yuan in this election. Polls will close at 4 pm and vote counting will ensue, which will end at 10 pm by earliest estimates.

Editor’s note:
The election is held at the midst of interference from the PRC. The Diplomat reported that the PRC was actively engaged in political warfare through influence operations to disrupt the election and manipulate the political system. Former Chinese spy William Wang recently defected to Australia for political asylum, admitted that the CPC backed the pro-China candidate Han Kuo-yu to stop Tsai Ing-wen, hostile towards the PRC, from being re-elected.

Vigorous Elections in Taiwan; Voters More Concerned About Candidates’ Political Views and Economic Policy

Voting in the Taiwan election started at 8am today. In one of the polling stations in Yunlin District, Kaohsiung City, many voters casted their votes within the first 2 hours. A voter expressed her worries towards the election as she believes that the election result will determine whether or not voting is still possible and whether freedom of speech can still be enjoyed in the future. She acknowledged the importance of elections, as civilians can choose their leaders. She expressed that she hopes for elected candidate to stand firm in their believes despite facing oppression.

Some voters believe that the political views of the candidates are important. However, whether their policies can boost the economy in Taiwan is still the most importanr, and the other factors can be disregarded. Some votes are concerned about candidates’ diplomatic policies as the economy will be affected.

Some voters think the election is particularly vigorous, but they hope all parties will respect the result as true democracy is based on mutual respect.

She expressed that she felt regrettable initially due to the living condition; however, she now believes that it’s a right decision made as Hong Kong is “deteriorating”.

Republic of China Debts Recalled as US Senator Introduces Resolution Demanding China to Repay USD$1.6 Trillion Debt

US Republican Senator Martha McSally put forward a resolution on Thursday demanding China to repay its sovereign debt of more than USD$1.6 trillion (around HKD$12.5 trillion), interests included, to US bondholders.

McSally said, “China has repeatedly failed to honor its obligations to America, taking American families’ money and jobs… We are holding China accountable for its debt and for unleashing the coronavirus on the world. We demand China pay back the $1.6 trillion it owes to American families.”

The bonds were issued in 1912 by the Republic of China, which subsequently migrated to Taiwan. The People’s Republic of China established its sovereignty in 1949 and insists that Taiwan is part of China. According to international law, a successor state is responsible for the debts of its predecessor.

Chinese Media Censors "Republic of China" on New Taiwan Passport

When reporting the news about Taiwan's new passport design, a Chinese media, GuanCha, on Sept 2, 2020 pixelated the Chinese words "REPUBLIC OF CHINA" and the Taiwan's national emblem on the new cover, with only the English words "TAIWAN" and "PASSPORT" shown.

Such way of reporting has given rise to heated debate among netizens in both Taiwan and China.

Hong Kong Authorities Try to Stop Double Ten Celebration for Taiwan in Hong Kong By All Means

October 10, also known as the "double ten day", is Taiwan's national day. In Hong Kong, pro-Taiwan supporters including the Kuomingtang (#KMT) supporters often gather and celebrate by raising Taiwan's 'Blue Sky, White Sun' flag on the New Year's Day and Oct 10.

The Red House (Hung Lau) located in Tuen Mun Park used to be their popular gathering spot to observe the flag raising ceremony, where the anthem of the Republic of China (#ROC) is played. The house is a historical site in Hong Kong, for its relation to the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, which brought the imperial system to an end and the Republican Government to form in China. Oct 10, 1911 was the day where the Wuchang Uprising, one important operation of the revolution, began. This house in Hong Kong used to be a base for revolutionary activities against the Qing imperial court in the early 20th Century.

On Oct 10, 2020, not many pro-Taiwan supporters had shown up, as they usually did in any other years, due to the fear over the infringement of the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

Nevertheless, over 50 police were deployed in Tuen Mun Park. Tens of security guards, who claimed to be sent by the 'owner of the Red Mansion', barred civilians from approaching the site. According to Apple Daily, the park, which is managed by the government's Leisure and Cultural Services Department (#LCSD), has also planted tall bushes with thorns near the Red House.

#Taiwan President on Taiwan's National Day: The Year 2020 is a "Generational Opportunity" and a "Chance to determine own Future"

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen delivered her speech celebrating the National Day of the Republic of China (#ROC) on Oct 10, 2020.

Tsai emphasized that Taiwan was one of the few countries in the world that maintained positive economic growth despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Tsai raised concern over Hong Kong's National Security Law and pointed out that "it is clear that democracy, peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific are currently facing serious challenges".

While Taiwan-US economic cooperation is expected to be deepened, Tsai said Taiwan-China dialogue would be possible "as long as the Beijing authorities are willing to resolve antagonisms and improve cross-strait relations, while parity and dignity are maintained".

Tsai ended her speech by the following remark:

“Let's wish that 20 years from now, when Taiwanese look back on 2020, they will remember this as the year we grasped a generational opportunity, bravely forging ahead in rapidly changing times to overcome challenges and throw off our shackles, giving them a chance to determine their own future."

#Google Wrongly Displays the Establishment Year of the Republic of China on Taiwan's National Day

On Oct 10, 2020, as Taiwan was celebrating its the National Day, Google also wrongly displayed the establishment year of the Republic of China (#ROC), stating the year as 1949.

Based on history, the Republic of China was established in 1912 following the collapse of the Qing dynasty. The ROC had been run by the Nationalist Government (#Kuomintang; #KMT) with a base in China, until the Communist Chinese Party's takeover of China in 1949. The year 1949 displayed by Google was the time when the KMT was relocated to Taiwan and the establishment year of the People's Republic of China (#PRC), but not the ROC.

Taiwan's Apple Daily contacted Google Headquarters in the US. Google replied by saying that they needed to undergo further investigations in order to come arrive at a conclusion for the problem.

The Chinese Embassy Sent a letter to the Indian media, opposing their Introduction and the Blessings on Double Ten Day to Taiwan

October 10, 2020 marks the 109th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China (#ROC; Taiwan).

Indian media expressed their goodwill. Apart from the full-page advertisements for Taiwan’s National Day on the two major newspapers, pay-TV stations produced albums with the Taiwan authorities to introduce Taiwan with the cooperation between India and Taiwan, and the fact of Taiwan donating masks to India preventing and controlling the epidemic.

However, the Chinese Embassy in India sent a letter to Indian media, reminding them to abide by the “One China Principle” and not to send the wrong message to the public. This action drew criticism from Indian journalists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan also criticized China on Twitter for extending its censorship to India.

Questioning China’s indirect threat

An independent journalist Aditya Raj Kaul uploaded a letter sent by the Chinese Embassy in India to various media on his Twitter. The embassy reiterated the One-China Principle in the letter that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and has become an international consensus. All the countries and Indian media should abide by related policies and perspectives and should not violate the principle. “Taiwan should not be considered as a 'country', or described as 'Republic of China', or described Taiwan leader as 'president'" called the media should not send the wrong message to the public. Other than uploading the letter, Kaul also questioned whether this is an indirect threat to Indian media that reported on Taiwan?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan also quoted the post of Kaul on Twitter, indicated that India is the largest democratic country in the world with vibrant and freedom-loving people. Yet, Communist China hoped to enter India as a subcontinent through censorship. Indians in Taiwan only replied, “disappear!”

Pompeo Says Taiwan Has Never Been Part of China, Spokesperson for Taiwan’s President Calls It Undisputed Fact

Speaking about cross-strait issues in a radio interview on 12 November, American time, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said Taiwan is a "model for democracy" and that America’s commitment to Taiwan cuts across party lines, adding that “Taiwan has not been a part of China”. This is a shift from the position taken by the US since it made its three joint communiqués with China in the 1970s and 80s.

Spokesperson of Taiwan’s presidential office, Chang Tun-han, said on the morning of 13 November that he is aware of Pompeo's remarks and that it is an indisputable fact that the Republic of China (ROC) is a sovereign state. He said it has always been Taiwan’s cross-strait and regional policy that the two sides along the Strait should work together to maintain peace and stability in the region on the basis of mutual respect, adding that Taiwan will continue to fulfil its international obligations and contribute to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait and the region.
