9 Months Since the Death of Pro-democracy Student: Police Intercept Reporters and Target Web-based Media
August 8, 2020 marks 9th month since university student Chow Tsz-lok passed away on November 8, 2019. The cause of his fatal fall from Sheung Tak Carpark during police operation remains unknown. An altar was set up at the crossroads of Sheung Tak Estate for citizens to lay candles and flowers in remembrance of Chow.
A large group of police were sighted stationing and patrolling around Sheung Tak carpark as early as at 6pm, urging reporters to leave. At 7pm, a police cordon line was set up to conduct search.
Specifically, reporters of what the police called “traditional media” and “web media” were kept apart for search.

There are three main ways to collect specimen for COVID19 tests, including nose swab, deep throat swab, and deep throat saliva sampling.
Regarding a Chinese expert’s criticism of the deep throat saliva sample testing, a public hospital doctor in Hong Kong pointed out that this was because nose swab and deep throat swab were mainly used in China, and mixed testing will require more workload.
Respiratory Medicine specialist in Hong Kong Dr. Leung Chi-chi explained that the common practice in China was to mix 5 samples, and it was less effective. If a patient is highly contagious and carries more virus, then the test result will still be positive. Yet, if the patient is in an early state of infection, or carries less virus, then the result may come back as negative. Mixed sample testing was usually used in large-scale testing instead of clinical diagnosis to avoid an inaccurate result.
In China, medical staff collect specimen for the testing through a throat swab, whereas the Hong Kong government asks Hong Kong citizens to collect specimen themselves. Doctors in Hong Kong criticised that this practice was even more impoverished than China.

The Treasury of the United States announced the sanction of 7 Hong Kong and 4 Chinese officials, including PRC's Hong Kong Liaison Office Head Luo Huining, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Director Xiao Baolong, Vice Director Zhang Xiaoming, and Office for Safeguarding National Security Director Zheng Yanxiong.
Chinese official Luo stated that the fact that he was sanctioned “proves he did the right thing for the country and Hong Kong.” He also pointed out that he did not own any assets in the US, so the sanction was “a waste of effort”. He added, “Of course, I can send $100 to Mr. Trump so that he can freeze it.”
The Liaison Office issued a statement to "strongly oppose and condemn" the sanction. The spokesperson stated that they were "not scared of any barbaric behaviour" and if the US thought the so-called sanction can make China compromise, they have “forgotten the times, made wrong plans, and wasted their efforts.”
It was also reiterated that the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong aimed to fill the loopholes in the existing laws, however, foreign politicians have been anxious since the implementation. The Office for Safeguarding National Security criticised the US for violating the basic principles of international laws and for sanctioning officers on the ridiculous bases of “limiting the political freedom in Hong Kong”. It was suggested that these US politicians showed their intention of supporting rioters, and they were just like “clowns”.

China sent a mobile cabin hospital support team to Hong Kong, which repeatedly insisted the set-up of a Hong Kong mobile cabin hospital. However, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA) representatives including Chuang Shuk-kwan and Lau Ka-hin denied the statement.
Hong Kong Hospital Authority director Deacon Yeung stated in an interview that the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) will not become a mobile cabin hospital or what China said a "Huoshenshan hospital". Instead, it will just be treated as an isolation facility. Yeung said that the HA is prepared for the third outbreak in March. The most serious patients will be treated in hospitals, while less serious patient will be treated in isolation facilities. The US Consulate issued a statement on Aug 7 that Consulate members had met with pro-democracy figures and these meetings are neither secretive nor mysterious, stating that the accusation that those who met with Consulate representatives are engaging in “collusion” is ludicrous.
Further, the Consulate stated that “These allegations underscore the fact that the National Security Law was never about security, but rather, was intended to silence democracy advocates and threaten those who engage in even the most routine forms of free speech.”
The statement stressed that the US Consulate has “repeatedly raised grave concerns about the effect this ill-defined, vaguely worded, and far-reaching law would have on Hong Kong” since the implementation of the National Security Law. The Consulate urged Beijing to respect Hong Kong’s freedom of speech and human rights, the British Joint Declaration, and Hong Kong’s reputation. It was at last stated that “U.S. policy towards Hong Kong has been consistent for decades. Just as we have repeatedly acknowledged that Hong Kong is part of China, so have we emphasized our support for the One Country, Two Systems framework and the high degree of autonomy promised to Hong Kong by Beijing.”

Legislative Council Member, Ted Hui, said on Facebook that Oliver Ma was charged for obstructing police, and he has contacted a team of lawyers to follow up.

After a while, when Oliver Ma sang “Do You Hear the People Sing”, the other police officers moved forward to surround him and turned off his speaker. A citizen filming the incident asked the police, “What crime did he commit?” when Oliver Ma was in handcuffs.
Previously on July 28, Oliver Ma was arrested on suspicion of criminal intimidation, alleging that he argued with a 65-year-old woman on the street in Central because of noise problems. He was released on bail pending the investigation. He explained the incident on his Facebook, stating that the old woman suddenly snatched away his microphone stand while he was performing, and kicked his guitar case on the ground. Police arrested him on suspicion of criminal intimidation against the old lady, even though they did not any record voice or video evidence of him doing so. He denied having committed any crimes, believing that he was a victim of false accusations.
He suspected that his latest arrest was the police punishing him for his persistence in singing “Glory to Hong Kong”.

// Before the siege at PolyU, there was the violent battle at CUHK. The No. 2 Bridge shall be chronicled into history as the first battlefront for academic freedom.
It was then when I first heard the police shout, "There isn’t enough ammunition, order more to be sent from Wong Tai Sin!", the commander shouted into his intercom.
On the frontline at No.2 Bridge that day, the injured were carried away one by one. Burst eyes, shots to the chest, burnt arms and legs, respiratory problems from breathing in too much mace, and too many more. Yet as the injured retreated one by one, more took their place in the smoke and flames.
On that day, CUHK became a field hospital. Former President of the University Joseph Sung brought Hong Kong's top medical team. They, along with alumni and students, rushed back to defend the school, and as supplies kept coming through, the human chain soon reached from the No.2 Bridge to the School Gate.
On that day, I saw a young protestor go into cardiac arrest after breathing in too much mace. Luckily, he received cardiopulmonary resuscitation and he coughed out most of it, saving his life.
Do not forget what these young people have fought for. Do not forget our history. Chronicle every moment, for the regime is seeking to erase it. //

Hong Kong’s track cyclist Sarah Wai-sze Lee on August 8, 2021, won her second bronze medal in the women’s track cycling sprint event in 2020 Tokyo Olympic, becoming, after her bronze medal in the kirin conpetitionin the 2012 London Olympics. Lee is the first local athlete to win medals in two different games and two separate Olympic Games.
In the bronze medal match in Tokyo, Lee beat Germany’s Emma Hinze 2-0 in a best-of-three match up.
Lee said after the match that her goal is to capture two medals in her last Olympic Games. She has mixed feeling after winning one bronze, "Life is like this: You work hard on one thing, but the outcome is not ideal. At least, when we have done our best, there is no regret."
Lee said she learnt to take good care of herself during the competition, "I always tell myself to cherish myself more, in order to go forward. I realise I can become the one who loves me the most."
