Milk Tea Alliance disapproves of Chinese actress's support towards police brutality

Controversy over the film ignited last year, when its star, Liu Yifei, posted on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Translated, her message reads, “I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now,” followed by, “What a shame for Hong Kong.”

Many voiced their disappointments toward Yifei for standing by the law enforcement and accused her of supporting police brutality and oppression.

In solidarity with people demanding democratic reforms, protesters in Thailand have also backed up their peers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, forming the Milk Tea Alliance. Ahead of Mulan’s release on Disney Plus on Friday, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a Thai student activist, tweeted, “I invite everyone to #boycottMulan #banMulan to make Disney and the Chinese government know that state violence against the people is unacceptable.”

Inner Mongolian Official Falls to Death with Note Citing Pressure in Protecting Native Language, Husband Silenced by Domestic Security Police

33 year-old Inner Mongolian official Surnaa fell to her death from her residence on the early morning of 4 September. The police claimed that the ethnic Mongolian employee of the government of Alxa League had been suffering from depression, but a death note attributed to the deceased circulating on the Internet suggests that her death was related to the Mongolians’ ongoing movement to protect their native tongue.

Protests broke out recently in places including Tongliao City and Urad Middle Banner with Mongolian farmers and herdsmen resisting the authorities’ push for Mandarin as the medium of instruction. Over the past week, there have been reports of people mysteriously falling to their death during the protests. The authorities have blocked the information, leaving the names and the backgrounds of the deceased unknown.

Surnaa was the fourth person to have fallen to death since the demonstrations began. Her husband, Altanbagan, has confirmed the incident. Speaking to Radio Free Asia (RFA), Mongolian scholar and advocate of farmers’ and herdsmen’s rights Kubis confirmed that “a civil servant in Alxa League has committed suicide.” Another Mongolian said that “a Mongolian woman in Alxa League jumped to her death in protest of the government’s abolishment of the Mongolian language as the medium of instruction,” noting that “the details are still being verified.”

Reuters Quotes US Defense Department: SMIC May Be Added to Trade Blacklist

[Reuters' update: SMIC has since issued a statement expressing “shock” at the news and denying ties to the Chinese military.]

Tensions continue as the US moves to crack down on Chinese tech companies with Huawei, ZTE, and Hikvision bearing the brunt of the blow. Citing a US Defense Department spokesperson, Reuters reported on 5 September that the US intends to add Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) (SEHK: 0981.HK), China’s largest chipmaker, to its trade blacklist. SMIC and the Chinese Embassy in the US have not yet responded to the statement.

According to Reuters’ report, the US Defense Department is working with other agencies to determine whether to take action against SMIC without disclosing its motivations. Reuters was told that the Defense Department had written a proposal earlier recommending that the Commerce Department add SMIC to its list of entities. If the action is taken, US companies will be required to obtain a license before exporting goods containing American microchip technology to SMIC.

Washington is evaluating SMIC’s relationship with the Chinese military

SMIC is China’s largest chipmaker. Though being weaker, the company sees Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the industry leader, as its main competitor. With the US announcing sanctions against Huawei, SMIC took an indirect hit being one of the telecom equipment manufacturer’s chip suppliers. Reuters also quoted an official as saying that Washington was evaluating SMIC’s relationship with the Chinese military.

China Relations Sour as Czech Senate President Visits Taiwan, Beijing Buyer Cancels Order for Czech Pianos

With China angered over a recent visit to Taiwan by the president of the Czech senate Miloš Vystrčil and his delegation, a Chinese buyer cancelled a 5.3-million Czech koruna (approxmiately 1.8-million Hong Kong dollar) order with the Czech piano manufacturer Petrof, the Czech News Agency reported.

Commenting on Vystrčil’s visit to Taiwan, the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said earlier that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Those who challenge the “One China” principle, he said, are making themselves enemies of the 1.4 billion Chinese people and are going to pay a heavy price. The Czech foreign ministry summoned the Chinese ambassador for an explanation.

Citing an announcement by Petrof’s CEO Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová, foreign media reported that a buyer from Beijing cancelled a close deal with the piano manufacturer because of Vystrčil’s visit. With rumours of the Chinese government placing sanctions on Czech imports going around, the buyer was worried that he could not afford the fine and decided to cancel his order.

A renowned instrument brand, Petrof makes 35% of its revenue from sales in China. The report quoted the manufacturer as voicing concerns for the impact on its operation in China should the country’s relations with the Czech Republic continue to worsen. It is also unsure as to whether its employees will be given visas to attend the International Instrument Exhibition, which will take place in Shanghai next month.

The University of Southern California Suspended a professor because of speaking "that" in Putonghua, discriminating against African-Americans

(North American News) A Communication Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) used a Chinese vocab "nèige" (meaning "that") with a Putonghua pronunciation, has led to a petition from a group of angry African-American. They said that it sounded like a word with discrimination or defamation to Africans, requesting an apology from the professor and the teaching suspension to have an investigation.

Professor Greg Patton has taught at USC Marshall School of Business for 20 years. During the online teaching of MBA related curriculum last month, Patton used Putonghua as an example, saying "nèige" replaces some meaningless words, like errs and umms, in China. He repeated "nèige" thrice.

Nevertheless, some students thought that the accent of the professor for "nèige" was similar to "nigga", a word that insults Africans. They pointed out that the professor had offended all African students in the class and had affected their mental health. The school said that another speaker will take over the curriculum at this moment, during the investigation period for Patton.
