Briefing: As Congo’s Ebola epidemic draws to a close, coronavirus concerns and relapse risks

//No new confirmed case of Ebola has been recorded since 17 February, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

//“The Ebola epidemic is ending progressively, but systems we have established allow us to address coronavirus,” said Jean-Jacques Muyembe, the doctor leading Congo’s Ebola and COVID-19 responses.

//“The disease is a bit different…but there is a lot in place that should be maintained,” Munsch said. “All the structures that we have in place could be a really huge help to this new outbreak.”

//Muyembe said the country would benefit from Ebola health screening procedures and hand washing stations already in place at airports, border crossings, and on roads between major towns.

//Two new treatments based on Ebola antibodies helped bring down the disease mortality rate and created a pool of survivors, who were hired by responders to convince others with the disease to seek treatment.

//Sporadic attacks on health workers continued, but the epidemic was finally brought under control.

Congo reviewing $6 billion mining deal with Chinese investors -Finance Minister

Democratic Republic of Congo’s government is reviewing its $6 billion “infrastructure-for-minerals” deal with Chinese investors as part of a broader examination of mining contracts, Finance Minister Nicolas Kazadi told Reuters.

President Felix Tshisekedi said in May that some mining contracts could be reviewed because of concerns they are not sufficiently benefiting Congo, which is the world’s largest producer of cobalt and Africa’s leading miner of copper.

His government announced this month it had formed a commission to reassess the reserves and resources at China Molybdenum’s massive Tenke Fungurume copper and cobalt mine in order to “fairly lay claim to (its) rights”.

6 Chinese-funded Companies Involved in Illegal Mining in the Republic of Congo, Beijing ordered to Evacuate

The government of Sud-Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa ordered 9 mining companies to suspend operations earlier, involving 6 Chinese-funded companies. The reason is that those companies have illegally mined and caused environmental pollution. The violated Chinese companies ignored the issues and continued their operations, causing the local citizens to protest in mining areas last month. The police, therefore, used tear gases for dispersing. Beijing government requested the relevant companies to stop operating and leave the place.

Wu Peng, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, indicated that they have already finished the investigation on the incident. He ordered those companies to respect the local government - stop the operation and leave Sud-Kivu as soon as possible. Wu has also stated that those companies will be punished. “We would not allow Chinese companies to violate local laws.” “We support the Democratic Republic of Congo to buffet illegal economic activities”. South China Morning Post described it is very rare for Beijing to stop overseas companies’ operations. At the same time, the local government requested a review of China’s large-scale local project contracts.
