‘You will be put into detention': Former ABC bureau chief tells story of fleeing China for first time

Former ABC's China bureau chief, Matthew Carney, decided to immediately leave China with his family before their visas would expire in less than a week because the authorities had threatened to detain his 14-year old daughter. Carney was berated for any "negative China coverage" as he had reported the mass detentions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

Foreign journalists and their families are under Chinese authorities' surveillance. One way the Chinese authorities try to force foreign journalists to self-censor their work is by threatening them not to renew the 12-month residency visas.

The Heritage Foundation Called for Sanction Against Dajiang after Suspicion on Helping Government with Surveillance on Uyghurs

US-China relations remain tense, and the United States has been working to prevent the American Big Data from leaking to China. Dajiang Innovations (DJI), a leading company in the sales and development of drones, was accused of the possibility of sending data to China and working with Beijing in monitoring Uyghurs in Xinjiang, sparking security concerns. Some US think tanks have been suggesting the US government to impose sanctions against DJI.

DJI accounted for 77% of the drone market in the US. Most of the Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Division of Fire Prevention and Control’s drones are, for instance, products of DJI because of their relatively low prices. Ben Miller, who leads the Center of Excellence within the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, commented that DJI swiftly got ahead of other companies and developed new products faster because the company received subsidies from the Chinese Government. Because of security concerns, however, the center would opt for products produced by American companies from now on.

The US Department of Defense has already banned US government departments from using and buying drones from DJI. Skydio is among the five American drone companies that have been approved, and the company is confident that it would surpass Chinese companies in market share in the future.

EU said She was Being Tortured, and Pompeo said the Case Reflects CCP Fears of Truthtellers

Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan traveled to Wuhan to make the news coverage regarding the Wuhan Virus pandemic. She was accused of picking quarrels and provoking trouble, putting her in prison for four years. The European Union (EU) said in a statement yesterday calling for an immediate release of Zhang and cited from credible sources that she had been tortured during detention. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also issued a statement condemning China strongly for its false prosecution and conviction of Zhang, which reflected the CCP's fears of citizens who speak the truth.

The EU called for the immediate release of Zhang in a statement yesterday (29th). They also disclosed according to reliable sources, Zhang had been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during her detention, resulting in the severe deterioration of her health condition. They added that Zhang must receive adequate medical assistance. "The increasing restrictions on freedom of speech, access to information, intimidation and surveillance of journalists, as well as detentions, trials, and sentencing of human rights defenders, lawyers, and intellectuals in China will continue to be a major concern."

China surveillance expands to Twitter and Facebook – Chinese students’ family arrested after students posted news against China in overseas

//The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) controls all internet traffic and bans access to foreign websites. Chinese netizens can only access banned sites via Virtual Private Network (VPN) illegally.

//Chinese people post on overseas platforms without using their true names but they were still monitored and detected by CCP watchdogs.

//The CCP police (Public Security Bureau) also records the frequency of posts and how many had read the posts for every target they identified and investigated.

//While posing on social media deterrence the China people, CCP had already expanded the monitoring around the world. A China student surnamed LOU, who studied in the United States in 2018 and satirized CCP General Secretary XI Jinping on Twitter, was arrested and convicted for “picking and provoking trouble” with 6 months imprisonment when he returned to China in 2019. This incident was deeply concerned by certain American Senators.

//It is extremely scary and controversial – those students post on Twitter without using their real name, how can CCP able to trace them and get to their family?

Smile for the camera: the dark side of China's emotion-recognition tech

Ordinary people in China aren’t happy with emotion-recognition camera, but they have no choice. They have to live with it if the police say there have to be cameras in a community.

Emotion-recognition technologies in which facial expressions of anger, sadness, happiness and boredom, as well as other biometric data are tracked are supposedly able to infer a person’s feelings based on traits such as facial muscle movements, vocal tone, body movements and other biometric signals.

Similar to facial recognition, it involves the mass collection of sensitive personal data to track, monitor and profile people and uses machine learning to analyse expressions and other clues.

Critics say the technology is based on a pseudo-science of stereotypes, and an increasing number of researchers, lawyers and rights activists believe it has serious implications for human rights, privacy and freedom of expression.

As China Tracked Muslims, Alibaba Showed Customers How They Could, Too

As the Chinese government tracked and persecuted members of predominantly Muslim minority groups, the technology giant Alibaba taught its corporate customers how they could play a part.

Alibaba’s website for its cloud computing business showed how clients could use its software to detect the faces of Uighurs and other ethnic minorities within images and videos. The feature was built into Alibaba software that helps web platforms monitor digital content for material related to terrorism, pornography and other red-flag categories, the website said.

It could not be determined whether or how Alibaba’s clients had used the minority detection tool. But the potential for troubling use is high.

#Facebook: #ChineseHackers Attempt to Breach #Uyghurs Communication Devices for #Surveillance

Facebook reported that groups of Chinese hackers tried to set up fake accounts on Facebook in order to get in contact with Uyghurs overseas. After gaining their trust, they send their victims malicious links disguised as Uyghur news sites or online stores, in an attempt to install spyware on their phones for surveillance.

The report on the hacking activities was published on March 24, 2021 in which Facebook did not directly link the incident to the Chinese government, but said that the activity "had the hallmarks of a well-resourced and persistent operation". The hacking groups involved, known in the cybersecurity industry as Earth Empusa and Evil Eye, have also been involved in other surveillance activities in the past.

The hackers mainly target Uyghur human rights activists, journalists, and dissidents from Xinjiang. Most of them currently live in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States, Syria, Australia and Canada.
