Japan’s ruling party to ban Tiktok and other Chinese apps

(28 Jul) The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reports that a group of lawmakers from Japan's ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), are proposing restrictions on Chinese apps like the video-sharing platform TikTok due to data security concerns.

The report stated that the LDP's group on regulatory policy, led by tax panel chief Akira Amari, would hold a meeting today to discuss restrictions on Chinese apps. There have also been reports of information leaks from banking systems that use Chinese-developed artificial intelligence to scrutinize funds etc. The group will urge the government to adopt its recommendations to ensure Japan's security from such threats.

Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party Urges Government to Impose Restrictions on TikTok and Other Chinese Apps

Nikkei Asian Review reported that Japan's ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will urge the government to impose restrictions on apps developed in China, such as TikTok (Douyin’s international version), to maintain close cooperation with the US on security affairs.

According to the report, LDP members discussed with experts on the matter on 28 July and their proposal could be ready next month. Ex-cabinet member Akira Amari, who was in the discussion, said that if the government and corporations did not have a clear policy on security issues pertaining to sensitive information, they might be excluded from research, talent exchange programs and other schemes in the US and Europe."

TikTok currently has more than 10 million users in Japan, most of which are youngsters. The LDP planned to call on the government to impose restrictions on apps developed in China, design security review standards to safeguard technical and information security, and refrain from publicising the patent applications of military technologies. Under current practice, the Japanese government publishes the information of a patent application approximately a year and a half after receiving the application, and the information can be viewed by people outside of Japan.

According to the report, the LDP worried that while US-China relations continued to deteriorate, if Japan did not have a clear policy on technical, information and intelligence security, it might lag behind its western partners. The LDP also hoped to enhance cooperation between Japan and the international intelligence alliance the Five Eyes (The Five Eyes comprises of the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada).
