Pro-democracy candidates asked to explain whether they would pursue seeking foreign governments to impose sanctions on Hong Kong
Electoral officer issued letter on Saturday (July 25) to at least 9 pro-democracy candidates of LegCo election, seeking explanation of their political stance and whether they would continue urging the US and other foreign governments to impose sanctions on Hong Kong. Besides, the candidates were also asked to explain whether they would veto government bills and budgets, and oppose the National Security Law in principle as well as their stance on Hong Kong independence.
They were asked to respond within 24 hours on Sunday (July 26) by noon or in the afternoon.
The Civic Party responded in the afternoon on the same day, reprimanded that it is unreasonable for Electoral officer to request candidates to respond in short notice, stating also that it is oppressive and unacceptable. Chairman of the Party, Alan Leong Kah-kit further pointed out that the Electoral Officer has become a political tool and has seriously violated the "International Covenant on Human Rights" by intervening an election.

Many pro-democracy legislators, including members of the Civic Party and Localist factions, received letters from the Returning Officer regarding their requests for foreign sanctions on Hong Kong, if they would veto the budget, the five demands, and whether they uphold the Basic Law and allegiance to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. These factors will decide the validity of the nominations.
Many candidates for the Civic Party, including Alvin Yeung , Tat Cheng , Kwok Ka-ki and Dennis Kwok Wing-hang of the Legal Sector, have received letters from the Returning Officer.
It was mentioned that the Civic Party visited the United States and proposed for the United States to pass the "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act" as soon as possible. The letters that were sent questioned if they still intend to continue to request of the United States to implement sanctions on Hong Kong, and for other countries to pass similar bills.
It was also mentioned that the Civic Party publicly stated in March and June that the Chief Executive must implement the five major demands in the policy address, otherwise it will veto all government bills, judge appointments, and budget proposals. The Returning Officer asked them to explain how the above-mentioned position complies with the nomination form which includes clauses for supporting the Basic Law and the substantive requirements of loyalty to the SAR.
In addition, many individual who enrolled in the election and had also participated in tge protests received enquiries. They included New Territories East Ventus Lau Wing-hong and Gwyneth Ho Kwai-lam. In addition to asking about the use of parliamentary veto to respond to the five major demands, they also quoted the statement of the protest press conference to indicate that they have no hesitation in opposing the Hong Kong National Security Law. It shows that they oppose in principle the National People’s Congress Standing Committee’s inclusion of the “Hong Kong National Security Law” in Annex III of the “Basic Law” and they oppose the SAR’s constitutional responsibility to maintain national security.
The Returning Officer reiterated that Ventus Lau Wing-hong publicly supported Hong Kong independence four years ago. In June this year, he expressed his desire to establish an ideal country on social platforms. Lau was questioned whether he would continue to advocate and promote Hong Kong independence.

The police officer who arrested the defendant that night, Liu Zhenliang, confessed that when the defendant was escorted back to the police station, two police officers pressed the defendant's back hard to protect the defendant from being hit by debris. Liu also said that during the 11-minute period when the defendant was searched and arrested alone in the police station room, he did not pay attention to the defendant's appearance or whether he was injured because he was focused entirely on the search.

Authorities Alleged Political Retaliation on Pro-democracy District Councilor
Kwok Chi-Chung, a
pro-democracy district councilor of the Eastern District, shared a post in his Facebook citing the message from the government's Eastern District Office. According to the authorities, if a councilor office has been used for the strike referendum and the pro-democracy primary election, the Home Affairs Department won't process its operating expenses for a month, including rental, staff salary, the bills for water, electricity, internet and internet access, etc.
Kwok criticized the decision, calling it ridiculous. He believed that organizing the strike referendum and the primary election could let civilians in different districts express their opinions as a result of influencing the welfare of people in this district. That was entirely in accord with the responsibility of the district council. Kwok expressed strong discontent that the authorites had bundled the expense of election and non-election days and pointed out that such unreasonable deduction of operating expenses by the authority constitutes administrative suppression.

Singaporean Pleads Guilty at U.S. Court to Collecting Intelligence for China
A Singaporean man named Jun Wei Yeo, also known as Dickson Yeo, entered a plea of guilty in a U.S. Federal Court to acting as an illegal agent of Chinese intelligence.
In a press release on July 24th, the U.S. Department of Justice stated that Yeo pleaded guilty to working for the Chinese government between 2015 and 2019, utilising his network in the U.S. to set up a false consulting firm and collect sensitive information for the Chinese government.
The statement wrote that Yeo had admitted to establishing a fake consulting company that disguised itself as a government and public relations firm on career networking sites to recruit individuals with ties to the U.S. military and government agencies. These individuals often had access to classified information on technology and policies that would help China advance its own interests. There was also evidence that Yeo recruited other potential targets working in the U.S. to support Chinese intelligence operations.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Yeo himself was recruited by Chinese intelligence agency when he was an employee at National University of Singapore.

Police refused to disclose what information the arrested person actually released on those platforms and only disclosed that it is related to the government's cash distribution plan, anti-epidemic measures, and other social issues.
The Superintendent of the Technology Crime Division of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, Wilson Tam, said that recently false information was widely reposted on the internet, convincing the public to believe. At the same time, police also received reports. The man involved was arrested this morning and a smartphone was seized. It is possible for more people to be arrested. As to whether the operation had monetary gains or caused losses, it is still under investigation.
Wilson Tam said that citizens should not trust online rumors, "Many people saying the same thing doesn’t mean it’s true." He urged citizens to pay attention to official government channels and police messages posted on social platforms if they have doubts about online information. "To receive the correct information," he said.

People’s Daily Online, an official media outlet of the CCP, had accused HSBC of framing Huawei’s deputy chairwoman Meng Wanzhou. In an article published on July 24th, the state media outlet claimed that the bank took part in entrapping Meng in order to evade US charges of money laundering.
HSBC issued a statement on Weibo on July 25th, saying that it bears no malice towards Huawei and had not framed the company. The material disclosed to the US Department of Justice, the statement said, was provided upon formal requests. It added that all HSBC had provided was factual information and that it had never entrapped Huawei.
