Agnes Chow: Hong Kong’s 'real Mulan' fighting for democracy

In the article, Agnes Chow describes the years of her political activism. Alongside fellow students, Joshua Wong and Nathan Law, occupied parts of the city for 79 days which was called the Umbrella Movement later. Two years later, she co-founded the pro-democracy lobby group Demosisto, which was disbanded on the day the National Security Law forced upon Hong Kong.

Speaking of her arrest on August 10, she said "[Police officers] raided my home for two hours. My mother was there. I was so scared and asked myself, 'Is this the last time I will see my home?” Since then, she has “developed a phobia of doorbells and knocking."

Her fans call her the “real Mulan” and “Goddess of Democracy”, and this year was featured in BBC’s 100 Women List, which names 100 inspirational women around the world every year.

Editor’s note: On December 2, 2020, Agnes Chow was sentenced to 10 months in prison for her participation and incitation of the Wan Chai Hong Kong Police Headquarters occupation on June 21, 2019.

New Zealand joins Australia in denouncing China's tweet

New Zealand has joined Australia in denouncing a graphic tweet posted by a Chinese official that shows a fake image of a grinning Australian soldier holding a bloodied knife to a child's throat.

Ardern's criticism was more muted than Australia's. She faced an awkward choice of how far to get involved in a conflict between New Zealand's closest ally, Australia, and its biggest trading partner, China

In a dilemma, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern still said on December 1 ( Tuesday) that New Zealand has voiced its concerns directly with Chinese authorities.

CNN Obtained a Confidential Documents Disclosing China's Early Mishandling on COVID-19

One year after the first COVID-19 case in Hubei, CNN published an exclusive report on the receipt of 117 pages of a confidential internal document today, from an anonymous source in Hubei. The report shows that China underestimated and concealed the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, and sent misleading information to the public during the early stages of the pandemic.

The report shows that as early as February 10, Hubei province had 5,918 new cases including clinical diagnoses, more than twice the number of confirmed cases announced publicly in China on that day. Hubai categorised these almost 6,000 reported cases into 2345 confirmed cases, 1772 clinically diagnosed cases and 1,796 suspected cases. However, the province did not disclose the number of clinically diagnosed cases by the doctors.

"We Will Not Be Bullied”, MPs from 19 Countries Initiated Buying Australian Wine Against China's Hegemony.

China's Ministry of Commerce has imposed a "temporary anti-dumping duties" on Australian wine imports, requiring importers to pay a "guarantee deposit" to the Chinese Customs when importing Australian wine "in containers holding 2 litres or less" since last week. The deposit is determined by the authorities, based on the extent of dumping by each company, and is calculated on an ad valorem basis from 107.1% to 212.1% duty paid price as determined by Customs. The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a group of over 200 parliamentarians from 19 countries, has called for a buy Australian wine campaign as to demonstrate opposition to Chinese hegemony.

IPAC has released a clip of members of parliament from Japan, Italy, Germany, the United States and New Zealand urging people to buy Australian wine, with Chinese and English subtitles. IPAC members include some of the biggest winemakers in the world, producing wines such as Italian red wine, whisky and Japanese sake, but Ted Yoho, the Republican Chief member of the Asia-Pacific Group on the Foreign Affairs Committee of US House of Representatives, says in the film, “We are drinking something a little bit different”, and urges people to buy Australian wine "because our friends need our help".

“We are asking you all to join us in standing against Xi Jinping's authoritarian bullying," says Slovakian's MP Miriam Lexmann. With a glass of Penfolds, Swedish Christian Democrat MP Elisabet Lann said, “By drinking a bottle or two of Australian wine, and letting the Chinese Communist Party know, that we will not be bullied.”

A large crowd gathered outside Cable TV Tower at Hoi Shing Road, Tsuen Wan, a rare scene. All pointing their cameras at the bright red Cable TV logo, a line of photo journalists would charge forward and press the shutters whenever there was any hint of activity inside.

Among the photos, there is one showing news reader Kenix Lau Tsz-Fung leaving with a suitcase which carried her outfits on cast. Sports journalist Chan Hon-Wai held a basketball to his chest. Veteran journalist Alex Sin Ching-Fung carried a carton with a sticker “3 HK” which became a talking point of the netizens.

US Criticises China’s Violation of North Korea Sanctions, Offers USD 5M for Information Providers

The US State Department criticised China on Tuesday (Nov 24) for publicly violating the international community’s sanction regime on North Korea and announced that Washington will offer a reward of USD 5 million (HKD 39 million) to any persons who provide information on individuals in violation of the sanctions on North Korea.

The US Deputy Assistant Secretary for North Korea Alex Wong accused China during a video speech at an event hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He said that China was “seeking to undo” the UN’s sanctions on North Korea, in attempting to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. He criticised that a premature withdrawing of the sanction may weaken the bargaining power in the negotiations for denuclearisation.

Wong also said that there were at least 20 thousand North Korean labourers within the Chinese borders, and that some Chinese corporations were engaged with more than 20 North Koreans connected to weapons of mass destructions or banks in North Korea.

He added that in the past year, the US discovered that North Korean ships violated the bans for at least 555 times in the transportation of sanctioned products, including coal, to China, “On none of these occasions... did the Chinese authorities act to stop these illicit imports.” The US will offer USD 5 million rewards to individuals who could provide information on North Korea’s sanction evasions.
