More cases reveal Hong Kong Police abusing powers over innocent pro-democracy supporters

On August 31, 2020 pro-democracy supporters gathered in remembrance of the #PrinceEdwardAttack, where Hong Kong riot police assaulted peaceful civilians in Prince Edward subway station.

On that evening, police officer made multiple attempts to disperse the crowd. Rounds of pepper-spray were deployed and a woman who was 7-8 months’ pregnant was allegedly neck-locked and dragged by a police office to the ground.

The woman was reportedly injured and sent to the hospital. Her husband, who was also present, was subdued and arrested by the police, accused of disorderly conduct at a public place.

Six months later, on February 25, 2021, Yu Tak-po, vice-chairman of Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok District Council wrote on his Facebook that the police has withdrawn the case and dropped charges.

MTR Ad Campaign Alludes to 8.31
Local Satire Artist Makes Parody Image on Attack Anniversary

Last week, Hong Kong Science Museum ran an ad campaign in MTR stations promoting its “MTR x Dinosaur Adventure Art Competition 2022”, which complements the Hong Kong Science Museum’s “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big 8 – Dinosaur Revelation” dinosaur exhibition, including actors in dinosaur costumes running around inside train stations.

Many netizens left comments on MTR's Facebook post alluding to the #831PrinceEdward attack, in which the Police’s Special Tactical Contingent - often nicknamed "Raptors" - flooded into Prince Edward station and attacked passengers indiscriminately, leaving many bloodied and traumatized.

Today, satire artist SurrealHK published this edited image titled "Dinosaurs seen in MTR?! Inspired by #DinosaurAtMTR". No comments have been made regarding today's date, which happens to coincide with the 3rd year anniversary of the #831PrinceEdward attack, leaving much to the reader's interpretation.

8.31

Three years.

After that, another three years. Then three more years ...
Ten years?
We won't forget even after a hundred years.

Pass it on to the next generation.

Persist, Even in Absurd and Dark Times: Citizens Commemorate 3 Years Since 8.31 Attack

Today marked the third year of the 8.31 #PrinceEdwardAttack. People used various methods for the remembrance of the day.  One person held a "Goddess of Democracy"-like model to commemorate outside Prince Edward MTR Station, reaffirming his belief in freedom and conscience: "Shouldn't we stand firm even in a dark era?"

Since the afternoon, numerous police officers had been patrolling at every entrance of Prince Edward Station. But this did not stop citizens from coming: some stood in silence with a white flower; another one held a yellow umbrella with the words "Add Oil, HKers!"; others wore black clothes with slogans "Have you forgotten, or you are afraid to recall?" or "Civil disobedience".

Meanwhile, police conducted stop-and-search on passing pedestrians who wore black shirts or black face masks, or who held white flowers.

A man interviewed by In-Media stated that even though there was a risk of getting arrested, he still needed to do something on these sensitive dates.

"We're living in absurd and dark times," he said, "Does that mean we shouldn't persist [with our beliefs]? I disagree!"  #Hongkongers will never forget 8.31, he added.
