A HK School Ignores a Student’s Request to Repeat a School Year During Social Movement

A photograph went viral on social media, in which it showed a student in the uniform of the Kei Heep Secondary School, went down on his knees in the rain in front of the school gate. He held an ipad and its screen read: “the school is completely flouting students' needs and depriving students' opportunity to learn”. He pleaded for his school's attention for over an hour.

The Form 6 student, surnamed Chan, said he was injured and suffered depression since last year. Impacted by the year-long social movement, he has missed many classes and was concerned about his ability of catching up with the progress of DSE examination in a few months.

He expressed that he has been seeking the school’s permission to repeat a year in school since May, but the school stalled, until recently, rejected his request.

Chan said he was supposed to meet with the school principal at 10am that morning, but the meeting was cancelled last minute for reasons unknown, leaving him no option but to kneel in front of school gate in a bid to discuss with school representative face-to-face.

He went on saying that despite his effort, the school continued to ignore him. Only when it started to rain, and onlookers' concern aroused, teachers then came to him; however, some teachers taunted him: “enough acting!” , “Go inside!" , "Nobody cares!”

Chan had waited on his knees outside the school gate for around an hour until a district councilor came to mediate.

Responding to Apple Daily’s inquiry, the school’s counselling teacher denied that teachers taunted Chan as described.

Japanese Hardcore Punk Band FORWARD Dedicates Song ‘ACAB’ to Hongkongers

Japanese hardcore punk band FORWARD released a music video for their song "ACAB", which stands for "All Cops Are Bastards". They included large amount of scenes of police brutality in Hong Kong pro-democracy protests.

Featuriing members of legendary Japanese 80’s hardcore band Deathside, the band dedicated this song to Hongkongers in pursuit of freedom and democracy.

In an interview with Unite Asia on September 18, 2020, the band said,

“It was very encouraging to see Hong Kong people stand up and fight for freedom in Hong Kong. Though we in Japan might not be in the same boat as Hong Kong, we felt it very much in our hearts. Police violence is absurd and ridiculous. With the ferocity of the assault on victims every day, we felt sorry for not being able to do anything. We are also extremely upset and saddened at the arrest of Miss Agnes Chow in August, and we became more enthusiastic about the people of Hong Kong. So we thought maybe the least we can do for the people of Hong Kong is something through our music.

We dedicate this song to the people who fight against brutality, and people who believe in humanity. There must be something that can be done and impact change by connecting with humanity wholeheartedly.

We are always with you.

香港加油!”

The use of the acronym A.C.A.B can be traced as early as to 1920. In the 1980s, the British punk band The 4-skins popularized the term in their song of the same name.

LGBT+ organizations: Hong Kong Court Only Willing to Consider Same-sex Marriage Rights in Split Scenario and in Judicial Review

The High Court in Hong Kong issued a verdict where the denial of inheritance rights of spouses in a homosexual marriage were ruled unconstitutional on Sept 18, 2020.

Judge Anderson Chow Ka-ming stated that the regulations discriminate between heterosexual couples and same-sex couples and lack a reasonable explanation, which constitutes as illegal discrimination.

The Attorney General claimed that local marriage law grants heterosexual couples a special status, and the members of heterosexual couples must bear the legal responsibility to support their spouse, so they cannot be treated the same as same-sex couples.

Judge Chow disagreed with the claim, stating that the original intention of the law is to prevent the deceased from evading the responsibility of supporting others. These include those who the deceased has to take care of in terms of legal responsibilities and moral responsibilities, such as their parents and brothers and sisters.

Chow stated that the Attorney General's view is wrong and reflects that the law treats opposite-sex couples and same-sex couples differently.

However, the judicial review filed by Jimmy Sham, vice convener of the Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF) was shot down by Judge Chow on the same day.

Sham challenged previous ruling of the court, arguing that the refusal to recognise overseas same-sex marriages is in violation of the Basic Law.

Some LGBT+ organizations believe that Sham's lost case is extremely unfair and ironic, criticising that same-sex couples could only submit judicial review on various marital rights one at a time, that "you could only win if you cut the case." They asked, "Is it impossible to enjoy these rights without judicial reviews?"

Leading Trade Unions Confederation in Hong Kong disbands after leaders received death threats

On September 19, 2021, the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#CTU) announced disbandment.

Leaders of the group said a special general meeting is scheduled on October 3, 2021 to vote the decision through.

Chairman of the Confederation, #WongDikYuen, told press in a briefing that members of the group, one after another, have been receiving life-threatening messages, that if the Confederation continues its operation, their personal safety might be in risk.

Wong declined to divulge details of these messages nor sources. Chocked in emotions, he apologised to Hong Kong people, "Apologies, Hongkongers. #CTU can not carry on."

In the briefing, Wong also denied allegation of foreign collusion saying that it is a standing practice for the Conferation to stay in close connection with overseas organisations.

Vice-chairman, #LeoTang Kin-wah said members will showcase achievements of the Conferation in an exhibition planned to commemorate the group's 30th anniversary later this year.

In closing, Tang called for Hongkongers to "#AddOil".
