MTR Admits Staff as Suspected Case of Wuhan Pneumonia after Disclosed by "MTR Secrets"; Government: No information on hand

According to a "whistleblower" Facebook page "MTR Secrets" on February 23, a station manager working at Mong Kok East Station showed symptoms like fever and has been on leave since February 21. His father was a confirmed patient of Wuhan pneumonia. This is the reason why Mong Kok East Station was disinfected with bleach earlier.

After the post was released, MTR confirmed in the evening that the family of a staff member of Mong Kok East Station was diagnosed with Wuhan pneumonia, and the staff member was undergoing compulsory quarantine with his family.

Despite this, the Director of the Infectious Diseases of the Hong Kong government's Center for Health Protection, said in a press conference on February 23 that she did not have the information for the time being: "it seems that there is no such case on hand."

Veteran Pro-democracy Figures Arrested for Alleged Unlawful Assembly to Suppress Freedom of Expression

On the eve of the 6th mensiversary of 831 incident, pro-democracy figures Jimmy Lai, Lee Cheuk-yan and Yeung Sum were arrested this morning (February 28) for alleged unlawful assembly on August 31 last year. Lai was also charged with intimidation over an alleged incident in 2017, involving a journalist from a rival publication.

Police gave a short briefing to the media, stating that the trio was due to appear in court on May 5. Responded to a media inquiry, police insisted that the arrest was made "after completing the investigation" and "there were no political considerations".

Lai was later seen emerging from Kowloon City Police Station but left without speaking to waiting reporters. It was said that he is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon for a hearing.

Lee addressed the media after he left Cheung Sha Wan Police Station, saying he had expected to be arrested, but such action by the police will not stop people from demonstrating to fight for democracy.

Lawmaker Lam Cheuk Ting accused the government of abusing its power and exploiting the right of expression of Hong Kong people.

Pro-Democracy Legislator accuses MTR of passing the buck in derailment incident

When MTR East Rail train derailed in September 2019, Chan Fan, Secretary for Transport and Housing immediately put the blame on protesters without any proof.

The investigation report released on Monday, March 2, confirmed that the derailment was caused by screw failure as the maintenance crew was not aware of the stiffness between the old and new sleepers.

Pro-democracy legislator Jeremy Tam said on Facebook, it was obvious that the MTR corporation wanted to blame the frontline maintenance staff. He pointed out that the "new sleeper" has been used for 10 years, so it was logical to ask: why was there not a similar incident in the past? Did MTR ever issue maintenance guidelines in this regard?

Tam said that this incident was the biggest derailment in Hong Kong history and the investigation report showed management of MTR denied responsibility, palming off on the frontline.

Government Refuses to Reveal the Building Plans of Police Sport and Recreation Club and Police Officer Club to the Public

The Public Works Subcommittee of the Legislative Council scrutinised the significant cost overruns in the Shatin to Central Link and South Island Line of MTR.

Pro-democracy lawmakers requested the government to publish the building plans of Police Sport and Recreation Club (PSRC) and Police Officer Club (POC) to the public. The government refused by citing the consideration of security and the opinion from the Hong Kong Police Force.

The pro-demorcracy camp were dissatisfied with the government's rejection to publish the construction plan.

Chan Pai-Ming Jimmy, Director of Highways, said "There should be some considerations of security while having official events and International meetings."

Pro-democracy lawmaker Chan Chi-Chuen Raymond responded, "You provided the building plans of Hong Kong Police headquarters when you applied for the funding proposal in relation to its construction, right?"

Another pro-democracy lawnaker Wu Chi-Wai added, "This is club house for the police, it should not contains any security concerns like Police stations and buildings of the HKPF. That means that you are not carrying out normal operations since you received those documents provided by the HKPF. In other words, you are an idiot!"

Chan Fan Frank, Secretary for Transport and Housing, replied "I wish that Mr Wu Chi Wai could take back his words just now."

A number of council members doubted the reason why the cost of renovation of the POC increased from 300 million to 600 million, which includes the construction of unnecessary facilities, pro-democracy Cheng Chung Tai said "these 4 swimsuit dryers are going to cost us 60 thousand dollars."

Tam Man-Ho Jeremy, a pro-democracy lawmaker of the Civic Party then proposed an adjournment of the discussion which has yet to be resumed.

Whistle-blower on Hong Kong MTR construction scandal launches legal bid to overturn inquiry’s findings

//A whistle-blower at the centre of a construction scandal involving Hong Kong’s costliest rail link is suing the government-appointed commission of inquiry in a legal bid to overturn its finding that the project was safe to go live.

//In a writ filed on Thursday for a judicial review, subcontractor China Technology sought a court order to quash the interim and final reports of the commission chaired by former judge Michael Hartmann on the expanded Hung Hom station of the HK$90.7 billion (US$11.7 billion) Sha Tin-Central rail link.

//“The commission is fully satisfied that, with suitable measures in place, the station box structure will be safe and also fit for purpose,” the report said.

//In launching the legal challenge, Jason Poon Chuk-hung, managing director of China Technology, who blew the whistle on allegations of defective work over the project in May 2018, argued the commission did not have the capacity to judge the project’s safety.

//The commission, set up in July 2018, had looked into allegations of shoddy work at the Hung Hom station site, a missing tranche of vital safety documents relating to the project and other construction issues.

//While confirming the staff of subcontractor Fang Sheung Construction had cut the rebar, the report said “it was not extensive” and amounted to 2 to 3 per cent of the amount used.

//It also concluded cutting the rebar was not “condoned” by either main contractor Leighton Contractors (Asia) or rail operator MTR Corporation, and that there was no evidence the workers were authorised or encouraged by their employer.

//The writ argued that without any supporting evidence, the commission jumped to the conclusion that it was Fang Sheung workers who cut the rebar and that both Leighton and MTR Corp had no knowledge of the act.

//The Sha Tin-Central link project has been plagued by repeated delays and cost overruns.

District Councilors Condemn #MTR staff for inflicting violence on young man "like the police"

In April 2021, in Hong Kong a young man with a mental illness record became agitated when he was intercepted by the MTR ticket inspection unit while exiting Heng Fa Chuen Station.

During the incident, he was physically subdued to the ground by the subway company staff, one of then even violently knelt on the man’s neck.

A number of Yau Tsim Mong District Council members questioned the MTR at a meeting of the Traffic and Transport Committee. They comdemned the MTR Ticket Inspection Unit for abusing its power, and demanded that the MTR to amend the MTR By-laws to stop allowing staff to use force.

District Councillor Owan Li questioned whether the MTR staff had overstepped their authority, and whether they were "enforcing the law for the police?” He criticized the staff kneeling on the victim’s neck for being "a bully".

The MTR representative described the incident as "looking unsatisfactory" and said the police were investigating the incident and were not in a position to comment, adding that they would only report the suggestion.
