Teen Acquitted of Assualting Police Officer, Magistrate Doubts police officer's honesty and reliability

During one of the anti-ELAB protest activities on 3 August 2019, a male university student studying in England was charged for assaulting a police officer by hitting him with his head in a police car. Magistrate ruled on Monday (June 1) that the young protester was not guilty, while accusing the police officer being a dishonest and unreliable witness.

The Magistrate pointed out in his ruling that the witness statement provided by police officer was self-contradictory, and the prosecution could not explain the serious injuries on the defendant’s body and face, including fractured nose bones, which did not appear before the student got on the police car.

Police denies access to information despite of Ombudsman Commission’s urge for open disclosure

Journalists of Citizen News asked the police in June last year to provide the titles of all chapters of the Police General Orders, citing the Code on Access to Information. However, the police refused to disclose the titles of each chapter on the grounds of impairing investigation, arrest, prosecution and maintaining public order.

In August 2019, the reporter lodged a complaint to the Ombudsman Commission. The Commission replied on May 13, nearly nine months after, and ruled the complaint case substantiated. The Commission noted that the title of the Police General Act only provided a general account of the subject matter of the relevant chapter and did not contain any specific content and would not lead to the situation described by the Police. The Police Force's statement was "far-fetched" and the Commission recommended the Police Force to reconsider the request for information from journalists in accordance with the Code.

However, the Police replied on May 27 that they were reviewing the Report by the Ombudsman Commission, without mentioning the expected completion time.

Blossom Everywhere: Organiser of June 4 Vigil Calls on Citizens to Carry-on “Candle-lit” Tradition

Locking down a venue cannot lock down the hearts of Hong Kong citizens. Under the pretext of “Social distance and gathering ban”, HK Government banned, for the first-time in 31 years, the Victoria Park 64 vigil held annually in remembrance of the victims of Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989.

The Hong Kong Alliance, in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China called on the public to uphold the “candle-lit” tradition, letting the flame of remembrance blossom everywhere in Hong Kong so that the next generation will carry on seeking vindication of the movement.

The Hong Kong Catholic Community Federation of Support for the Patriotic and Democratic Movement of China (HKPF) also decided for the first time to hold a Mass in 7 churches in Hong Kong to pay tribute to the victims of June 4 Massacre and to pray for the people fighting for democracy.

Asked whether members would be afraid to attend the Mass, concerning introduction of the National Security Law, Chan Lok-shun recognised that some might be worried about political repression, but he also believes that many would hold on to the values they believe. Chan emphasised that the Church always pray for political stability, world peace and human rights, and he hoped to carry out “as much as they can.”

Police Officers Breaks Solemn Atmosphere, Yells Through Loudhailer

While citizens were closing their eyes, putting their hands together and taking a quiet moment to pray, police officers yelled through loudhailers, warning them that they were breaching the 8-person per gathering ban, without showing even the slightest respect to a solemn atmosphere.

Citizens Sing with Detainees in Commemoration of 8964

Although protesters of anti-ELAB movement being detained at the Lai Chi Kok Detention Center were banned from holding a mass ceremony to pay tribute to the victims of Tienanmen Massacre, they vowed to pray for the deceased and sing the “Flower of Freedom” in their prison cells this evening.

In supporting of the detainees' actions, citizens gathered right outside of the detention center to sing with the detainees.

Hostile Banners Seen outside Churches in Hong Kong, Smearing June 4 Memorial Masses and Warning of National Security Breach

Tomorrow, June 4, 2021, marks 32 years after June 4th Tiananmen Massacre, a brutal crackdown on pro-democracy civilians by the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing, in 1989.

In Hong Kong, the annual candlelight vig has been banned by the police. Despite that, the Justice and Peace Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese will continue to organize a Mass outside their seven churches in the evening.

However, on the morning of June 3, 2021, some hostile banners with words "Cult invades religion" were placed outside the churches, smearing the mass as a potential breach of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Porson Chan, project officer of the Commission, responded that they had no intention to correlate the false accusations on the banner to the June 4 Mass, emphasizing that the Mass is a legal religious activity protected by Basic Law. Thus the event would be held as scheduled.
