Baptist University Suspended Lecturer for His Role in Umbella Movement

"Social welfare sector lawmaker Shiu Ka-chun was relieved from his teaching duties at Baptist University on Friday, after the institution launched disciplinary procedures against him over his conviction last April for his role in the 2014 Occupy movement.

Shiu – a lecturer at the University’s Department of Social Work – told reporters he was summoned to an urgent meeting with senior university figures on Friday afternoon, where they handed him a letter formally informing him that he would not be resuming his teaching duties until an internal inquiry panel concludes its investigation.

Shiu was released in October after serving five months of a prison sentence, imposed after he was found guilty of incitement to commit public nuisance, and incitement to incite public nuisance.

The university confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been launched, and the inquiry panel has determined that the subject should not resume teaching duties for now.

However, it stressed that Shiu has not been suspended or sacked.

Shiu cried foul at the move, accusing the university of ‘political persecution’.

“It is obvious that this has nothing to do with my work, or my future. This is political cleansing; it’s political persecution”, Shiu said."

Police Humiliated Elected District Councillors; Carrie Lam denies police brutality is perpetuating institutional violence

Riot police blatantly violated the Police General Orders again on January 17 in Tsuen Wan,

Three riot police chased a young man on a flyover and subdued him for stop and search.

Adrian Lau Cheuk-yiu, Tsuen Wan District Councillor, came to the scene and demanded a discussion with the commander on-site. The councilor’s request was bluffed and dismissed, just as the officers verbally abused the councilor by calling him “a retard”.

Other officers pulled their mobile phones out to take photos of the onlookers while hurling more insults like “shut up and be gone”. Eventually, the police pointed pepper-spray at onlookers who were not even provoking.

A rally against growing censorship and White Terror in schools was held in the evening of January 17 at Tai Po Waterfront Park.

The participants, of which many are students in uniform, stood up for a minute of silence to commemorate the deceased of the pro-democracy movement.

Musician #RonoFok Encourages Hongkongers to Fight On After Being Arrested over National Security Probe

Hong Kong musician Rono Fok wrote his reflection on facebook on January 18, 2021, after he was arrested and detained by the Hong Kong police for national security violation on January 14:

"I was detained by the National Security police for more than 40 hours. During which, I was once handcuffed to a chain around my waist when being escorted from the Chai Wan police station to the North Point police station. I have also subjected to dozens times of body search. One time I had to strip all my clothes from my upper body.

Around 6am on January 14, 2021, six National Security police officers arrested me at my home in Shau Kei Wan. They accused me of aiding 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers to flee to Taiwan.

Except me, all my family members suffered permanent mental disabilities. I am always thankful for their love and care. When the police arrested me and raided my home, no one from my family has shed one drop of tear, until the moment when the police dragged me away to the lift lobby.

My mother, who is immobile and her right hand disabled, followed closely behind just to have one last look at me. She growled and asked, “What is Hong Kong becoming of?”

I was tranported between the Chai Wan and the North Point police stations, where I interrogated for 3 times under recordings. The National security officers asked me around 300 to 400 questions.

Although meals and drinks were provided, I suffered from hallucination and very mild incontinence when detained in the North Point police station.
It was a cold evening when the temperature dropped below 10 degrees celsius.

When I was escorted from North Point Police Station to Chai Wan, we drove by King’s Road. I recalled the time I went to the nursery, primary school, secondary school and university. I miss my friends and schoolmates. I used to hang out at the park and the ball courts, grab lunch with my schoolmates and play video games in internet café after school.

Perhaps, I will be charged and I will sit for court hearing or even face jail, but I will never give up music and art. I will keep on learning to become your favourite artist.

In case of imprisonment, I will write about my music and stories. My mother is not eloquent, but I hope to share her words to all of you, 'Hongkongers, fight on!'”

Daring Chief Editor in #CitizenNews Welcomes Journalists who Left #CableNews on #MassResignation: “We Have Nothing to Lose”

On December 1, 2020, Cable News in Hong Kong announced a major layoff plan after a series of personnel change in the management. The move has triggered a resignation en masse in the station’s newsroom, including 11 journalists and editors of the #ChinaNews team, as a sign of protest.

On January 18, 2021, the 11 of them announced joining of an online news platform, #CitizenNews, and continue their work on China News.

Former Assignment Editor of Cable News, Wong Lai-ping, expressed that it was a spontaneous action in last December when they resigned together in response to the station’s arbitrary layoff plan.

“We have never thought about coming together again. We even doubted whether we should continue working in the media industry.” However, many encouraged them to carry on their journalistic profession and continue to work as a team.

“So we talked among ourselves and agreed to work together with a focus on China News as we always do.”

The Chief Editor of Citizen News, Li Yue-wah said that the collaboration is “unplanned” and the consensus was reached after discussions following the mass resignation in last December.

She stressed that “This is worth trying as we have nothing to lose.” She called it an act “to smash the cooking pots and sink the boats.”

Li also revealed that since its launch 4 years ago, Citizen News has yet to balance its book. They initially set a target at 4,000 subscribers, for each paying a monthly fee of HK$100. “We are still falling short of this target,” Li sighed.

Adding 11 members of the former China News team from Cable News will double the current workforce of Citizen News. In addition, the news platform is planning to move to a bigger office with live-broadcast facilities. “This is going to double our expenses.” Li added.

She further explained that the platform is not going to pend on crowdfunding, which impact is believed to be short-lived. Instead, it is keen on expanding its subscription base to facilitate long-term development.

Wuhan medics undercover: 'We were told to lie about Covid-19 outbreak'

//Chinese medics have been filmed undercover for the first time admitting they realised coronavirus could be transmitted between humans but were told by the government to keep quiet.

Senior medics in Wuhan who witnessed some of the first cases of the virus were secretly filmed by a citizen journalist for an ITV documentary.

The medics said they were in no doubt how dangerous the virus was and that they were aware of deaths as early as the end of December 2019.

One said: "Actually, at the end of December or beginning of January, the relative of someone I know died of this virus.

"Many of those living with him were also infected, including people I know."

Another said: "We all felt there shouldn’t be any doubt about human to human transmission."//

Thousands of Hongkongers will be unable to cash in their pensions after moving to the UK

Around half a million people from Hong Kong are expected to move to the UK in the next year, and just over one million across five years, according to Whitehall’s highest estimates, but some experts believe this could end up being even greater.

Hong Kong’s political crisis has escalated since the Government’s estimations were first published in October. In November, four opposition lawmakers were ousted from the Legislative Council – its parliament equivalent – prompting the remaining 15 in the pro-democracy camp to quit.

In December, a Chinese court jailed 10 pro-democracy activists for up to three years, for trying to flee Hong Kong – where they faced charges – to Taiwan via boat in August.

Activist Edward Leung to be Released from Prison After 6-Year Sentence; Family Asks Hongkongers to Consider Personal Safety

Pro-democracy activist and former spokeperson of #HongKongIndigenous #EdwardLeung Tin-kei will be released from jail on January 19, 2022. He is expected to leave #ShekPikPrison on Lantau Island in the morning.

On January 18, 2022, Leung's family announced on his Facebook page that "there is no need to travel a long way to Shek Pik"; they "hope to soon reunite with Edward"; and fellow Hongkongers should "consider their personal safety first." In order to better protect Leung, his family decided to shut down his Facebook page by midnight of January 19, 2022.

Before being jailed, Leung joined Hong Kong Indigenous, a political group founded by #RoyYeung, in 2015. In February 2016, Leung won 66,000 votes in the New Territories East By-election. His campaign slogan was "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times." The government disqualified his candidiacy in the Legislative Election in the same year.

In June 2018, he was convicted of assaulting an officer and rioting in the 2016 #FishballRevolution, and was sentenced to 6 years in jail.

During the 2019 #AntiELAB movement, Leung sent an open letter to #Hongkongers from the prison, telling his fellow citizens "not to be overtaken by hatred; and to stay alert and continue to think during difficult times".

Leung has been relocated to Cat. A in the prison and placed in isolated cell since last year.
