Canada Confirmed Detained Citizens Not Been Trial in China, Despite Confusing Message from China's Spokesperson
Canada said it has confirmed with China that the former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor, who had been detained by China for 2 years, have not brought to trial, contrary to statements made by spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry.
During a media briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said the two men had been "arrested, indicted and tried" by Chinese authority. This was the first time China has publicly claimed to have taken the two to court.
Hua did not provide more information during the briefing. The Canadian Department of Global Affairs issued a statement on Thursday, saying that the Canadian Embassy in Beijing had spoken with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and confirmed that both have not been put on trial. The statement said Chinese officials “confirmed that the confusion was caused by an inaccurate characterisation of the process made by the Chinese MFA spokesperson”

HK Police Targets Good Neighbour North District Church, Demands Full Staff List
On December 7, 2020, the bank accounts of the Good Neighbour North District Church were frozen, one staff and one former executive were arrested.
According to Ka-Tung Lau, a social worker at the Church who has been brought to the police station for investigation, 30 staff members and 400 services for teenagers and homeless people were affected by this police action.
Lau could not comment on the financial status of the Church as he was still seeking legal advice, but he mentioned that the police asked the arrestees to provide a full staff list of the Church.
The staff now were very worried about being arrested, but they were still willing to provide church service as usual even though the Church was unable to pay their salary.

Chinese Media Allegedly Use Hongkongers to convince Chinese Mainlanders to receive China-made COVID-19 Vaccine
Since Nov 29, 2020, multiple media in China have been reporting that “close to 90% of Hongkongers hope to receive COVID-19 vaccine developed by China”.
All these articles described that the number of cases are rising again in Hong Kong for unknown reasons. According to them, on Nov 29, 2020, a group called “COVID-19 Vaccination Concern Group” held a press conference and presented results of a poll that showed 96.9% of Hong Kongers "felt confident in COVID-19 vaccines developed by China", and 88.6% would like a shot.
It was also reported that the said Concern Group was founded by Beijing loyalists such as the self-proclaimed “flag bearer” Lam Wai-man. The poll was purportedly conducted from Nov 25 to 28 through an "online platform". Among the 8,189 participants, 7,820 were "Hong Kong local citizens", and 177 were residents of the Guangdong Province in China who held Hong Kong citizenship.

HK Police Impersonate Social Workers when Visiting Imprisoned Protesters, Former Legislator Says
Former legislator Shiu Ka-chun told reporters that Pun Ho-Chiu, an imprisoned protester, had prison visits from two men who initially claimed themselves “social workers”. When Poon later asked them to clarify their identities, the visitors admitted that they came from the Police Force .
Shiu Ka-chun pointed out that it is illegal for non-registered social workers to use the official title “social worker”. He urged both the Correctional Services and the Police Force to provide an explanation.
Pun Ho-Chiu, 31, nicknamed “The Painter,” took part in a demonstration outside the Wan Chai police headquarters last June, one of dozens of mass protests against the planned extradition bill. In late November, Poon was convicted of property damage and unauthorised assembly, and sentenced to 21 months in jail.

Jimmy Lai charged under national security law as Hong Kong crackdown worsens
On 11 Dec afternoon, Local media reported Jimmy Lai, 73, was charged with foreign collusion offences and endangering national security under the draconian national security law (NSL) imposed by Beijing in June.
Lai was first arrested under the NSL in August, as part of a police sweep on 10 individuals and a raid of the Apple Daily newsroom. He is facing multiple other separate cases, and was last week charged with fraud alongside two Next Digital executives. The trio were accused of breaching land-lease terms by misusing Next Digital’s office space in Tseung Kwan O for other purposes. Lai was denied bail and detained ahead of the next court hearing in April next year.

Former Hong Kong lawmaker urges U.S. to punish China's 'ATM': the banking sector
“There’s a stronger way to respond to China’s repression: Hong Kong financial system, which is one of the ATMs of China right now - if we can do something on this, it will be much more powerful,” a former Hong Kong lawmaker
Sixtus “Baggio” Leung said in Washington, after fleeing to seek asylum in the United States in November 2020.
He hopes to meet with advisers of President-elect Joe Biden to urge him to ramp up pressure on China, which tightened its grip over the former British colony with the imposition of new national security laws in June.
Leung suggested action should be taken to block Chinese banks from using SWIFT, a network used by banks globally to make financial transactions, and also target Hong Kong dollar’s peg to the U.S. currency “to try to force China to back to the negotiation table”.

Former Hong Kong lawmaker urges U.S. to punish China's 'ATM': the banking sector
The United States should target Hong Kong's financial sector with tougher sanctions to deprive China from its 'ATM' and to force Beijing to the negotiating table over its crackdown on the Asian financial hub, a former Hong Kong lawmaker told Reuters.
