Shatin district councillor Li Chi-Wang has been detained for some time by riot police; nearby citizens repeatedly chanted "Release him". However, police only seemed concerned in removing the crowd from the area, at times raising the blue unlawful assembly warning flag towards the restive crowd.

District Councilor Detained Within Police Cordon, Fellow Councilors' Requests for His Release in Vain

Shatin District Councillor Li Chi-wang was held in custody within the cordon. His fellow members of the District Councils Observers asked police officers on-site for the reason of such an action, yet their actions were in vain. They were discontented that Lee was detained when apparently there were no illegal items or equipment on his body.

The two parties began a quarrel, while citizens nearby shouted “Release Li Chi-wang. Release! Release! Release!” in protest.

A policeman holding a gun had a quarrel with Legislative Councillor Ted Hui. The policeman was agitated, shouting and pointing his finger at Hui, who comforted him and asked him to calm down.

According to Hui, the police arrested district councilor Ip Kam-lung, who was trying to separate a civilian and a policeman charging forward. The police violently pinned Ip down with the knee.

In addition to Ip, another district councilor Li Chi-wang was arrested around Canal Road Flyover.

Police Arrests Sha Tin District Councilor Li Chi-wang over the May 24th demonstration on Hong Kong Island

Sha Tin District Councilor Li Chi-wang was arrested at his residence on the morning of Nov 17, 2020.

According to his Facebook page, he was charged with disorder in public places, and he believed that his arrest was related to the demonstration on Hong Kong Island on May 24, 2020

On May 24, netizens launched a rally against Beijing's plan of imposing 'Hong Kong National Security Law' and 'National Anthem Law'. The rally started off at two places: SOGO department store in Causeway Bay and Southorn playground in Wan Chai. The demonstration did not apply for the Letter of No Objection. Rounds of tear gas were fired and water cannon vehicle was deployed to disperse the demonstrators, 193 people were arrested.

Li participated in supervising the police's operation on that day. While police were dispersing the protesters with tear gas under Canal Road Flyover, Li and Central and the Western District Councilor Yip Kam-lung were arrested and were taken onto the police vehicle. They were detained in the police station and refused to be bailed, they were then released after refusing the bail condition set by the police.

On July 1, 2020, netizens called for a march against the implementation of the 'National Security Law'. While riot police were dispersing the citizens in Times Square, seven Sha Tin councilors, including Li, Chiu Chu-pong and Shek William, were arrested on suspicion of participating in an unlawful assembly.
