Hong Kong Authorities Mix Up Test Sample and Let Go Wuhan Pneumonia Patients

//Two people infected with Wuhan pneumonia were allowed to leave a testing centre set up at AsiaWorld-Expo on Friday and make their way back home instead of being taken to a hospital isolation ward, after their test samples were accidentally switched with two others who were free of the virus.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong health official said on March 21 that the number of people testing positive for Wuhan pneumonia in Hong Kong is "quite scary", as the city added another 17 confirmed cases, bringing the total tally to 273 – almost double the figure from a week ago.//

Glitches in Monitoring Wristbands Distributed by the Hong Kong Government

//The Hong Kong government has also distributed 11,000 bracelets since 19 March to passengers arriving Hong Kong from places other than China, Macau and Taiwan.

But many people have complained that they did not receive the verification message needed to activate the smartphone app from the authorities. Some even waited for more than 32 hours. Others said they didn't get a bracelet until they complained.

The Health Secretary, Sophia Chan, blamed the delays with the activation messages on the fact that a large amount of information was hitting the system, after a lot of flights landed around the same time.//

Cleaners Delighted To Receive Extra Surgical Masks Distributed By Union, Representative Laments At Government’s Incompetency

The Cleaning Worker’s Union has recently been distributing surgical masks to frontline cleaning workers in the community. A reporter from Hong Kong In-media joined union representative Leung Tsz-yan in distributing them. Cleaning workers were delighted when they received these extra masks.

Union representative Leung lamented at their reaction and criticized the Hong Kong government’s incompetence in providing them with enough protective equipment. Since the protests last year up until the current epidemic, these cleaners went among the firsts to be affected because of the lack of protective gear.

Coronavirus: Social distancing may need to go on for almost 12 months, UK’s scientific advice says

//The UK could face close to a year of social distancing measures to safeguard the NHS’s ability to cope with coronavirus, according to newly published scientific advice to ministers.

Documents made public today show scientists agreed on Monday that the only realistic prospect of controlling the virus and preventing intensive care wards being overwhelmed would be to start an alternating policy of more and less strict rules on social distancing.

According to a consensus statement agreed by the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, the restrictions will have to last much longer.

It is a panel of experts convened by the Department of Health and Social Care to advise on the UK’s response to a pandemic based on infectious disease modelling and epidemiology.

It was agreed that the addition of both general social distancing and school closures to case isolation, household isolation and social distancing of vulnerable groups would be likely to control the epidemic when kept in place for a long period. [It was] agreed that this strategy should be followed as soon as practical, at least in the first instance.”//

Thousands of Hongkongers will be unable to cash in their pensions after moving to the UK

In retaliation at the UK offering a new visa, China initially announced it would not recognise the BN(O) passport as a travel or ID document from January 31, when the UK opened its doors. Some 3m Hongkongers hold BN(O) status – many with BN(O) passports – and are eligible to move to the UK under the new visa. And earlier this month, Hong Kong’s Mandatory Provident Funds (MPF) Schemes Authority – which is in charge of the city’s compulsory pension scheme – said: “BN(O) passports are no longer recognised as any form of proof of identity in Hong Kong. Thus, scheme members cannot rely on BN(O) passport or its associated visa as evidence in support of an application for early withdrawal of MPF.”

Stephen Harper warns China likely to be increasingly assertive as U.S. takes less dominant international role

OTTAWA – Former prime minister Stephen Harper said the West needs to be prepared for a more robust and aggressive China going forward in a world where the U.S. may not be so dominant on the international stage.

Harper spoke Friday at the Conference of Defence Associations Institute’s annual conference, in a conversation with Richard Fadden, who was Harper’s national security advisor. The conference was held virtually this year, but usually takes place in Ottawa and the National Post is a sponsor of the event.
