14 HK Police Officers Raid Apple Daily Founder Jimmy Lai's Office Again

According to Apple Daily, 14 Hong Kong police officers raided Jimmy Lai's office in a consultant firm he owned in Kwun Tong on Oct 15, 2020.

Lai's aide Mark Simon called the police and requested the search to take place in the presence of Lai's lawyers. The police ignored and took away "evidence" in the absence of Lai's legal representatives.

Simon condemned the police for "trying to make civil disputes into criminal cases and more ominously shut off funds Mr. Lai uses to support Apple Daily".

On the afternoon of the police raid, Lai is attending a court hearing where he is charged with attending unauthorized assembly and others during the June 4th Tiananmen Massacre Vigil in 2020.

“Yellow Raincoat” etched into every Hongkongers hearts

16 months after passing of the Yellow Raincoat man, Marco Leung Ling-kit, who sacrificed himself in a bid to halt the Carrie Lam Administration from pushing forward the Fugitive Offenders Amendment Bill in Hong Kong, defiant Hongkongers erected a yellow raincoat in his remembrance among stalks of white flowers and candles.

Vividly displayed on the raincoat were words of Hongkongers’ disappointment, “Evil police are savage; Carrie Lam destroys Hong Kong”.

Chinese Ambassador Urged Canada Not to Grant Asylum to Hongkongers and Warned of the Threat from “Violent Criminals” to 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong.

Chinese ambassador to Canada, Cong Peiwu, on Thursday (15 October) urged Ottawa to stop granting asylum to pro-democracy activists from Hong Kong and described them as violent criminals. He also warned that accepting these Hongkongers and condoning violent crime could jeopardize the "health and safety" of the 300,000 Canadians living in Hong Kong.

When reporters asked him whether the statement was a threat to Canada, Cong responded, "That is your interpretation.”

Cong also rejected the accusation from the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week that China is practicing "coercive diplomacy.

Canadian Foreign Minister François-Philippe Champagne said that Cong's comments were inappropriate. In a statement, he said, “the reported comments by the Chinese ambassador are completely unacceptable and disturbing.” Champagne had also instructed the Department of Global Affairs to call Cong "with a clear attitude" that Canada will always defend human rights and the rights of Canadians around the world.

US State Department Reportedly Recommends Putting China’s Ant Group on Trade Blacklist

As US-China relations remain tense, sources have indicated to Reuters that the State Department had proposed placing Ant Group on the trade blacklist to the Trump administration ahead of its listing on the US stock market.

A financial technology firm, Ant Group is planning to be listed on stock markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong with an estimated market value of a record-breaking 35 billion US dollars. It is unclear at the moment as to when the US government will add the firm to its Entity List, but it is believed that this is a sign from hardliners in Washington that American investors should refrain from taking part in the firm’s initial public offering.

While the local law makes it difficult for US firms to sell high-tech products to companies on the Entity List, how this latest move actually affects China is still a matter of debate. Reuters noted that while telecom companies like Huawei may suffer from being blacklisted, placing a fintech firm on the list could be more of a gesture.

US appointed Special Coordinator to enforce Tibetan policies Pompeo: China will pay for violations of human rights

The US Department of State has appointed Robert Destro, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), as the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian responded to the appointment on Thursday, claiming the position was created by the US simply as a political stunt. He reiterated China’s stance in its objection and refusal to recognize this appointment.

Zhao Lijian accused the US of interfering with Chinese internal affairs, and undermining the stable development of Tibet. He urged the US to stop using Tibetan issues to meddle in Chinese affairs and emphasised China’s affirming stance in taking every measure to protect its own interest.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo stated on the press conference that Destro will enforce the Tibetan Policy and Support Act, aiming to foster the exchange between China and Dalai-Lama or his representatives; protecting the unique religion, culture and language of Tibet; and ensuring the rights of the people of Tibet are respected. His duties also include leading the US to aid in the humanitarian needs of Tibetan refugees and the economic and environmental sustainability of Tibet.

According to Pompeo, the US will continuously monitor China for its oppression in Tibet, including its false promise of autonomy; deterioration of human rights issues; and restricting Tibetans’ religious freedom and cultural traditions. Destro will join forces with leaders of Tibet, international allies, and specialists to confront the aforementioned issues, while facilitating the Department of State to support Tibetans around the world and their unrelenting work in protecting human rights and religious freedom.

#Quran App Removed in China

//#Apple has taken down one of the world's most popular Quran apps in China, following a request from officials.

Quran Majeed is available across the world on the App Store - and has nearly 150,000 reviews. It is used by millions of Muslims.

The Chinese Communist Party officially recognises Islam as a religion in the country.
However, China has been accused of human rights violations, and even genocide, against the mostly Muslim Uyghur ethnic group in Xinjiang.

Earlier this year the BBC reported that Uyghur imams had been targeted in China's Xinjiang crackdown.

Apple declined to comment, but directed the BBC to its Human Rights Policy, which states: "We're required to comply with local laws, and at times there are complex issues about which we may disagree with governments."

However, it is not clear what rules the app has broken in China.//
