In Protest Against Speech Ban and Suppression of the Truth During Pandemic, a Chinese Performance Artist Advocates for “Shut Up for 720 Hours”

Starting from 1st June 2020, Brother Nut, a Chinese performance artist, began a “Shut Up for 720 Hours” act, protesting against the continued censorship of free speech by the Chinese government during the pandemic. “If I cannot speak the truth, I shall hold my tongue for 30 days straight.”

“An ounce of truth could be weightier than the entire world.” Chinese performance artists Brother Nut felt that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government had censored free speech continuously and prevented people from speaking the truth. He hoped for journalists who were unafraid of speaking the truth to set up a “Truth Adventure Award” and dedicate it to “people in the media who are fearlessly and stubbornly unearthing the truth.”

As such, since 1st June, Brother Nut had "kept his mouth shut" for 30 days consecutively using various ways. These included affixing a seal on his mouth, taping his mouth, clamping his lips with metal clasps, etc, as enactments of “If I am not speaking the truth, I shall hold my tongue for 30 days straight.” At the same time, he hoped that the action could raise CNY$50,000 to $100,000 for the prize of the “Truth Adventure Award”. With his “mouth shut”, he carried on with his daily life and walked around the streets. He also called on people online to support by taking selfies of themselves “with mouths shut” and attempt a challenge of “not speaking for 24 hours”.

At age 39 now, Brother Nut has had some previous works that addressed social issues. In 2015, he once walked around Beijing carrying a vacuum cleaner, collecting smog and dust and turning them into “smog bricks". In 2019, he initiated a torch relay event titled “Good Luck Beijing” and invited over a hundred victims of financial scams to do torch relays in their respective cities. He was detained for ten days by the police as a result.
