Romanesque Underground Reservoir Uncovered in Hong Kong; Citizens Urge the Government to Halt Demolition

When demolishing a service reservoir on Bishop Hill in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, a Romanesque underground reservoir was unexpectedly unveiled. Several citizens stood in front of the bulldozer to stop it from destroying the structure.

In the afternoon, dozens of citizens climbed over the wall to take a closer look at the exquisite site that was never known to the people of Hong Kong. Water pipes with the numbers 1909, believed to indicate its year of manufacture, were sighted.

Sham Shui Po district council chairman Yeung Yuk visited the site with councilors Ho Kai-ming and Lee Hon-ting; they all expressed their awe afterwards. They said that they have written to the Antiquities Advisory Board to demand that it be listed as a heritage site, hoping to stop the construction work from destroying it.

On December 29, the government concluded that the century-old underground reservoir in Sham Shui Po that was to be demolished should instead be preserved.
