Where are the missing 7 million people? 4/4

China Telecom - Mobile Users
Jan 2020: +430,000
Feb 2020: -5,600,000
https://www.chinatelecom-h.com/sc/ir/kpi.php

To sum up, all three major telecom service providers record a huge decrease in the number their mobile customers.
= =-862000-7254000-1186000+430000-5600000
=-14472000
(excluding China Unicom Feb 2020’s data)
alone in February, the decrease is -12854000

So some may argue that this is just due to the collapse of businesses, and therefore fewer mobile contracts needed, or people becoming too poor to have a mobile network, etc. Well if you imagine that 14mio people needed to cut the mobile lines, the situation is pretty bad too.

Number of Users of China’s Three Major Telecom Drops Drastically
Analysis: Sim Card Users Drop Under the Epidemic

(20 Mar) China’s three major telecom companies announced that the number of mobile users has decreased by about 14.402 million since the beginning of the year. The data plunge caused netizens to wonder whether it reflects that the actual number of deaths in China due to COVID-19 is much higher than the official figures. A netizen pointed out that “a dead person can’t pay the monthly fee”, and some thought it might be due to the shutdowns or layoffs, which caused the termination of monthly plans.

Every individual can apply for a maximum of 5 phone numbers in China. Under the coronavirus pandemic, China has completely shut down at the start of the year. Workers may have stopped topping up their sim cards during this time, which caused a decrease in users in the first two months of the year. However, the actual situation can not be confirmed.

Fred Wong, CFA founder and chief investment officer of eFusion, believes that many people own more than one sim card nowadays. The coronavirus pandemic would have affected the total number of clients, but the impact on monthly plans is considerably smaller compared to prepaid sim cards, which have a larger drop in number. The pandemic seems to be under control in China at the moment, it is believed that the total number of China Mobile users will bounce back to normal levels.
