Global Support For Hong Kong [5/5]

Sept 16
Kim Eui-Sung arrived at the Prince of Wales Hospital today to interview medical professionals. He said that there had never been rallies in Korean hospitals, showing how much anger towards violence Hongkongers must have to hold such rallies. He said that he had the experience of inhaling tear gas in Korea, and luckily the situation of the rally he attended yesterday was not too dangerous. But he also saw on TV that violence had happened after he had left the scene and was heartbroken. He said that he had interviewed some protesters the day before. He explained that he felt complicated because even though he felt that protesters had been both mentally and physically exhausted, they had kept on fighting.

Kim said that people in Korea did not quite understand Hong Kong’s situation. Most Koreans thought that Hongkongers have won already because the Chief Executive had already conceded to one of the five demands. But he understood that there were still a lot of unresolved problems and he hoped to show the real situation of Hong Kong to people in Korea.

While he was being interviewed in Korean, he switched to English to appeal to the Hong Kong government to stop police violence. “Please, Please stop the police violence. It's so bad, don't do it anymore, stop it.” He said. He also said “you are not alone” to Hongkongers and said the world would show their concern and support to Hong Kong.

Korean protesters: Covering up my face is not illegal! I'm doing it to protect myself.

A few years ago, when Korean former President Park Geun-hye was still in power, she demonized the protesters for wearing masks and compared them to ISIS terrorists.

Her claim led to a great social repercussion. Civilians criticized Park’s publicly, besides from not respecting the freedom of wearing masks, they also reprimanded her for despicably demonized Korean as “terrorists”, and not support the people of Korea.

A local Korean, Choe Yu-na who lost her family member in the "sinking of MV Sewol", wrote an open letter titled “we are not terrorists” on Facebook, after former President Park gave a speech that the general public described as irresponsible
.
In her letter, Choe pointed out that she had two reasons to wear mask in public. First was to protect her portrait rights, avoid illegal evidence gather by the police. Second was to avoid breathing in the pepper spray that the police used on her and other protesters directly, reduce the likelihood of coughing and nausea caused by the spray.

Lastly, Choe uploaded a selfie of her with a mask on Facebook, criticized the former president Park and her lack of support.

A year later, Park Geun-hye who doesn't respected freedom or acknowledged the disapproval of the public, stepped down from her position as a president after the impeachment due to losing public support.

Korean Media (KBS) Documentary Investigates Hong Kong “Suicides,” and Anonymously Interviews Police

Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN2ffGtP9hA

Korean network KBS released a documentary programme investigating the Hong Kong movement. They have managed to interview some HKPF police officers anonymously. Starting from 721 Yuen Long incident, the interviewee said that the “hour with no police” was ordered by higher-ups, “who believed that the people did not care for the police, so they wanted to create a situation where the police needed to intervene but wouldn’t.” Regarding the sexual cases, the interviewee revealed that, “the actual number of incidents is quite larger” than the two currently being investigated.

The Security Bureau has revealed that from June to September, the police has received 256 cases of suicides; the number of bodies found, and those who died on their way to hospital and in hospital totaled at 2,537. Over 122 days, 2928 hours and 2,793 bodies, a body has been found dead in Hong Kong every 0.95 hours.

Once a dead body has been found, Hong Kong citizens have been rushing to collect evidence and find witnesses. Over in Tai O, for example, KBS tried to make it to the scene, but was blocked by police. A villager note, “No one just dies for no reason, and then [the police] just acts as if nothing happened.”

China Is Choking Civil Society at the United Nations

The Jeju Olle Foundation has a straightforward and simple mission. The South Korean nongovernmental organization (NGO) seeks to maintain long-distance walking trails on the country’s Jeju Island. But the organization had drawn the ire of a Chinese diplomat. At a U.N. meeting in May, the Chinese official claimed the foundation had failed to “use the correct terminology for Taiwan Province on its website.” This offense spurred Beijing’s U.N. delegation to question the South Korean outfit’s application for U.N. consultative status—a vital civil society advocacy mechanism that, among other things, permits NGOs to participate in U.N. proceedings—during the May 21 session of the U.N. Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) Committee on Nongovernmental Organizations.
