2 million + 1 People March for Hong Kong's Freedom and Rights on June 16

Six months ago, tens of thousands of protesters carry posters and banners to oppose the government's plan to pass the extradition bill, which would allow extradition to China.

Although the bill was finally withdrawn in early September, disappearance cases continue to take place where Hong Kong residents were allegedly abducted by Chinese authorities. Proven cases include ex-staff of the British Consulate-general Simon Cheng who was detained and tortured in China. On December 14, a man was also reported missing after crossing the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge.

[Editor's note: English is one of the two official languages in Hong Kong]

A foreign female report did not understand the police's request since she doesn't understand Cantonese. The police officer yelled at her, "No English", then in Cantonese "We speak Cantonese here, if you don't understand it, ask your fellow reporters to translate it to you".

Cleaners Without Protective Gears forced to Expose to Residues for Half a Year

Five hours after the police's dispersing operation, cleaners from Food and Environmental Hygiene Department arrived at the junction of Argyle Street and Nathan Road at 6:30am to clean the scene, where canisters of tear gas were left behind.

Reporters found that cleaners were equipped differently, although they were all working in the "hardest hit area of tear gas" .

Most cleaners working at the intersection only wore ordinary surgical masks and black rubber gloves; only two of them wore N95 masks, eye masks, aprons and headgear.

Xi Jinping Recognises Carrie Lam’s Ability in Adhering to the Bottom Line of the “One Country, Two Systems” Principle with Due Diligence

In Beijing, Secretary General of the Communist Pary and President Xi Jinping met with Chief Executive Carrie Lam in Zhongnanhai in the afternoon.  Xi said that this year has been the most difficult and complicated year for Hong Kong since its return to the motherland.  Facing various difficulties and pressures, Lam was able to adhere to the bottom line of the “one country, two systems” principle, govern by the law, perform her duties with due diligence, and accomplish many arduous tasks.

Xi said that Lam has been leading the special administrative region’s government to actively respond to social concerns, adopting a series of policies and measures to assist enterprises, alleviating the plight of the people, as well as earnestly studying and solving the deep-rooted social conflicts.  Her demonstration of courage and accountability during this critical period is positively recognised by the central government.

Xi also said that he had already expressed the central government's position and attitude towards the situation in Hong Kong when he spoke in Brazil on 14th November at the 11th Annual BRICS Summit.  He spoke of "Three Unwavering Determinations", including safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development of state interest, implementing the policy of “one country, two systems”, and objecting any external forces from interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs.  The central government will continue to firmly support Lam in leading Hong Kong SAR government to govern by the law and firmly support the Hong Kong police in their strict enforcement of the law.  He hoped that people from all walks of life would unite and work together to steer Hong Kong's development back on track.

Lam said that she was very grateful to President Xi for his concern and his guidance on the situation in Hong Kong over the past six months, as well as his trust and support for the SAR Government and for her as the Chief Executive of Hong Kong in handling such a crisis.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen co-produced videos with the local Youtuber "Potter King" which hit over 2.6 million view in 2 days.  However, "Potter King" posted on his Facebook on December 16 that he was asked by his Chinese partners to remove the word "President" in these videos. His team refused to comply and they found out later that the password to their Weibo account was changed without permission.  Potter King requested to terminate the contract and said, "If we can't call the leader of our country the President, then there is no point making such money."
