Tang Ping Keung Inspects at the Frontline, Gets a Mouthful from the Crowd

01:10 | #Mongkok
Half an hour after the police fired the first tear gas in the year 2020, Chris Tang Ping-keung, Commissioner of Hong Kong Police Force, made his second inspection at the frontline since his last one on Christmas Eve. Accompanied by two plainclothes policemen and several riot police, Tang arrived at the intersection of Nathan Road and Dundas Street for inspection.

In the process, Tang was surrounded by more than a hundred riot police. They barred the reporters from approaching, and once raised the black flag and the orange flag. A policeman kept his pepper spray pointed at reporters and passersby as warning, and even used the spray on people at the scene. Some citizens conveyed their dissatisfaction to Tang, and shouted:”Is this how a civil servant is? Go eat sh*t!” But Tang gave no comments, and left in a private vehicle after five minutes.

A foreigner was pepper sprayed, and got really agitated. He questioned the policeman, "Did I do anything wrong? Why did you pepper spray me? Your boss is gone! Does your your boss have any clue what you are doing? Betray your gun? You coward!” The policeman in return accused the man of disrupting orders, and “warned” the reporters to stay away from him, or they, in turn, will be sprayed at.

Commissioner of Police Criticised "Headliner" for Content against Police
Host of "Headliner": RTHK is Facing Pressure from "Every Aspect"

Tang Ping-keung, Commissioner of Police, wrote to Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka-Wing in criticism of RTHK’s programme “Headliner”, for its biased content against the professionalism of police. Such an action was deemed exerting pressure on RTHK.

Sam Ng, one of the hosts of “Headliner” said on his YouTube clip that RTHK’s pressure was not only from the police, but from “every aspect“. This strain penetrated all levels, and burdened all staff members.

Ng believed, Tang’s earlier letter to “Headliner” denouncing one of its session, “Panic News”, was only superficial. The more critical one was Tang’s letter to the Communication Authority, in which he questioned why the “Headliner” did not condemned the “rioters” for their violence such as road- blocking and arson. Upon receiving the letter, the Communication Authority would demand an explanation from RTHK.

Working in collusion both inside and outside the council has been the Pro- Beijing camp’s common practice to oppressive freedom of speech, including reducing fundings, constant complaints and opposition, throttling RTHK’s room of survival, and distorting the role of public broadcasting.

Sam Ng believed that as this incident threatened the freedom of speech in Hong Kong, citizens should unite and fight.

Ng said the suppression of RTHK was an indisputable fact, ” This is not a personal issue, but an issue that involves every Hong Kong citizen. This is a matter of Hong Kong’s freedom of speech and press, and a matter of RTHK’s role as a public broadcasting body”. Ng believed the public should look the problem in the face, but they were still “surprisingly calm” at the moment.

Ng pointed out that the public were not hands- tied. They could mobilize their united power to support RTHK. He urged citizens to subscribe RTHK’s YouTube channel, and watch more of its programs and clips. They could also write in compliments to RTHK and the Communication Authority, in order to show that RTHK was not only entitled to criticisms. Ng stressed that now was a critical time of RTHKms survival, “As long as we could make it through, we can find our way out.”

Chris Tang Ping-Keung, Commissioner of Police, voiced his support for the National Security Law today on DAB’s roundtable “Curb thoughts of mutual destruction and Protect our youth: Concerning Boom In Youth Crime .”

Ngan Man-Yu, DAB Kwun Tong District Councilor, noted a surge in juvenile delinquency since last year. Tang attributed such trends to “warmongering political leaders and internet fake news” He specifically mentioned Jimmy Lai, the now-arrested founder of pro-democracy media company Next Media. “Believing arrestees were being sexually abused is ridiculous. Some people maliciously smear the Hong Kong Police’s reputation. I often wonder how good teenagers have come to be such horrifying demons.” He claimed the Hong Kong Police have been regularly reflecting on the law enforcement to reduce crime.

As an ending note, he expressed his support for the National Security Law. “Freedom is not without constraints,” he said, believing the national security law will help achieving such goal.

HK Secretary for Security Warns Against Promoting Secession on
#DoubleTenDay: "We'll Surely Find Evidence to Prove What You Think"

In Hong Kong, the Secretary for Security, Chris Tang Ping-Keung, warned Hong Kong citizens not to "attempt splitting Taiwan from China", or to "encourage or to incite people to take related actions on October 10", also known as the "Double Ten Day", Taiwan's national day.

In a Sing Tao Daily's exclusive interview, Tang, the former police commissioner and currently Security Chief, claimed that such behaviours are "serious crimes", and the authorities will definitely enforce the law.

Tang also asked, "If there is no intention to split a country, why would you celebrate this date [The Double Ten Day]?"

In the past Double Ten Days, supporters of Taiwan had hosted events in Hong Kong, displaying the "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth" flag of the Republic of China. However, the Flag-raising Ceremony at Hung Lau, Tuen Mun was cancelled in 2020 due to the implementation of the national security law.

Lee Kwok-Keung, Director of Labor Research at the Hong Kong and Kowloon Trades Union Council, indicates that the council have been celebrating the Double Ten Day since 1948. It commemorates the #XinhaiRevolution and the establishment of the Republic of China. He believes that the celebrations cannot be simply equated to secession.

Tang emphasizes that the main point is whether there is an intention to split the country. "If you truly want to separate Taiwan from China, we will surely find evidence to prove what you think and what you do."

The Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) government does commemorate the Xinhai Revolution; in fact, on 9 Oct 2011, a commemoration of its 100th anniversary was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Then-General Secretary Hu Jintao, then-Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission Xi Jinping, former General Secretary Jiang Zemin, former Premier Li Peng, and former chief executive who is also a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Tung Chee-Hwa participated in that meeting. A huge photo of #SunYatSen, honored as the founder of modern China both on the mainland and in Taiwan, was on display at the center of the hall.

Nathan Law: I will continue to do what I think [is] good for the city’s freedom

Self-exiled activist #NathanLaw announced that he had been invited by the #US President #JoeBiden to speak at the Summit for Democracy on Human Rights Day. Soon afterwards, Hong Kong’s #SecretaryforSecurity condemned his action, calling it shameful and using ‘#democracy’ as a façade.

In response, Law mocked Tang’s comment on the US Summit for Democracy, saying, “from #China’s standards, it’s already ‘interfering [with] other country’s internal affairs.”

Law stressed that “I am campaigning for a democratic and free Hong Kong. If it’s considered ‘secession’ and ‘subversion’ by #Beijing, it only shows the political #suppression from them.”

He added, “It does not embarrass or stigmatise me. I will continue to do what I think [is] good for the city’s freedom.”
