HSBC Reportedly Stops Posting on Social Media amid Scandals to Avoid Criticism
Having recently been implicated in such scandals as potentially being named in China’s list of unreliable entities, according to state media, and having processed funds associated with a Ponzi scheme, HSBC Holdings (0005) has instructed its employees to stop actively posting on social media platforms other than to respond to customer inquiries to avoid criticisms, says Bloomberg.
Bloomberg quoted an internal memo from Tricia Weener, marketing head of the bank’s global commercial and investment banking section, as saying that in view of the recent news, the bank had decided to stop actively posting on social media other than to address customer inquiries. This was to avoid the negative reactions, she explained. The ban was to last until 11 am UK time, 22 September for the moment.
HSBC has dozens of social media accounts across the globe, providing information on financial services and promoting its products. In June 2020, a photo was uploaded to the bank’s WeChat account showing its vice chairman and CEO Peter Wong Tung-shun signing a petition in support of the Hong Kong national security law at a booth on the streets. The photo has since caused controversy.

World Politicians, Human Rights Groups Reportedly Ask Olympic Committee to Remove Beijing as 2022 Winter Olympics Host
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)―a group of parliamentarians from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and Europe―had formally asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to reconsider whether China should get to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. China’s foreign ministry has yet to respond.
Sir Iain Duncan Smith, member of the British parliament and co-chairman of the IPAC, said, “The free world does have a strong position to say the bullying, the threatening, the internal repression, the border disputes, the arrogant attitude to your neighbours, the breaking of the treaty with Hong Kong―these must have consequences. At the moment the Chinese believe these consequences are no more than just condemnation.”
Earlier, 160 human rights groups wrote to the IOC asking it to remove China as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics in response to its suppression of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, the imprisonment of the Uighur people in Xinjiang, and its other human rights issues.

Exclusive: China sharply expands mass labor program in Tibet
Xi Jinping said China will once again step up efforts against separatism in Tibet, where ethnic Tibetans make up around 90% of the population. Beijing has set quotas for the mass transfer of Tibetan rural laborers within Tibet and other parts of China. Tibet’s regional government website said over half a million people (around 15% of the region’s population) were trained as part of the project in the first seven months of 2020. China is mirroring a pre-existing program in the west Xinjiang here in Tibet.

The repressive ordeal of Australian journalists in China
While China's crackdown on foreign correspondents has been a recent point of contention around the world, the truth is it has been happening for a very long time. Two years after the fact, Matthew Carney - a veteran journalist from Australia - recounts his unnerving experience of how China's bureaucratic machine ventured to suppress his freedom of press and threaten his family.

French study warns of the massive scale of Chinese influence around the world
The 650-page report, entitled "Chinese influence operations - a Machiavelli moment" digs through the layers of secret and not-so-secret institutions, actions and designs used by Beijing to manipulate western opinion.
Written by Paul Cheron, an intelligence expert and Chinese specialist with credentials from Harvard and China's most prestigeous university Qinghua, in partnership with political scientist Jean-Baptiste Jeangène Vilmer, a security specialist, the report is probably the most extensive analysis of China's propaganda machine ever published in French.
The report argues that for a long time China wanted more to be loved than feared, she wanted to seduce, projecting a positive image of herself in the world and so arousing admiration. Recently China has increasingly shown another side.
