Canada begins accepting Hong Kong pro-democracy activists as refugees

A couple from Hong Kong were accepted as “Convention refugees” last month. Both in their early 30's, the man and his wife took to street protests in 2019 amid a series of pro-democracy mass demonstrations in Hong Kong.

Under Canadian Law, a “Convention refugee” refers to the United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and is defined as someone who cannot return to their home “due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, political opinion” or other factors.

Accepting refugees from Hong Kong is an indictment of its justice system. It implies that the concerned persons have no internal flight alternative and cannot reasonably rely upon Hong Kong’s judicial structure for protection.

Canadian defence minister calls out China for "hostage diplomacy"

Harjit Sajjan, Canada's defence minister, described China's continued detention of two Canadians as "hostage diplomacy” on Oct 7 and urged the NATO military alliance to keep tabs on the increasingly assertive Asian giant.

Two Canadians were arrested separately shortly after Canadian authorities in Vancouver detained Meng Wanzhou, who is the chief financial officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei and is facing possible extradition to the U.S.

Sajjan remarked that this type of hostage diplomacy is not what good rules-based-order nations do and it goes against the norm.

Beijing wrestles for control of Hong Kong’s classrooms

Since the Hong Kong government began cracking down on education in the city this year, a climate of fear and suspicion has gripped local secondary schools.

Over the past 18 months, Beijing has tightened its grip over the city’s educational institutions with the passage of a tough national security law in June. The Hong Kong government is investigating hundreds of teachers for allegedly radicalising their pupils.

Apart from targeting teachers, the government has urged publishers to voluntarily rewrite textbooks for liberal studies, a course designed to foster critical thinking among students. Publishers have dropped references to Hong Kong’s observance of “the separation of powers”, and removed photos of its 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella Movement”.

British Foreign Secretary: may Boycott 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic To Raise his Concerns on CCP Suppression to Uyghurs

The Uyghurs human rights matter in Xinjiang, China has attracted international attention. Following the joint statement from 39 countries, including Germany, the US and the UK, calling on China to allow UN observers to investigate in Xinjiang, the British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament that the UK should take actions to call China for direct facing the problem. He also said he would not rule out the possibility of boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics in February 2022.

On Tuesday in the local time, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament discussed the Uyghurs human rights in China. Raab was asked whether he would take a stand on boycotting the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. He answered that he hoped to separate sports and diplomatic politics, but “may come to a point where that might not be possible”. He would collect evidence and co-orporate with the international society, to think about the further actions in the future.

Raab also said in the meeting that the situation with the Uyghurs was worrying as they were being detained, tortured and forcibly sterilized. Their human rights had been severely violated. The UK needed to take action and demanded China to take responsibility. He hoped to corporate with other countries, or even to send a clear opposition message to China through sanctions.

HongKong teacher loses job for asking students “what is freedom of speech?”

A primary school teacher in Hong Kong has been dismissed for allegedly asking pupils questions about freedom of speech and independence from China. Th Education Bureau explained the decision meant to “protect students’ interest and safeguard teachers’ professionalism and public trust in the teacher professional”.

The Bureau also warned that it would be looking out for “black sheep” and claimed they had received 247 allegations of professional misconduct aimed at teachers between July 2019 and August this year.

The Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union called the decision to remove the teacher from their post as “totally unacceptable” and they would help the teacher with their appeal.

A Transnational Poll Showed The Unfavorable Views of China Reached a 10-Year High in Many Countries

The latest poll from the US polling agency Pew Research Center found that citizens of many advanced countries had a record high level of negative perceptions of China and believed that China was handling the pandemic poorly.

People's perception of China became negative gradually in recent years for various reasons. Since the global outbreak of Wuhan Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), relations between many countries and China have deteriorated significantly last year. The Pew Research Center interviewed about 14,700 people by telephone between June 10 and August 3 from 14 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, and Australia. It was found that the perception of China in most of the countries interviewed had dropped significantly.
