Police Disperse Citizens who Wait For New Year Countdown

2213 | Prince Edward
Police made broadcast at Mong Kok Police Station, “Do not take lead in clamoring, and immediately leave Prince Edward Road West and Nathan Road area.”

Meanwhile, police also shone bright lights at the crowd nearby. Bystanders were dissatisfied and shouted back, “There is no curfew in Hong Kong. Can't we stay for counting down? Are you going crazy?”

Civilians also chanted "See you on January 1 at Victoria Park [for protest assembly]", "[Police] Not showing up on 721” and “[Police] Killing people on 831”.

Editor's Note: The 7.21 incident refers to the Triad attack on civilians at Yuen Long West Rail station when no police showed up. 8.31 refers to the tragic incident when several protesters were found missing after brutal police arrest at Prince Edward Station on 31 August 2019.

Police Suddenly Retreat as Religious Ceremony to Bring Peace to the Deceased Starts

December 31 marks not just the New Year's Eve, but also 4 months after the police indiscriminate attack on train passengers at Prince Edward Station on August 31.

Despite the police denial, it is widely believed by the public that civilians had been killed by the police that day and death cases had since then been covered up. This also explains the worry of the public over body discovery cases in the city--the police often claim there is nothing suspicious, even when they were 'disappearance cases' or 'suicide cases' without note.

At 23:03 on December 31, police suddenly retreated from Prince Edward. Many believed it was because the religious ceremony to comfort the victims of police brutality was starting.

Politicans and Religious Leaders from 18 Countries Write To Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam to Express Concern Over Hong Kong

//We have been horrified to see reports of police firing teargas, pepper-spray and rubber bullets at close-range at shoppers, peaceful protesters and innocent by-standers on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and again on Saturday 28 December. We are profoundly disturbed by scenes of children and young people being severely beaten, and of rubber bullets being fired into people’s faces, acts which any ballistics expert would confirm presents a serious risk of injury or death, and which therefore is a serious violation of international standards.//

The highest court in Hong Kong revokes Jimmy Lai's bail release, sending him back in custody immediately

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist and media tycoon #JimmyLai has had his bail revoked on New Year's eve after the government prosecutors succeeded in asking the city’s highest court to send him back to detention.

Lai had been granted bail on Dec. 23 after three weeks in custody on charges of fraud and endangering national security.

The Court of Final Appeal granted an interim order to detain the 73-year-old until the Appeal Committee hearing on February 1 next year.

The judges held that it is “reasonably arguable” that the high court judge Alex Lee’s previous decision to grant bail was erroneous and that his order was invalid. They also ruled that the Appeal Committee has jurisdiction over the bail review.

The hearing on the New Year’s Eve was presided over by Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma, permanent judges Andrew Cheung and Roberto Ribeiro – all of them are handpicked by Chief Executive Carrie Lam to hear national security cases.

Citizens Continue Monthly Tribute in Remembrance of Police Brutality Victims Despite Mounting Oppression

Today is the last day of 2020, which also marks the 16th month of the 8.31 incident where Hong Kong police forced themselves onto a train landed at Prince Edward MTR station and attacked indiscriminately passengers on the train, pepper-sprayed innocent civilians, and stopped medics from aiding those being injured.

Many pro-democracy protesters, on their way home after a day of peaceful rally, had fallen victim to police brutality on August 31 last year. Known as the 8.31 Prince Edward Incident, this is also remembered as one of the most brutal incidents during the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong last year.

Since then, members of the public have voluntarily been going to #PrinceEdward station on the last day of every month, bringing white flowers to pay tribute to the rumoured casualties and the victims of #PoliceBrutality during the pro-democracy movement.

In a bid to silence opposing voices in the city, Hong Kong Police announced that they will arrest citizens going Prince Edward station to lay white flowers in remembrance of this incident, citing COVID-19 and social distancing as excuses.

Although police set up a long cordon line this afternoon as early as 4pm, Granny Wong was sighted near Prince Edward station with white flowers in late evening, holding a light sign that read “#Save12”.

In defiance of stringent police control, some citizens came to show their respect to pro-democracy protesters, bringing a prominent signage that read, “ICAC investigate proactively, arresting the plaintiff Lam Cheuk-ting instead”.

Reuters: Two Nuns in Vatican’s HK-based Quasi-diplomatic Mission Arrested in Mainland China, Top Clergyman in the City Censors Protest from within the Church

A long investigative report published by Reuters on December 31 quotes a source as saying that that two nuns in an informal, Hong Kong-based diplomatic mission from the Vatican had been arrested on a visit to their hometowns in mainland China. The report says they were later placed under house arrest and prohibited from leaving the country. Some senior members of the Holy See consider the incident a sign that China wishes to have the mission closed, and top clergymen in Hong Kong believe Beijing is expanding its control over the diocese and even attempting to influence the selection of the next bishop.

The report also quotes four unnamed informed sources as saying that the current leader of the diocese and the apostolic administrator, Cardinal John Tong Hon, has been suppressing progressive voices in the church, including that coming from the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission. Last October, the diocese, headed by Cardinal Tang, censored a statement from the commission on Sino-Vatican relations, removing a part concerning the missing Bishop James Su Zhimin of mainland China’s underground church.
