Government Spends 10 mil on 2 Redundant Apps
The Hong Kong Government has recently pumped in a large sum of money into developing two cellphone apps.
It costs HKD5 million to develop each app, with 4 million dollars being subsidized by the government. The two apps were developed by the "North Point Neighbour Association” and a health prompting group.
There have been doubts about how useful these apps actually are. Some of the elderly felt that there was no need for an app to be developed to teach them how to exercise. Many of them claimed that they would rather watch and learn it on Youtube.
It has been discovered that these two apps were developed by the same company. Subject matter experts were interviewed about these apps, and they estimated the cost to develop these apps to be 50% of whatever the government spent. In total, 10 million Hong Kong dollars was spent in developing two redundant apps, when it could have cost half the price.

India Bans 59 High-Risk Apps, Incidentally Helping to Boost the Business of Local Apps
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited the northern Indian region of Ladakh on the morning of 3 July, where clashes between the military force of India and China broke out last month. Sources revealed that he met with troops at a local military base and was debriefed by senior military personnel. His visit was accompanied by India’s Defence Minister and Chief of Army Staff.
Additionally, due to the newly discovered safety risks posed by Chinese mobile apps, India has announced a ban on 59 high-risk apps developed and run by Chinese companies. 48 hours after the ban announcement, downloads of Indian short-video application Roposo increased 22 million times on Android devices and exceeded a total of 80 million times by the time of reporting. The number of Roposo downloads on Android devices is expected to exceed 100 million times in the coming days.
According to tech analysts, China has been banning apps developed in other countries to enter the Chinese market so they could block access to information and control public opinion direction and risks. Taking advantage of the international community’s tolerance and laissez-faire attitude, China has successfully penetrated different countries through the development of Chinese apps. These apps have since become weapons in spreading propaganda, stealing information and intervening the internal politics of various countries.

China Blocks Didi From App Stores Days After Mega U.S. IPO
China’s cyberspace regulator ordered app stores to remove Didi Chuxing, dealing a major blow to a ride-hailing giant that just days ago pulled off one of the largest U.S. initial public offerings of the past decade.
The Cyberspace Administration of China announced the ban Sunday, citing serious violations on Didi Global Inc.’s collection and usage of personal information, without elaborating. That unusually swift decision came two days after the regulator said it was starting a cybersecurity review of the company.

Fears over Chinese spying lead to calls for UK ban on DiDi Global ride-hailing app
MPs are calling for a ride-hailing app based in Beijing to be blocked from launching in Britain amid concerns that users’ data will be harvested by Chinese spies.
DiDi Global has obtained its first licences to operate in Salford, Sheffield, Wolverhampton and Manchester. It is expected to seek further licences as it competes for market share with Uber, the American taxi app.
A group of cross-party MPs fear that China’s national security laws could be used to require DiDi to hand over data if asked for it by Beijing. The National Intelligence Law from 2017 requires all Chinese companies to “support, co-operate with and collaborate in national intelligence work”.

A #US Federal Communications commissioner pushes #Apple and #Google to remove #TikTok from their app stores
In a letter to the companies released on Tuesday, Jine 29, 2022, #BrendanCarr, a Republican commissioner, said he believed that “TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data” violated Apple’s and Google’s standards and that TikTok should be taken out of the app stores...
The Biden administration has considered other measures to keep American data away from China but has not publicly pushed TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese owner.
TikTok has maintained that it is taking steps to keep employees in China from gaining access to its data. Shortly before a recent news report revealed it was struggling to do so, it said it was routing all data from its U.S. users through servers controlled by Oracle.//

#Report: Security concerns over compulsory app launched by Hong Kong government
This is part of a report published by #TechOpenFund on July 27, 2022. The investigation was conducted by #7ASecurity and #OTFRedTeamLab in 2022:
//...This exercise involved both a privacy audit and a security audit of the #LeaveHomeSafe #Android and #iOS apps.
The privacy audit could not conclusively prove malicious intent or unauthorized tracking of Hong Kong citizens. However, the security audit demonstrated that these applications have not been professionally audited by any competent security firm before, and that significant flaws exist in the current software security development lifecycle.
This is particularly concerning given that the app was originally introduced more than a year and a half ago, was made mandatory in some fashion for 9 months and recently began requesting real name registration and tracking user’s movements.
While no clear privacy violation could be conclusively proven during the audit at runtime, a number of application artifacts, likely inherited from underlying dependencies or simply security vulnerabilities introduced by mistake, were found during this exercise.//
