Lest We Forget: 8 Months After 831 Attack, Citizens Lay Flowers and Tributes for Casualties

April 30 marks the 8th month since the Aug 31 Prince Edward attacks, when riot police attacked and terrorized passengers at the Prince Edward MTR Station. Despite the pandemic, civilians bravely came out to lay flowers as a tribute to the victims, just right outside of the Prince Edward MTR Station, as they have always been doing over the previous months.

Police moved their cordon lines 2-3 meters farther out than before, and over 40 officers were standing by on scene. Councilors from Yau Tsim Mong District were tending to the flowers and tributes. Plans have been made for them to bring these flowers and tributes to the Sandy Ridge Cemetery tomorrow, where over 200 missing protesters were presumed to be anonymously buried.

A councilor commented that these flowers were not just meant for those who have perished on the night of Aug 31, but they were for all the victims who have laid their lives down for the cause throughout the anti-ELAB movement. This includes people who have suffered from the senseless violence by the police, and all the victims of the injustice that has traumatized this city.

Kwok Wing-hang not reappointed as Competition Commission member

Pro-democracy lawmaker Dennis Kwok Wing-hang of Civic Party was not reappointed as Competition Commission member after his two-year term.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam stressed that the appointment is based on merit. When asked if it was a score-settling, Kwok said that he hoped that these independent departments would not be politicised.

Kwok was recently under attacked by Beijing openly. Many believed that Beijing, by criticizing Kwok, has intervened Hong Kong affairs, which is against the Basic Law and the One Country Two Systems police.

YouTube and Facebook announced that information against WHO recommendations would be removed

#YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki stated that anything that would contradict World Health Organization (#WHO) recommendations would be removed from the platform. She admitted that they aware the company policy would raise authoritative information. YouTube has clear policies that prohibit videos promoting medically unsubstantiated methods to prevent the coronavirus in place of seeking medical treatment, so those violating videos will be removed.

Meanwhile, #Facebook started removing misinformation about the outbreak from its platforms since in January. Recently, they announced that it will start warning users if they have liked, reacted or commented on harmful Covid-19 posts that the company has found to be misinformation and removed.
So, what is the standard of "Misinformation"? Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of integrity, mentioned in a blog post, "These messages will connect people to COVID-19 myths debunked by the WHO for leading to imminent physical harm." In fact, Facebook has made several #coronavirus related adjustments to its platform over the past few months.

Both social platforms are globalized. Netizens can freely share their thoughts and information through different platforms if it is not related to violence, sex and terrorism message. Yet, YouTube and Facebook have now broadened the restrictions to remove "anything that would go against WHO recommendations." In other words, they are censoring the information, by a standard set by the companies. This act seems like how the Chinese Government censor internet, not to mention that recommendations from WHO has been questioned by different parties in this outbreak.

Most netizens are well trained to judge information over the internet these days. It is our right to receive different information from others.

Do social media have the authority to censor information we receive?
