Student activist Joshua Wong partakes in primary of LegCo election to quantify public support for pro-democracy work on international front

On June 19, Joshua Wong Chi-fung announced plans to join the pro-democracy camp’s primaries, seeking the camp’s endorsement for a Kowloon East seat in Legislative Council Election in September. He stressed that he could face punishment over his political stance beyond just being barred from elections once the National Security Law is enacted.

Wong hoped that by winning in the primary will render him voter’s empowerment to continue his fight on the international front. In the face of growing suppression from China, he called for more support from the public to back him up. Wong said, “Surrender without fighting is no option. We persist not because we are exceptionally strong, but we have no other choices.”

District Councilor: LegCo election in September could be the last time Hongkongers could choose desired candidates on free will

On June 19, Jannelle Leung, Kwun Tong District Councilor showed her support for Joshua Wong. She pointed out that the National Security Law will further strip away democracy and freedom that Hong Kong people deserve, affecting all walks of life in Hong Kong, from students and teachers to social workers. She stressed that this primary election could very well be the very last election where Hongkongers can choose desired candidates based on free will.

Former Stand News Journalist: I took off my press pass to become part of the resistance

Ho Kwai-nam, former journalist at Stand News, will run for the pro-democracy camp's primary. She was known for her reportage on July 1, 2019 interviewing the remaining protesters in the Legislative Council and on July 21, 2019 during the Triad attack in Yuen Long (where she was assaulted).

Ho said, "I took off my press pass, in a hope to become part of the resistance. I want to walk with Hongkongers and face our future together. It is like July 1 when the protesters rushed back to the Legislative Council to get their brothers and sisters out."

Concerns over the broad coverage of the National Security Law,
Hong Kong Law Professor: The idea that "national security should overrules everything" will only result in tyranny

A three-day meeting was held by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress in Beijing last week, with details of the National Security Law draft being discussed during the meeting.

According to China state media Xinhua News Agency, the definition and the criminal responsibility of secession, subversion of state power, terrorist activities, collusion with foreign or abroad forces to endanger national security were discussed. Moreover, the wordings in one of the four criminal offences described by the Xinhua Agency has been changed from "foreign or abroad forces to intervene in affairs in HKSAR" to "collusion with foreign or abroad forces to endanger national security"; which some interpreted the amendment as a target to local individuals and organisations.

The Xinhua Agency also indicated that drafting the law itself is an important process that affirms the Committee's hope and need to pass the Law.

In an interview, Johannes Chan, Chair Professor of Law at the University of Hong Kong, said in the details of the draft announced, "collusion with foreign or abroad forces to endanger national security" includes inciting, conspiring, convincing, or even unilaterally planning of criminal activities. With the Chinese government vesting the power of interpretation, Chan worried that the definition of criminal offences can become arbitrary, and might vary from time to time. He also expressed concern that the promise of "one country two systems" and Hongkongers' protection under the Basic Law are no longer valid since the new Law overrides the Basic Law, and charged Hongkongers can be sent to the mainland for trials.

Chan also emphasized that protecting national security does not justify random accusations and sentencing or even executing without going through trials. The idea that "national security should overrules everything" is an misleading concept, and will only result in tyranny.

#Headliner Farewell Its Audience

31-year-old RTHK news satire programme Headliner aired its last episode on 19 June 2020 after attacked by the pro-Beijing camp.

Host Ng Chi-sum, Tsang Chi-ho and Law Kai-sun had a 'farewell' broadcast on social media wearing their famous costumes. In the final part, RTHK staff offered them a bouquet. The hosts waved goodbye to the audience. Tsang joked that it was like the pro-democracy lawmakers waving goodbye in front of the LegCo in 1997. He suggested that they should say, “we will be back” while Law laughed and said, “we will be back…to the canteen!”

Ng and Tsang expected it to be the last episode for Headliner. Tsang felt honoured to be part of this 31-year journey, witnessing the change in media culture in Hong Kong. Ng was also proud to have joined since 2007.

"Headliner is like a tiny stone in a storm,” Ng added, "Headliner has been washed away and the storm is on its way, and now its time for Hong Kong media to get ready for this storm."

The school later stated that it did not support such actions because of political neutrality. It also opposed any statement related to Hong Kong independence. The Education Bureau urged the school to follow up on this issue and submit a report.

Cleaner Gestures "Five Demands Not One Less" After Sentenced to 160 hours of Community Service Orders

A cleaner was charged with obstructing police officers during the police-citizen conflict on 5 August 2019. He was accused of spreading his arms to stop an officer from arresting a teenager who was chanting slogans.

Magistrate Wong Kwok-fai suggested this was a serious offence, but the Community Service Orders is severe as well, with the defendant sentenced to 160 hours of community service.

The defendant’s counsel pointed out that the defendant was willing to cooperate, and as a grass-root, it will be punishing the defendant by his contribution to society without pay.

After being released, the defendant, Ho, thanked the citizens who went to support him. He raised the 5+1 hand gesture to show his support for the pro-democracy "five demands", and encouraged the public to never give up.

Education Bureau: Students should not participate in political activities while wearing school uniform

Students in Hong Kong held a “Sing with you” activity in the shopping mall APM on 19 June, 2020. The Education Bureau urged students to "treasure their time and avoid any dangerous or illegal activities".

It was stated that students "should not participate in school boycotts, slogan chantings and human chain activities". The Bureau pointed out that if students joined these activities while wearing school uniform, it may cause misunderstandings about the political stance of the school. Relevants schools were contacted to follow up such incidents.
